Incoming Hurricane Milton 10/8/2024

For those of us using winlink, and learning how to apply it during an emergency, the .io [winlink-programs-group] posted today 10/8/2024 the following conversation.

?

Please postpone regular Winlink Nets and testing during hurricane response!

The WDT is requesting that all non-essential Winlink traffic (weekly nets, testing, etc.) be postponed until after hurricane Milton has moved on and response efforts have turned to recovery. There is still a lot of traffic in the aftermath of Helene, and we expect Milton will add significantly to that. We need to keep the gateways clear for that traffic. Thank you! Scott, NS7C

Would that include Telnet??Mike Gormley WA8VEC?Sebring, FL

No.? ?The idea is to keep the HF spectrum freed up for disaster use.?Tom N5TW

Wasn't sure you were also concerned about the CMS's. Mike Gormley? WA8VEC?Sebring, FL

Re: Repeater Maintenance

The $1200 would actually be $1400 per system. The people I work with on the Bridger site with the Forest Service are indicating to me that it¡¯s unlikely it will never happen. Right now ERA only puts out for 1/2 of the rent on Bridger for use of that site. Because of the way the association up there is Designed, there¡¯s no way to get that site for free. Fortunately 1/2 is not undoable for the association as long as people contribute every year.?

Groups.io has a way to incorporate a wiki into our page (I don't have write access, but it is at the bottom of the page), and I think that would be a great way to store the information for each one of these repeaters. It can be locked down so only members can see the information, and we can continually add to the wiki as things are fixed.

I am willing to spearhead this data collection and organization, as well as help as much as possible in the actual repeater maintenance, but I will need significant help and guidance in gathering the information, as well as some updated permissions in the Groups.io so I can make edits to the wiki. 73 to everyone
This month we will be having a presentation by John Portune - W6NBC.? We have had John give antenna design presentations twice over the last 3 years and each one shows John's innovativeness and outside the box thinking.? John's career was in the technical side of broadcast television, principally for KNBC channel 4 Los Angeles, Ampex Corporation Redwood City CA, Sony Electronics, San Jose, CA as a technical instructor/writer. John retired in 2002 which provides him more time for all his other interests which includes assisting new licensees, local 2M mobile, and 40M mobile as a part of RVing.? He does a log of rag chewing from his home station, preferring regular?nets and he manages a remote HF/VHF base station on Vandenberg AFB.? John also has written several articles?for QST and other ham publications. And of course John's insatiable interest in antenna design.? If you would like to take a peek at his website I think you would find it very interesting especially if you are into home brewing antennas.? His site is .? Once at his site scroll down to the bottom of the page and there is a link that takes you to his presentations and detailed articles.

I was looking as usual at John's website and saw something that I thought might be of interest to most everyone.? It was?" Inflatable Magnetic Loop Antenna for Mountain Toppers, RVers and other Temporary and Portable Operations".? High-efficiency experimental 10-40m fold-up, blow-up magnetic loop light enough to backpack to a mountain top made from a mountain bike inner tube and electrically conductive fabric.

This will be John's presentation that I hope will peak your interest.? Our business meeting starts at 1900 MDT with the presentation starting at 1930.MDT? John's presentation will last between 30 and 45 minutes.? Meeting will be at the SAR Building in Bozeman and hope you can make the meeting but if you can't please find the Zoom Meeting link below that will get you to the meeting.
Take care - be safe

Re: MOBILE/PORTABLE ANTENNA EXPO

Pat(rick) KK7KGP and I (Carol KA7ROL) enjoyed the Antenna?Event enormously since we happen to be studying antennas at this time!
It was a real treat to see James Ericson's (W7EY) Hex in action -- especially with young boys on bikes who threw them down to try to activate (and they did with Amsterdam) with Eric.
It was a real treat to see Mat's (AA7VG) Delta Loop assembled by Sally alongside Matt's Harbor Freight box/case that housed all the accessories.
We took a photo of Eric's and Stacy's Rez coil with a 17' whip (we are not living in an HOA!).
The Off Center Fed Dipole in inverted V was visible, but, sorry!, we are probably gonna buy?that awesome Rex coil!
Recently Carol's 20-year old vehicle was hit by an insured driver. The vehicle is in a repair?shop at this time.
When the vehicle is out-of-repair, doncha think it is ready for a mobile radio?
Pat does!

Re: Portable Battery

...Make sure whatever you get is Lithium IRON Phosphate, not Lithium Ion.

Just to clarify, the term "Lithium ion" is generic and used to describe approximately a dozen different battery chemistries that are based on the use of Lithium metal.? It's important to choose a chemistry that meets the performance and safety parameters for your specific usage.? For instance a large, home battery backup system might use a Lithium¨Cnickel¨Cmanganese¨Ccobalt oxides (NMC) but a small, portable battery would be better served by a Lithium¨Ciron¨Cphosphate battery (LFP) or?Lithium-ion polymer battery (LiPo) chemistry.

Re: Portable Battery

I have the same radio you do. ?I use the Bioenno Power, ,Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery, 12V 20Ah, 240 Watt-hours, P/N BLF-1220A (PVC pack). ?20A max continuous discharge current, 40 Amp max pack discharge current. ?As far as what batteries can be transported on the airlines, go to EACH airline's battery regulations. ?For the most part they are close to the same but each has a bugaboo. ?It's not as restrictive as one would fear. ?That's why so many hams can travel with all their gear AND battery. ?So if you use a particular airline regularly, look up their regulations. ?My battery is big and heavy. ?There are lighter, lower V/Ah batteries available by Bioenno. ?Make sure whatever you get is Lithium IRON Phosphate, not Lithium Ion.

After the Portable Antenna Expo I have been on a autodidactic quest of which battery (power source) would be best, especially for traveling by air. Any and all constructive comments to help me in the journey down this rabbit trail will be appreciated.?

We brought our ultimate GoBox build with a Yaesu 991 and the smaller GoBox with the Yaesu 891 with solar panels charging. We brought the Spiderbeam Off-Center Dipole (40-10 meter) in an inverted V configuration with the homemade drive on antenna holder and the new to us Rez coil with 17¡¯whip and radials (80-10 meter).?
