Interested in Balloons...

From ARRL Newsletter July 20
A HABGab and StratoScience Balloon Launch Is Scheduled for July 22, 2023

HABGab 2023 is a special STEM event for the ham radio community in the New England area and it is in partnership with the New England Weather Balloon Society and the?. It features the launch of a high-altitude balloon equipped with three payloads, including amateur radio transmitters, a video transmitter, and science and engineering projects by students from the StratoScience Lab at??and the?. The StratoScience Lab is a class taught by Max Kendall, W0MXX, and Seth Kendall, KC1PZY. The balloon weighs 2000g and the payload 4000g.

A cross-band UHF/VHF repeater will allow for a 2 - 3-hour one-time event for hams around New England. All amateur radio operators are invited to contact the repeater during the balloon's flight.

The balloon will also be transmitting live video on 1.2 GHz, and live streaming to??from the ground station at New England Sci-Tech.

Using the call sign W1U, the balloon's real-time position will be available at?, and the cross-band repeater frequencies are as follows:

Uplink: 146.55 MHz
Downlink: 446.05 MHz

The call signs for all of the payloads are as follows:

W1U - Main payload (transmitted by repurposed RS-41 radiosonde).
W1U-15 - Main payload (transmitted by custom-built APRS transmitter).
W0MXX-15 - An autorotation device. A small, unpowered helicopter that will separate from the main payload at 81,000 feet and descend to the ground via autorotation. The tracker is a LightAPRS module.
KC1SFR-11 - A glider that will separate from the main payload at 80,000 feet and glide back to the ground. It will also deploy a parachute at roughly 3,000 feet.

Also on board will be a U4B pico tracker that is being evaluated by Eric Johnson, KC1OAV, in preparation for a circumnavigation flight to happen at a later date. This can be tracked separately at?, under the name NESciTech1.

In the event of bad weather July 23, 2023, is the alternate date for the launch.

SOTA (Summits On The Air) Campout and activities next weekend

From Amy AG7GP-

Greetings!

As many know by now, This coming week starts our W7O SOTA campout, officially July 21-24th, but some are coming early wednesday or thursday.? We will have a significant number of operators, 50-60, activating summits all around Diamond Lake and Crater Lake NP. I want to invite any locals to join us at least by air. Many will be on 2m FM since there will be enough of us within the area to make it work. We will mainly be on?146.58, 146.56, 146.54. Last year 2m got a bit crazy and chaotic but it was a lot of fun! This year we have twice as many ops. This is a great opportunity to test out your equipment and see where you can reach from home or even better, try it from a summit or high point to go further. Some of my first 2m fm HT summit to summit contacts were from a Rogue Valley summit (Bald Mt near Wagner) to CLNP rim. Lately some have been having good propagation reaching over 200 miles. I was listening to an op in Tillamook from Mt Ashland last week and think now it may have been simplex. There should be some on ssb too. Keep an eye on sotawatch for spots.?

Hope you can join us! If you need more info feel free to contact me.

Huge thanks to Jeff/KJ7IRV and Terry/KA6DNO for shopping.? Thanks to Chuck/KJ7KWR for reserving the venue.? Terry/KA6DNO will be our chef for the day!? :)

Hope to see you there!

Also, don't forget about the fox hunt that starts at 8am tomorrow morning and runs up until 11:59am!? Can you find both foxes before someone else?? :)

Re: Marie Dunkeson memorial update

Lee Dunkeson, Dennie and Marie's son, says they will be arriving in KF late Thursday evening the 20th, and will have most of Friday the 21st free. He states Dennie would definitely love to get to see any of the local hams if possible on Friday as well.

Hey everyone, Devin KJ7OES,? from the Grants Pass amateur radio club here. We have gotten quite a few requests for a simple to understand and easy presentation showing the easiest way to navigate the FCC website and pay the required fees.?

Greetings Lisa,

I agree that license renewal can be a very frustrating process.? I have helped a few hams to renew their licenses last and this year.? In most cases, I was successful.

Question for you, Lisa: Do you see your FRN linked to your new Username Account under CORES to pay fees??

If you have an existing FRN, you will need to link it to your CORES account. More info can be found at .
In fact, I recommend all license holder to do this before their license renewal time.? This should reduce some annoyances in the future.

A few other practices that helped me in the past are:
1. Do not use the "back" or "forward" button on your browser.? Instead use the "Go Back" or other specified links on the webpage itself to navigate around the system.
2. Clear your cache if the system start getting stupid.
3. Rather than trying to renew using your smart phone, use a browser on a computer instead.

I wish you good luck in the process.?

Re: Renewing Your HAM License

Greetings Lisa,

I won't have access to renew my license until mid-August so I can't advise on the online system.?

You can use any of the 3 paper methods...

1) Download a 605 (), fill it out, sign it, scan it, and email the completed and signed 605 to the VEC (vec@...) and they will process it for you.
2) Hand a completed and signed 605 to an Exam session coordinator (me or Jim) and they will process it for you.
3) Show up at an exam session (next session is the 18th), fill out the 605, hand it to the examiners, and they will process it for you.?

After it is processed by the FCC they will send you an email with a link to make the $35?payment.?

Hi Lisa;

??? ??? ??? Getting it through some peoples thick head that the government is the worst to deal with and not worth it at times. Then there are those, with no common sense, that "eat up" on government procedures and processes. Make more committees. Aren't we having fun? Like it's been said,"I'm from the government and I'm here to help". Run like hell and fast. They've always put strings and stipulations to anything to gain control over it. Some GS-14? or 15 decided they need a promotion and what better way than to create more "make work". That's why our government is so bloated with worthless departments. Mainly, Homeland Security, FEMA? and BLM. Some of the biggest waste and overreach there is. I have to renew next year and not looking forward to it. All I can say is good luck.
