Re: Contribute your insight/perspective/experience hosting VIRTUAL unconferences?
Hello Julian, I will ask @JudyRees from Rees McCann to get in touch, she has been running Metaphorum, an online unconference for 6 years now. It is an annual event for the Clean Language community, run online by choice, not pandemic forced. Over the years she has learned a lot, I not sure how many people have been doing it repeatedly for so long? In November she used Qiqochat for the first time and it was very good for the format, excellent in fact.? Julian, you are doing a Tool Talk at our Remote Together Community on Feb 9th I believe? See you there maybe? Steve |

Facilitation training resource
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý
Hello everyone,
Thank you to all of you who have shared resources here over the year! This is a delayed response to someone who was looking for options for general facilitation training.
covers many foundational skills, and its main purpose is to introduce, explore, and experience an approach to facilitation that is grounded in racial equity.
We moved the training to Zoom for the first time in November, and we were happy to hear,
¡°You all mastered (as much as anyone can) Zoom training
and I feel like I got as much out of it as I would in person.¡± We do a lot with breakout rooms, including facilitated affinity spaces (usually at least two options for
Black, Indigenous, and people of color, as well as a white learning space), and we use Google slides and Mural - nothing fancy.
We usually open our trainings with a short list of promises we make to participants, and one of our best inspirations was to add,
"We promise technological awkwardness." This goes a long way to humanizing all of us and creating space for imperfection!
If you'd like more info, here is the link for again. Like most of our trainings, this one is offered on a pay-as-you're-able basis. The schedule is three full days on Pacific time. We usually offer it about twice a year, and the next session begins February
11.
We also have in conflict resolution, restorative justice, and racial equity. Another excellent foundational resource is
, a 5-day training that creates a really wonderful learning community. They use Lino for most of their interactive work, and lots of breakout rooms for activities and coached roleplays. That one has a less flexible fee structure
but still offers some work-trade and scholarship slots. The next session begins February 5, and they'll offer it at least once more this year.
Wishing you all well, and feel free to reach out directly if you have questions.

Re: digital facilitation tools - resource to add to
Thanks for this useful living document! I added a few details on tools I use, and added "Wheel of Names" under the open category as it is a fun way to randomise the selection of speakers, responders, feedback from groups. I am using it all the time, as it adds a bit of drama and game play to events.?
all the best, Gillian ? ?

Re: Contribute your insight/perspective/experience hosting VIRTUAL unconferences?
We will be running an unconference this weekend for UX Camp DC using Zoom and Slack. We are down to one ticket left unsold out of 75 as of today. I can have more details after the event. We typically host this event at a location like General Assembly, so it will be interesting to see how it works fully virtual.

Contribute your insight/perspective/experience hosting VIRTUAL unconferences?
Happy New Year, f4c community! Hope everyone's 2021 is off to a great start.?
Would anyone with experience hosting, running, organizing a VIRTUAL unconference be up for sharing and contributing your unique insights to a content piece we're putting together explaining unconferences, why/how they might be more engaging for attendees, and most importantly, how they can be organized virtually?? After reading our first rough draft, I'd like to bring the piece to life more vividly with real-world examples and interesting perspective from folks who've already ran virtual unconferences. I think there's a ton of value for folks who've never experienced an unconference in helping explain to them the benefits of the unconference format.? I'd be happy to to include your name and brand/agency with link to your site in the article as thanks. This piece will be featured in our main email sequence (100k+ contacts), shared on blog and social, etc. Please ping me via email at julian@...?if you're up for it- I can share the draft in advance of you sharing your insights.? Many thanks!? -Julian -- |

