The Hasmoneans did not know that they were living in the days of Hallel and thanksgiving. For them, they fought in bitter and gray days. The Gemara says that only in a subsequent year that they established Hallel as a Yom Tov of Hallel and thanksgiving - years passed until the true meaning of these days was understood, and until they could designate them as a holiday. Hasmonean everyday life looks completely different. The first military operation mentioned in the Book of Maccabim 1 is the massacre of a thousand Jews, who were murdered in the desert on Saturday by the troopers of Antiochus. After that Mattisyahu and his sons came to grips with the situation, gathered an army and went out to fight the enemy. The battles were neither easy nor short. Every day, bad news was mixed with good news, and the spirit of unity was tarnished by fomenters of division. If our ancestors had given themselves over to despair, doubt and division, G-d forbid the descendants of Antiochus would be the ones celebrating Hanukkah today. |

If you have any stories or anecdotes of your own, don't be shy, I am always on the lookout for new material. It is one of the basic ideas in our faith that we do not celebrate Chagim merely in memory of something that happened many centuries ago. Rather, those same spiritual influences that graced the Yom Tov in those days, recur each year to illuminate the Chag in our own day and bequeath those same influences to us. Chanukah is a time of miracles. The miracles did not just happen in the time of the Chashmonaim. Every year that same pipeline of miracles and salvation is opened, ready to be poured out on a national and individual level. We just need to have bittachon that nothing is beyond the Almighty's reach. These are trying times on many levels. May the Almighty open that fountain of miracles and salvation that is Chanukah 2023 and pour forth its blessings upon our brothers and sisters in Eretz Yisrael. May He bring the hostages home, shield the soldiers from harm, protect Jews living in Eretz Yisrael and beyond, and bring Moshiach to redeem us from this long exile and take us home, amen.
