Radiogram Instructions from Feb GHRC Meeting
2
Hello All, I have placed the documents from last nights Radiogram presentation at the GHRC meeting into the Radiogram Instructions folder in the Files directory of this W7ED groups.io. I hope to get the recorded presentation added to the folder as well. This is a great starting point for learning emergency communications in the ham radio hobby. We are planning some exercises/drills to begin training in the emergency communications field and how to handle the traffic. Look for more information to come. It was a great GHRC meeting. Thank you to all who came out in the cold. Stacy KK7CJV

GHRC February 6, 2025 Meeting
Hope Everyone is Safe and Warm Please find the zoom meeting link below for the meeting this Thursday evening at 1900 at the SAR Building. Eric will be providing the presentation on filling out radiograms along with the handling of traffic. I also was provided some information by the President of our HOA here in Ennis that allows me to install antennas and "he says - Ham Operators are allowed to put up antennas in an HOA". Montana passed a law that allows us to put up antennas especially for emergency use. The group will have a short discussion on this subject also. Take care and look forward to the meeting. 73 Ronnie AI7DK Topic: GHRC Monthly Meeting Time: Feb 6, 2025 07:00 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada) Every month on the First Thu, until Dec 3, 2026, 23 occurrence(s) Please download and import the following iCalendar (.ics) files to your calendar system. Extra deep cycle batteries
2
Neil Thanks.... I think I was at the shop years ago, but I can't remember why. So maybe I was someplace else at 4 Corners. Which shop is it? I will offer the good batteries to our fire department and sheriff, but chances are they won't want them. Since I am the only active ham in Big Sky, I may put the two good ones to work along with my generator in case of wildfire ... we are 96% likely for a fire here and Murphy says our cell towers will burn first. ARRL Club Grant Award
3
Hello All, Not sure this has been said on here so: Gallatin Ham Radio Club was one of the lucky ones!!! Less than 1/3 of the applicants actually received an award. The goals of this grant are to revitalize and expand our club by building bridges into our community. The Club is looking to focus on the Scouting America group initially. Our grant funds will purchase educational books and manuals, parts for building directional antennas, inexpensive radios to be used with antennas for fox hunts, licensing fees(for scouts to take Technichian test free of charge), Scout training for 5 GHRC members, and funds for a club banner and pamphlet information(POTA, SOTA, AMSAT, etc.) We expect this project will bring new life to the Club and enhance the world of Scouts by showing new opportunities. GHRC has hit the ground running! We had a great coffee meeting this Saturday with scout leaders and a scout of the Mountain Valley Scouting District. We have began planning an initial event for a camporee in May. More info to come, please follow along through the /g/W7ED. Gallatin Ham Radio Club is honored to have been awarded this grant and look forward to the many opportunities this will create for us as a club but more importantly the opportunities it will create in our community at large! 73, Stacy KK7CJV

Winter Field Day 2025
2
Good afternoon everyone, I will be participating in Winter Field Day next weekend, and would like to invite anyone who would like to join. The official times are from 12pm, 1/25, to 12pm 1/26. We will be at the Headwaters State Park in the campground (coordinates: 45.918049, -111.501884), and I plan on getting to Headwaters around noon on Friday (1/24). I have a canvas wall tent with a stove and plan on camping out each night. Unfortunately, I just sold off all of my split firewood, so if anyone has some that I could purchase from you, I would be very grateful!! My plan is to try and get contacts on as many bands and modes as possible, so if you have ever been interested in any of those wacky modes, or want to experiment, now's the time! Just as a heads up, there is currently quite a bit of snow in the campground. Depending on what the weather does the rest of this week, be prepared to park at or near the campground gate and walk in a couple hundred yards. I'll bring a cart or a sled. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out, and I hope to see you next weekend! Spencer - KJ7SSS

