sparkfun eagle library

hey everyone,

does anyone have a link to where i can find the sparkfun eagle library converted to kicad? i know i've seen it on the web before, and downloaded it on another computer, but i can't for the life of me seem to find it again.

if anyone can point me in the right direction, or just has the mq-3/mq-6/gas_sensor part converted to kicad format, that'd be fantastic.

thanks in advance!

Re: Appending board layout

Andy Eskelson

Slightly confused about what you are asking....

If you want to add another layout to the board file, so that you can
place multiple boards onto one PCB, maybe to get a better deal with
production then you can append a brd file to an existing board.

Use pcbnew and the file>Append board menu item.

If you do this remember to move whatever is on the page off to one side,
as the appended board will be placed in the centre of the screen.

Remember that this is just for the board files, it does not change the
schematics at all.

I seem to remember a post explaining how to append things on a sch file,
but I can't remember what the process was. It was something like
creating a hierarchical sheet and saving it, then taking the sch that
has the parts you want to copy on it, copy that to the project you are
working on, then rename it as the hierarchical sheet. when you reopen
the project the hierarchical sheet will have the parts on it that you
want, and the normal block moves and place can be used between sheets.

I'm sure someone will point you at the correct sequence.

This does not import any boards.

Kicad is a one schematic to one board system, not really intended to
have multiple boards generated from one schematic.

Re: copying/moving artwork to a different layer in module editor

Sometimes I would like to know center-to-center spacing, and finding the center of an object takes an extra step (or two). Also, if the distance you care about is non-orthogonal you have to run the Pythagorean theorem yourself.

While functional, I wouldn't consider the existing feature "optimal".

I have found the dx, dy facility in KiCad to be very nice (even maybe optimal).
Press the space bar to mark a reference position anywhere. Then move the cursor and watch the dx, dy display in the lower right.

Update:

Boards came back this week -- mostly good news. Solderability is good (even with a qfn24 part), and functionality is, well, functional.

The only minus is that kicad allowed me to put silkscreen text on my modules that is below the resolution of my vendor's silkscreen technology; so all the silkscreen text on the board is unreadable. I suppose that could be seen as a plus for kicad, since it can do really tiny silkscreen text; but there is no DRC on silkscreens that would catch that (in kicad or any other pcb tool).

In any case, I would certainly use kicad again. However, I would echo the sentiment in another thread that a better feature measurement tool would improve the usability of kicad greatly.

Thanks Yves for your response,

First => I do have the same print layers selected that are the Gerbers were loaded onto.
Second 2 => Page Format is 8.5x11" (usually called 'A' I think).
??????????????????? For Preferences/Options/Display, the only box with display options is "Display Polar Coord" and I have it set to "No Display".
??????????????????????? Setting "Display Polar Coord" to "Display" does not seem to fix the problem.

??????????????????? see my Preferences/Options/Display screen at the following link:??

???????I can try switching to the French version and capture screens if that will help.

Hello Jim,

First => Did you select the layer to print ?

Second => Select also a page format (i.e. A4) in Preferences/Options/Display not to have your pic cut in the upper left corner. You can also move your pic into the page marging (ZOOM OUT before select the entire board).

Not sure that menu sentences are exact (I use the french version).

I am having difficulty figuring this out.
Printing from PcbNew works fine, and the Gerber Viewer "shows" the loaded Gerber files just fine.
Using (2010-12-23 BZR 2684)-stable on WinXP.

The problem may be related to the Plot Origin setting when these Gerber files were generated in PcbNew.
I chose "Auxilary axis" when ploting the Gerber files, and an Auxilary Axis has be set at the upper/left extremity of the PCB limits.

I am getting ready to order boards. Help ! ! !

It is not really necessary to print from these Gerber files, but I am making a paper model to check footprint sizes, etc.

Thanks,

Red == Front (ie Top)
Green == Back (ie Bottom)

You can rename these layers in Design Rules...Layers Setup. The colours are package-dependent; there is no standard across PCB packages that I have encountered. However, you can change the colours in kicad (middle-click the colour button on the Visibles tool bar on the right).

*2)* I generate the gerber files and after in the gerber viewer i

In the Gerbers plot dialog click on [Generate Drill File] (just above the [Quit] button).

Re: busses and hierarchical sheets.

Hello Dan.

Watch out, hierarchical schematics function seems to be broken!
Mmmmh. I have a problem to make this connection for busses. Global
Labels and hierarchical pins seems to be working. But no Bus at a
hierarchical Pin....this leads to no airwires, no connection at the pcb.

I use BZR2754 RC4 for Ubuntu 10.10 at Debian Squeeze.

I got an example sheet from a guy of a german discussion group. At this
shematic, i am able to add wires to a bus, rename them and so on.
The airwires appear at the pcb.
His information is, that he uses (2011-01-25 BZR 2758)-stable

I can open my old hierarchical sheets, but i never used a bus before.

With best regards: Bernd Wiebus alias dl1eic

my first tutorial project and my first questions :)

1) So my first question is about the layers of PCBnew because usually in that kind of software the Top layer is green and the Bottom?layer is red.
I followed the tutorial that i?attached.
Instead of Top and Bottom layer as in the pdf the kicad call it now Front and back and first i?suppose?that Front is for Top and Back for Bottom?but when i start routing it's like the inverse and when i saw in the 3D Viewer it's really look that the Front?is red and Back?is green:
So the Back is for Top = red and Front is for Bottom = green? for me make more sense that Front in the same as Top.

2) I generate the gerber files and after in the gerber viewer i can't find the option the print in the holes in the pads.

thanks :)

Yes!

Reverting from the latest build to whats in the Ubuntu 10.10 distribution
solved hierarchical schematics.
