I was witness to a similar incident a number of years ago. A diesel loco was restarted after preforming standard maintenance. The minute the diesel engine started up the #3 wheel set started spinning uncontrollably. The loco was quickly shut down for inspection. ?We found that #3 power contactor had welded it's contacts together. This incident happened in less than 5 minutes, but in that time span, the wheel chewed through half of the rail ball . ? ?

My club sets up a G gauge Christmas display every year at Freighthouse Square in Tacoma. One of the trains derailed and the locomotive ran around the loop and hit the wreck, and sat there and spun for who knows how many hours. There were eight divots in the rails just like this one from that thing sitting there and revving...
