Re: Need some help getting VARA-FM up and running w/ Digirig
Hi Bob,

For packet, you would want to make sure you select the digirig as the sound device. You *could* build an interface that uses your built-in sound card (my packet node/Winlink gateway runs this way) but you would also need to figure out PTT--probably using a USB to serial adapter. The digirig already has all this built in. There are no PL tones or anything. Both packet and VARA are simplex in our area. Digipeating works by storing a packet and forwarding it to the next station just like APRS. We aren't running any of this on traditional repeaters. I hope that makes sense. 73, Ben KU0HN -------- Original Message --------

开云体育Ben, thanks and I will try W0STV-10 ASAP (might be a few days). From your third paragraph, for AX.25, it sounds like I can use my Digirig, USB-attached device as the “sound-card” interface, there, too, which also makes sense. ?Alternatively, I should be able use the computer’s resident sound-card h/w, correct? ?(I would just need to use a different set of cables, to connect to the radio, since the PC has the typical TRS “stereo” jacks on it, like “Mic,” “Phones,” and “Line-out”—does that sound right?) …My “dumb” question, though, is still: ?For any/all of this, I still must use the proper CTCSS tone, to get the repeaters/nodes to respond, correct?…….(even though this isn’t voice?) -Bob KE0EXE On Nov 10, 2023, at 20:28, Ben Kuhn via groups.io <ku0hn@...> wrote:

开云体育My radio does not have a serial port, so there is no “data” connection from the Digirig to the radio; there is only the 4-wire connection: ?Gnd, audio-in, audio-out, and PTT. The Digirig shows up as “CP2102N USB to UART Bridge Controller” not as “Silicon Labs…” I did decide to try to update the driver for that device, and got “no driver found.” ?So I then looked in the Windows Optional Updates, Driver Updates, and did see one for Silicon Lab’s, so I applied it. ?After I did that, the “CP2102N…” device showed up as “Silicon Labs CP210x … (COM4)”. I then switched VARA-FM “PTT” to use COM4, instead of COM1, RTS (as you said) and lo-and-behold, it did not give the previous error anymore! Now the PTT functionality also seems to work—it is keying the radio, when I hit the Settings->Soundcard->Tune button.? I think I am close now… Thanks for the clues, Ben.? Just a quick correction for those using PAT. Apparently it's been a long time since I've used this feature and the connect string for using digipeaters has changed.? The new format is DIGI/GATEWAY.? For example, the connect string I used to check in was:

W0NE Winlink Net Reminder - Week 7
Hello again, everyone.? It's that time of the week.
This week's exercise will be to send a message--use the standard check-in--using packet Winlink, but rather than connecting directly, connect via a digipeater or using a connect script to go through one or more packet nodes.? This is useful if you are in a location with no local gateway, or if the internet connection is down at your local gateway. A suggested path for those in Winona or La Crosse might be to connect to W9GM-10 via W0NE-7 on 145.030 or KU0HN-10 via W0NE-7 on 145.670. In Rochester, you could connect to W0NE-10 via MNROC2 on 145.670. To use a digipeater in Winlink Express, simple fill in the gateway you want to connect to and put the digipeater's SSID in the box after "Via."? In PAT, you need to type "via" in between the target gateway and the intermediate digipeater.? For example, "KU0HN-10 via W0NE-7." Connect scripts only work in Winlink Express at this time, but they are a bit more powerful.? To connect to W0NE-10 through MNROC2, set the connection type to Script and use the following script: C? MNROC2 CONN
!WAITFOR ?
C W0NE-10

Need some help getting VARA-FM up and running w/ Digirig
Bob - KE0EXE
I had hoped to check-in this week, using the radio, but...
?
...I'm running into problems, with setting-up VARA-FM.
?
I get VU-meter response to the rig's Volume control, after opening-up the Squelch.? Rig is Yaesu FT-2500M, and the custom cable I bought from Digirig seems to be built correctly (I've beeped it out, and compared to documentation found on the Internet, for my specific radio).
?
However, the x-mit functionality does not seem to work (PTT wire in that cable is not being triggered by the Digirig--or, at least, the radio never goes into transmit mode).? I believe the problem is that VARA-FM is not recognizing the COM port (I get a message:? "Unable to open radio serial port COM1.? May be in use by another application.").? I also tried VOX, but that put up a window that was a dead-end and said "Signalink TX Properties", with no enabled functionality/buttons on it.
?
The USB-attach does seem to sort-of work, in that I see a new device come and go, in Windows 10 Device Manager, under "Audio inputs and outputs".? It is called "Digirig (USB PnP Sound Device)"--I might have renamed it from "Generic..." or something like that, early-on, yesterday, when I first plugged-in the USB-C cable from the PC, to the Digirig.
?
...Not sure what to try next, or what to expect, or even how to debug this, further!? "Help!?"

