Something learned about ADS-B
Yesterday was a great day to fly to Pickens for gas .. Darwin and Steve were there in the RV-10 and we met up for lunch at Ingles when we returned home.? On the way back, I lost my ADS-B display on my iPad, just when crossing the rim of the mountains...of course, Steve and Darwin were inbound at the same time from the east after looking at Steve¡¯s engine instruments one last time and I couldn¡¯t see them. Back to default mode: we talked to one another on the radio as I joined the I-26 arrival for a downwind to 15 at 0A7 and Steve spaced behind me. The message displayed on my iPad was ¡°ADS-B Disconnected¡±. Hmmm Apparently the WiFi link from my UAT to the iPad was all that was affected at that point. The ADS-B was still putting out good information. uAvionix suggested placing the iPad in ¡°airplane¡± mode .. apparently, there is an issue with the iPad operating system that causes the WiFi disconnect when the iPad is not in airplane mode. The news to me was the way airplane mode works: it¡¯s meant to turn off broadcast signals from the iPad (or iPhone) but it does not mean you are blocked from receiving data. When I selected airplane mode I had to then manually select WiFi and Bluetooth to override the system and enable reception. New to me.? uAvionix was great with their support and was back in touch with me only a few minutes after I wrote to them.? Still a little paranoid about my ADS-B, I requested a performance report from FAA (my third such since I got the first good one) and had a ¡°baro alt¡± failure for a few seconds. It was enough to trigger a dreaded red data block. uAvionix requested a detailed report from FAA and sent the attached picture. Looks like I¡¯m still good to go and now I learned a little more about how my installation works.? |

Re: ADSB
My ADSB performance flight came out ok earlier this month but I wanted further validation so I checked again after today¡¯s short flight and I¡¯m glad to report it was a good result. Thank you again for coming up with the clarification of the difference between an ATC clearance and authorized entry into B or C airspace.? Primary point: Don't be of the camp that thinks that ATC controller instructions give you a pass to the ADS-B Out reg 91.225. (There are abnormal situations that allow this like weather...read the policy statement). |

Got and AW yesterday
FAA issued AW and repairman certificate yesterday.? Alex and Mark kept inspector happy with coffee & hot chili.
The inspector did look at a bit of detail, found a backward safety wire on my prop, so plane is a bit better as a result of his efforts, so I am grateful. Other than last week's very last minute cancellation, it was a positive experience overall. Thanks to all for the help in getting this far. Steve |

Re: Insurance
I read the same article and didn¡¯t find anything to comfort me.? Afterward, I talked to Avemco,, still an independent insurance company that underwrites their own policies, and received a quote that was $1k more than Gallagher. The reinsurance market seems to be driving their rate. The underwriter I talked to was sympathetic and a nice guy I talked to 3 years ago ... I could hear sympathy coming through the phone, but the realized that was the recorded menu option tree.? Still on the quest for a fair quote.? Re: Insurance
As I studied the insurance article in more detail, I read that relying on Basic Med in lieu of a 3rd class medical can contribute to much higher premiums.? I have a Basic Med appointment with my physician this morning, but given I have no reason to believe I couldn't pass a 3rd class medical, I may reconsider and go for the 3rd class renewal, at least until the insurance market settles.? Brian P.S. It's particularly galling to read that the 737 Max fiasco a likely contributor to the overall aviation premium increase. Alex, I read in AOPA News this morning a possible explanation for your astronomical hull insurance increase (see?).? Though the article is focused on AOPA's partner, Assured Partners, it asserts rates have increased across aviation.? Just what we need ¨C higher costs for flying. I have Leo¡¯s decals for his airplane .. it¡¯s just Loon flying solo .. no Fairweather Flyers.? - a set is 2 decals facing 2 ways so he can fly into the wind on each side of your airplane. $11/set. The supplier (FastSigns in Asheville) has a minimum charge of $50+tax so nobody is making any side money. The images are on file at FastSigns and can be ordered any time but the minimum applies for each order.
