Here we are on the banjo end:  Now I am looking for suggestions on how to mount the motor. This end seems friendlier to utilize I just need ideas for mounting the motor. Obviously I could add a pulley to the leadscrew. Mounting the motor on the bench top would work. I'd like to see mounting the motor on that 2" x 4" flat space to the left of the leadscrew. Everything I have pictured kinda hangs out there, not very firm or pretty. I do have some 3x5 angle iron I could trim the 3" down. I¡¯m finishing up one copied digital project (Arduino-controlled lathe motor speed controller) and am nearly ready to wire up on another (wood lathe RELS), and have an extra, cheap Nano copy in hand.
?
I¡¯d like to start collecting the parts needed to add a stepper drive to my small geared dividing head and wondered what motors that would be adequate for the purpose.
?
My dividing head is a home made 40:1 unit with about 3¡± swing. The way I use it it would be easiest to mount a stepper on a kind of banjo, with a belt drive which gives options for more torque at the cost of speed. Motor weight will be an issue in any case.
?
Would a 100oz-in NEMA 17 be enough? It does have a spindle brake.  ?

Actually now that you mention it I remember that is what it's called. My south bend gear box and gear assembly probably has one but I've never had to do anything there since the gear change levers do most everything except metric threads. And for those I use my ELS.

slotted arm that the change wheels are mounted to as the "banjo". It may
be a simple slotted pivoting bar or more but that is the item I suggest
mounting the stepper to.

Basically yes. Replace the gear on the end of your leadscrew (or if you
have one gearbox) with a timing belt pulley. Mount the stepper on the
banjo and drive the screw. On my machine I drive 2:1. 3Nm stepper 3mm
pitch screw.

I am "thinking about building up the bench top. At least 3/4" if not 1-1/2". I do not know how thick/heavy the current bench top is possible 3/4". I grabbed the 72" cabinet from Lowes as a close out sale, they no longer stock the same cabinet. I see other 72" cabinets with 25mm bench tops if so probably one 3/4" mdf layer would do.

With respect to your lathe I'd make 3 mounting posts.? Say about 1" long.? You will put them on the end casting in a rough triangle arrangement.? This is what I did with the Gingery Lathe.? Been like that for 13 years I think.? Pulley's are 1:1 with a 10 TPI ACME lead screw I made on the South Bend.

You have to look at the torque requirements of your system and then decide.? Even pulleys with 1:1 do allow easier mounting but the costs are higher.? ? I milled an adaptor that fit on the lead screw shaft and had a hex head so I could use a torque wrench to see what was required to move the carriage from a stopped state.? Static friction is higher than dynamic.? Once I had that number I figured that the 300 oz-in motor at about 700 RPM would still have enough torque to move the carriage at 300 RPM.? ? Or just clamp something onto the leadscrew with an arm that is 12" long and set it horizontal.? Then add weights at the 12" point until it starts to turn.? That's your minimum torquein 12" x ounces ?required to just move it slowly.? The cutting load I don't know how to calculate. ? But look at the motor curves to determine at what RPM your torque drops to a point where the motor will lock up and then add a 50% safety factor.? Or so. ? John ? ? ? ?

Depends on your leadscrew pitch and the size of your stepper and the
size of the machine.
Which machine are you putting it on?
I would suggest you put the banjo back on the lathe and take a look at
that end.
This gives you a mount area for the stepper and an existing spindle on
which to mount a pulley

stay with 2:1 reduction.I'll still end up with 4x the current speed.

I was wondering about speed reduction from using pulleys.
Would mounting direct to lead screw work? Might take some ugly mounting jig.