10 meter operations
5
I thought I should share this with the group. A couple of years ago I switched from an older Kenwood HF to a new Icom 7300 which has many more bells, whistles and functions that I don't understand. I'm not very active and the past couple of months when I turned on the rig I have had trouble with SWR and effective HF operations. I assumed that I had external tuner component corrosion or an antenna problem. I use a G5RW dipole which is a hearty multiband antenna that takes up 103 feet between end mounts and is good for 6 to 80 meters with a good antenna tuner. My "go to" external antenna tuner is an MFJ 948 which allowed me to load all bands on the G5RV with low SWR. When I bought the 7300, I also bought an ADG AT 100 auto tuner for a try. The MFJ 948 manual tuner still significantly outperformed the ADG auto tuner, so the ADG is sitting on a shelf. The last couple of weeks I spent some of time checking my antenna and feedlines so that I could get on 10 meters for your popup net, but the best forward power I could get was 10 watts out. I could get up to 50 watts out on a couple of other bands, but I have a 100-watt radio, and I knew I that had a problem. I went over my G5RV section by section, redid connectors and finally cleaned all the conductors and capacitors in the MFJ tuner. I still had low RF output and high SWR. Finally I started looking at Utube videos about Icom IC 7300's. I have only had the radio a couple of years, don't operate often and am not very familiar with all the quirks, so thank goodness for Utube. After a couple of videos I decided that I had bad final transistors that should be replaced. Apparently the Icom 7300 has a problem with failing finals. Before I ordered 2 new transistors at $40 each or boxed up the radio to send to Icom for service, I thought it prudent to read the manual. Low and behold, it had a brief paragraph instructing users to make sure that the internal antenna tuner (a feature on a 7300) is turned off before using an external antenna tuner. Yup, my internal antenna tuner icon in the upper left corner of the display was "on" (apparently a default setting). According to the manual, If the internal tuner is on and an external antenna tuner is applied, they fight with each other. I turned the internal tuner off, went through all the bands tuning with the MFJ 948 from 75 meters to 6 meters, and have 100 watts forward and SWR's of 1.1/1 on all bands. I had a couple of nice contacts on 10 meters yesterday with good signal reports. Lessons that I learned: -Read the manual first -The more I use a G5RV antenna with a tuner, the better I like it. -Having a local group of younger hams getting excited about ham radio can motivate an old guy to dust the cobwebs off the radio. Thank you! I hope to check in Thursday with 100 watts. Jim WA7MKN CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE: This e-mail message and its attachments are for the sole use of the intended recipients. MSU ham radio net meetings as of January 2025
3
W7YB is still in operation, although on a sporadic basis. Only Mark and I are actively involved at this point, and I was unable to do much with the club or the station last semester. Mark, however, was running a Monday night net on 447.7 repeater. At this point, I'm not sure what we're planning to do (nets, meetings, etc.) this semester -- hopefully Mark and I will have a chance to talk about that and get it figured out before too long. When we do, I will let you know. Best, Caroline KI7AJB

88 Net
Howdy, Troy, AF7HG here. I've been traveling quite a bit and find myself asking for a sub more than I'd like for the 88 net on the second Tuesday of the month. I've really enjoyed doing it for the past ten years or so but I feel it's time to pass the torch. Any takers? I will be unavailable this Tuesday, the 14th of January but can cover until we have a permanent replacement. Best Regards/73, Troy

10 Meter Net
19
Hello All, From coffee discussions, we have decided to conduct an impromptu 10 Meter simplex net this Thursday @ 7:00pm our local time. The intention is to play with 10 meter, learning propagation and ground wave. We did a little day time experiment, where Mickey(KK7NNE), Norm(KD7TQM), Ryan(KG7PWS), Jay(KK7WHW) and myself(KK7CJV) checked to see how well we were able to hear all stations. Most stations in Belgrade were heard a solid 55, with Ryan winning signal strength at a 57. Jay in the center of Bozeman was heard by some but not all out in Belgrade. Jay had a signal of a 44 to my QTH. I also was heard 59 in Michigan as Greg(W8VIJ) gave me the first signal report after asking if the frequency was in use. I explained what we all locally were trying with 10 Meter and he kindly stepped to the side and listened as we conducted our quick experiment. NOW to experiment during no sunlight. So join us while we all play radio and conduct a simple 10 Meter net @ 7:00pm around 28.355 +/-. This is open to all hams--Technicians this means you can play too! So come join us for some local HF fun! 73 Stacy KK7CJV
