Re: cal scale part 222 or 223 exhaust muffler
Those are blowdown mufflers.? They are piped from the front lower corner of the firebox to the top of the boiler.? Mud and sludge collect in the bottom of the firebox legs over time.? There is a valve located there that can be opened by the fireman that blows out the muck along with the steam that is released.? In many cases this blowdown is just exhausted directly out to the side of the track, which can be an obvious hazard to anyone or anything in the immediate path.? Therefore some railroads piped this up to the muffler which helped reduce the velocity of the exhaust and directed up in the air instead.? The Southern Pacific RR used a different style entirely.? Their muffler looked a bit like an inverted flower box.? The pipe from the blowdown vavle bent down 90 degrees into the muffler unit which then directed the exhaust down to the track bed.?

Hi guys,
Question for the group. Calscale/Bowser lists this part for steam locomotives. I've looked at all my sources and the only thing I come up with is a picture on hoseeker of a mantua engine with a Mellor detailing photo. So what does the device do on locomotives and where is it located? Thanks for the help. Allen Wood Chico, Ca. |

Re: Fw: that sinking feeling
I was witness to a similar incident a number of years ago. A diesel loco was restarted after preforming standard maintenance. The minute the diesel engine started up the #3 wheel set started spinning uncontrollably. The loco was quickly shut down for inspection. ?We found that #3 power contactor had welded it's contacts together. This incident happened in less than 5 minutes, but in that time span, the wheel chewed through half of the rail ball . ? ? Steve Shoemaker From: Nathan Rich To: yardbirdtrains@... My club sets up a G gauge Christmas display every year at Freighthouse Square in Tacoma. One of the trains derailed and the locomotive ran around the loop and hit the wreck, and sat there and spun for who knows how many hours. There were eight divots in the rails just like this one from that thing sitting there and revving... Nathan RichOn Mon, Oct 7, 2013 at 7:43 AM, V. Stephen Shoemaker <shoemakerv@...> wrote:

Re: cal scale part 222 or 223 exhaust muffler
If I had to guess, I'd say it's likely an exhaust muffler for either the electro-turbine exhaust or the air pump exhaust. It could also be for the steam powered water injectors used for pumping water from the tender into the boiler.
Those turbines are real screamers. Mike Bauers |
Re: cal scale part 222 or 223 exhaust muffler
?Finding the part on ebay, searching for Cal Scale 222 & 223, it looks similar to the muffler that would sit on top of a belpaire firebox as on an Prr I1 Decapod. As to what it is for, I'm not quite sure. I would make a guess it has to do with some kind of exhaust for the firebox. Some one else more qualified can answer the what it is for question more difintively. ? Mark ---In yardbirdtrains@..., <yardbirdtrains@...> wrote: Hi guys, Question for the group. ? ? ?Here's a link to page 11 of the Bowser parts catalog/ordering site. Right at the top are the four coal bunker pieces for the Lines West tender kit and all are listed as "In Stock."?
??
? ? ?I have no idea, nor did I ask, why these parts, which have not been available for a few years, are suddenly in stock but I am guessing that, even though Bowser is "officially" not producing locomotive kits any longer, they do quietly maintain at least some of their inventory of parts in response to a demand for them. If they can make money by continuing to a produce a few select parts instead of maintaining their entire huge parts inventory, then why not? I remember when Bowser first announced they were ending production, they added a little note saying that loco drivers would probably be the first things to sell out however they've maintained a stock of all drivers (as far as I can tell) since then. As for me, I jumped at the Lines West parts as soon as I saw them not knowing how long their supply would last or whether there'd be any more once this current inventory runs out. ? Jeff

As to wheel slip, I will try to add weight the engines or just deal with the wheel slip. I this point I don't think the locos will be pulling heavy loads. (famous last words!) ?Thanks for the update on the Bowser inventory. The slow boat from China has finally came in!!! I see some of the items I've been looking for are now in stock.