Re: Experience with new WebEx Meetings breakout rooms?
Hello Rowan, To get around WebEx's limitation with only 400 participants in your meeting (I heard you mention that you will have 800 participants), you can use QiqoChat to connect WebEx meetings & webinars together in custom combinations. For example, in the main room of your Qiqo event, you can connect a WebEx webinar?(were you planning on using a WebEx webinar for your plenary session?).? With the breakout spaces of your Qiqo event, you can connect?each to a separate WebEx meeting?(and each of these WebEx meetings can also have their own internal breakouts if needed). WebEx, Zoom, MS Teams all feel boxy and structured, and that's good for conferences.? If you want to add some playful spaces to the?conference, you can create a few more breakout spaces on Qiqo (ie you can create multiple networking cafes/lounges/gardens)?and then you can embed tools like SpatialChat, Wonder, and Remo into each of them. Here's a ?which shows Zoom, MS Teams, WebEx, Google Meet, and Jitsi all in different breakout spaces. When people join the video chat, the cost is USD $1/day per person?+ $0.01/minute per person (ie $3.40 per person for 4 hours). Here is the link to our . Re: breakout rooms in teams
Hi Gerardo, Simon,
Some similar experiences - issues seem to often be about whether people have the latest update. I believe there are issues if people join on mobile too - I've not explored the detail of this. What I'd really like to be able to do is find a way of posting links to the breakout rooms in the chat for people who weren't automatically sent there. I don't know if this is something even possible though as I don't know the technical details of how the breakouts work. However, it's largely great to have this additional capability to teams. All best, Tom |

Re: breakout rooms in teams
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Ge I¡¯ve given it a try.?? Less well developed than Zoom (e.g. can you move from one to another without be assigned by host)? My immediate response was it reflects the general difficulty you have with MS Teams around people who join from different Teams (with a capital T) i.e. as external participants from the main group. We also found some rather random problems of people being excluded from the main meeting ¨C and are still working to troubleshoot breakout rooms in Teams. Interesting to find out if others have similar / different experiences¡ Best wishes Simon ? Simon Wilson Director Wilson Sherriff 52 Tor Rise, Matlock DE4 3DL, United Kingdom Tel:? Re: Experience with new WebEx Meetings breakout rooms?
FWIW I know from experience Zoom webbrowser users can now join breakout rooms. I also know that Zoom browser?users have more problems than rich client users. At this?point the limitation is that browser users can't self select which break out room to join, they must be assigned by the host. Cheers Mark |

Re: Experience with new WebEx Meetings breakout rooms?
Hi Rowan, a short note on your Plan B with using Zoom with "join via browser". As far as I know, participants who join a Zoom meeting via a browser can NOT join a break-out room.? Looking forward to what others have to say about WebEx break-outs for large groups! Greetings, Michaela? |

Experience with new WebEx Meetings breakout rooms?
Hi there, I will be hosting an Open Space for about 800 people. They are not allowed to used Zoom on their work computers and have been working with WebEx internally. In the past I have stayed away from Webex, as I have felt it was less flexible, intutive?and harder to create a good participatory atmosphere. I just the latest update and the interface has pretty much copied Zoom in terms of break out groups functionality. They offer 100 breakout rooms and meetings of 400 participants with video. Do any of you have recent experience with WebEx breakouts. Any feedback on how it worked, what to look out for or any red flags. We still have the possibility of using Zoom from Browser or on a private device, but it would be a little less smooth. Any reflections, recommendations and experiences warmly welcome. Thank you. rowan |

Re: Electronic polling for hybrid event
I think these options would work for people connecting to the meeting on their personal devices, as they could simply click on the link, say, in the chat.? It would be trickier for those connecting to the videoconference from the same room but asked to vote on their personal devices. I could create a handful of bit.lys (, etc.) to make it easier to type in the Mentimeter, GForms, or other links, but some participants aren't very adept at typing on a smartphone, and some may have issues getting to shortened urls due to random things installed on their phones.? I could create a landing page with all the links, but I'm not sure participants will feel comfortable navigating to the right link for the right session. I'd ideally give them the exact poll they need at the exact time they need it, one by one, through a simple interface. Mira, I like the Slido QR option... If it can work while people are sitting, socially distanced, and holding their phones up to the projected image... And Slido's event-based subscription might work for us. Other thoughts are very welcome, and thank you! Cheers, Sarah Facilitator, Trainer, Coach, Learner? (Virtual & In-Person)??|?? Re: Electronic polling for hybrid event
Have you investigated ? Facilitators load questions into a session. The system generates a qr code or link that participants use to enter the session on their phones (no login or password required). Participants can follow along with an on-screen session (like Zoom) and answer the poll q's on their phone. There's an integration with Zoom but I don't remember exactly how it works. Their intro webinars are pretty good so you can check it out. Basic accounts are free. More sophisticated paid accounts might include integrations and timing mechanisms.
