Atlas #2303 variations

Edward Bridges

I have two very different versions of the #2303 New York Central
reefer. Both cars are yellow with a green stripe, white lettering
and silver roof and ends.

The differences are several. Both boxes are labeled differently.
Car 1000's box says N.Y.C. 50FT Mech. Reefer while car 1020 says New
York Cen. 50' Mechan. Reefer.

The cars themselves have variations. (warning, this can be
confusing!) The yellow carbody on car 1000 is a duller yellow than
car 1020. The green stripe on car 1000 is wider than the stripe on
car 1020. The lettering on car 1000 has the lettering to the left
of the door crowded together and lettering on the right spaced for
the ribs while car 1020 has spaced out lettering to the left of the
door (but not spaced for the ribs), lettering to the right is not
spaced at all for the ribs.

I will try to scan both of these cars and post them to the group
once I get the scanner rigged up again.

After reading what Mr. Irwin has on his website about this car, I
found both cars and compared them and found differences and figured
most here would like to know.

Edward and all, as you probably noted on the A1G site, Barry Wingard reported this number variation (but not the painting and lettering variations that Ed described) in his book "The Collector's Guide to N Scale." I hadn't listed the 1020 version on my site, frankly, because I'd never seen one. Since we now have evidence (and yes, I'd appreciate some small sized scans), I have changed the website listing. However, it'll be a while before I can update the photos. (I guess I'd better buy that scanner soon.) Meanwhile, Edward, I've given you a credit on the 2300 page discussing the paint and lettering variations.

Cheers,
George (your list owner)

Yes this is very interesting. I would like to see a scan of the 1020 car
because I have never been able to find one. I only have the version which appears
on George's site. The box for mine, however, has the lettering the same as
for your 1020 car.

Another car that has interesting variations is the #2333 U.P. double door
boxcar.
I have versions A (thin black lettering) and C (thin blue lettering with
additional reporting marks) but haven't been able to locate a version B (thin blue
lettering without additional reporting marks). The A car is the flatter
finish, B car satin. The red stripes in the U.P. shield on the A car are thicker
than on the B car, although that may just be a production variation. Also, the A
car has F 8-61 on the right side for a build? date and the B car has DMI-63.

I also don't have an A version (beigh) of the 2302 Safeway Foods car. Hmm,
might have to start hanging out on eBay again.

That is where I got this odd car. Only paid about $2.50 for it
(MIB!!!) in a cluster of 5 cars ($12.00). I got the 1020 first,
then ended up with 1000 as a single car auction a few days later and
never noticed the difference until looking at George Irwin's site
the other night.
EBay is where I got most of the ones I didn't get when I was a youngster.

My 1000 has missing stirrups on one end of the car while 1020 is
mint condition.
I have bid on a LOT of old Atlas stuff on ebay...and won it lately.
Do you snipe:>)?

Will post scans of both 1000 and 1020 as time permits and will send
george Irwin scans for the site.
Guess I found something worth looking for!
Yup, good to have all variations of a release. Like I said, I have an example
of each release but not necessarily all variations.

Another thing to watch out for is making sure the one you buy is an A1G and
not a later version. The only example I can think of, though, is the vinegar
tank cars. I know Atlas re-released these later and that the Heinz car was
slightly different. On the original, the "flat" part of the car is blue and has
more lettering on it than the later version which has brown and very little
lettering. I can't remember the exact lettering differences but the blue vs. brown
is the tip-off. As far as the other three cars in this group, I don't know if
there were any differences A1G vs. ater.
