Re: Kenwood TL-922-Need a plate current meter.

Hello Lou,

?

If I’m not mistaken you were active on the Yahoo TL-922 list a few years ago, and we exchanged some messages. I looked for your email address in my Outlook client but couldn't find it. Then I was lucky enough to find this group and just signed up yesterday.

?

I understand the plate current meters are not available new. I’m searching eBay for one, but who knows if one will show up or not. I will contact you about getting a meter.

?

I don’t think a tube suffered, as the RF meter and my external meters still show good output. I am, however, getting minimal readings on the Ig meter. About 15 mA on the 400 mA scale.

Re: Looking for data on an Eimax Y-685A

I have several of these modules, they all use the same tube so no worries there.

The cylindrical metal piece the tube screws into is electrically connected to the anode, but the actual heatsink isn't. It's actually at ground potential when the tube is in position. The brown coloured disk is some kind of insulator that's thermally conductive. Not sure what the material is... I thought it might be beryllium but its not the right colour.

Re: Looking for data on an Eimax Y-685A

The heatsink appears to be 50X the size of the tube.? How much stray C is that heatsink alone going to add to the circuit ??

Whether it's the Y-685A? ?or any other tube, I would suggest obtaining at least 2 x known good tubes before embarking on a project.? ?It's too much effort into the amp, with only one available tube.?
Ditto with YC-156's.... or any other tube.??

At least with the bigger metal triodes, like the 3x3, 3x6 etc, they can still be rebuilt.?

Re: Looking for data on an Eimax Y-685A

Reid, thank you very much for looking that up. The info is greatly appreciated!

Fortunately I still have the intact device that it was in, it was fully functional. The MCL 15222 generator achieves 100 watts... which is curious because the datasheet for the 8906 rates it at only 10 watts plate dissipation and 30 watts output!

I assume the rather large non-standard heatsink has a lot to do with that difference.

I shall do some more research and proceed with caution, thank you.

Re: Looking for data on an Eimax Y-685A

Eimac history shows: 03/73 Y685A is an 8906XAL special, for MCL generator"
the -AL suffix indicated a tube made for the Airlines, they used a lot of planar triodes in the past for short range navigation equipment.
For electrical specs look up 8906.?
the time and energy required to build a 23cm cavity would be wasted if the tube was weak, or if you don't have a source for a spare.
GL with the search.?

Not quite.? ?It's a water cooled tube, not vapour phase cooled.? ?Air cooling is good for 50 watts per sq CM of internal anode area.? ?Vapour phase cooling is good for 135 watts of internal anode area. Water cooling is good for 1000 watts of internal anode area.?

Looking for data on an Eimax Y-685A

Edited

edit: obviously I'm an idiot and didn't realize the typo in the title... Eimac not Eimax... ?

Hi all, wondering if anyone has any data on this tube? Potential candidate for a 23cm amp. This came out of a resonant cavity in a 100watt signal generator (this specific module was good for 400-1000MHz). Can't find any data on it, looks similar to a Y-503 but not quite. Have searched through a bunch of Eimac catalogs and found similar planar triodes but not this one. Would like to have some concrete data. Anyone familiar with this?

Thanks! 73

Power meter manual

This is a really long shot.

I am looking for a user manual and more importantly, a schematic for a "Agikawa APM-1H" automatic SWR and peak reading power meter, 1-8 ~ 60MHz.

One is pictured here.

It looks exactly the same as the Macaw PRM-1, for which I have the manual and schemnatic but the active circuitry inside is completely different.

Searches via Google and BAMA have drawn a blank, so I'm hoping somebody might have owned one in the past and still knows where to find the documentation.

I have changed the 2 ICs and 4 transistors. All the diodes check out fine as well but the fault persists. When switched to "PEP", the meter pins on 200W scale and shows around 400W on the 1000W and 2000W scales, without anything being connected to the device.

I would really appreciated any leads, so I can repair it and pass it on to a friend who is getting back into the hobby after many years away.

Thanks and 73, Alek VK6APK.

Re: Eimac YU-191B

While working at Eimac San Carlos I wasn't involved with the Salt Lake City products but I have product announcements for both sites.
"Oct 1989. The YU-191B was a version of the YU106 a water cooled 3CX3000A7, with a special water jacket for Ehrhorn"

A YU-191B should perform exactly the same as a 3000A7 except needing a flow of water thru the anode cooler to keep it from melting down.?