W0NE-7 Packet Node testing -- help needed
I promise this will be my last topic for tonight.
The other evening, W9GM informed me he was having issues with the W0NE-10 Winlink gateway on 145.030.? We did some testing, and discovered that because the new antenna receives so much better the volume coming in to Direwolf was way too loud.? We adjusted it and I think it's performing a little better.? Last night KF0ACN, who has marginal coverage at best, was having difficulty getting in on that frequency as well.? I'm thinking maybe I turned the volume down too much.? We are going to, hopefully, do some on-air troubleshooting this evening to find a happy medium. If you use the 145.030 port, I would appreciate it if you could give it a test and provide any feedback (although not tonight since I'll be working on it.)? I'd like to get this figured out in time for next week's net. 73, Ben - KU0HN |
Net times
I figured I'd start a new topic for this in case there is some discussion...
I have heard from a few people that Thursdays aren't ideal for this net because of work schedules.? I picked Thursday out of thin air, so I'm open to changing it if it could help people participate more easily.? We could change the day, or maybe open the check-in period up to two or three days.? If you have an opinion please let me know. 73, Ben - KU0HN |
W0ne Winlink Net Results - Week 6
We had a pretty good turn-out this week.? I think I heard from everyone in the list, even if a couple of people couldn't check in this week.
We also had quite the DX check-in from NA0SA using Radiomail--no form, but the GPS location did work.? You will have to check the map to see where he checked in from. Here is the map of results:?? Since we have done forms the last couple of weeks, I think next week's activity will be a challenge to use VHF packet (if you can) to connect through an intermediate node, either digipeating or with a connect script.? I'll plan to send out some instructions next week. See you all next week. 73, Ben - KU0HN |

W0NE Winlink Net Results - Week 5
We only had 8 check-ins this week, although significantly more over RF which is good progress.
As promised, here is the map of the results for those that included their location: I learned a bit making the map.? When I sent my own check-in using PAT, some of the messages came in there, and some came in later when I was checking results with Winlink Express.? Winlink Express has a neat export feature I wanted to try out for mapping, but since the first few check-ins were in PAT I had to do some manual data manipulation.? Next time I'll know better. The full roster is below: Ben, KU0HN, Lewiston, Winona, MN, USA, VHF Packet
Eric Van Norman, KF0S, Rochester, MN, Olmsted, Mom USA, Telnet? Will be interesting to see the map.
Ken, W9GM, La Crosse, La Crosse, WI, VARA HF, VA3EMN When more people are onboard or up to speed, try P2P sessions. Otherwise keep up with what you are doing. Glad to have the local net. 73, Ken W9GM
Mark, K0GMK, Rochester, Olmsted, MN, VARA HF, Icom ic-7300, Diamond BB7V Vertical antenna on back patio at 23'
Chris Muller, KD9CZM, La Crosse, WI, USA, Vara FM Still experimenting with VR productivity software and how to create a virtual environment for playing radio Boney Joseph, NA0SA, ROCHESTER, OLMSTED, MN, USA, RadioMail app on iOS, New Ham. Learning. Happy to be here. On vacation currently.

W0NE Winlink Net Reminder - Week 5
It's time, once again, to check in to the weekly Winlink net.
This week let's use the net check-in template again, but I will send a map on Friday with the reported locations. To access the template on Winlink Express, do the following: Click on the Message -> New Message menu item. Click on Select Template and then expand Standard Templates. Double click on either the GENERAL Forms or the MAPPING-GIS FORMS item to open it, then double click on Winlink Check In.txt.? The form will open in your default browser. On PAT, do the following: Click Action -> Compose Click "Template" Click on either the GENERAL Forms or the MAPPING-GIS FORMS item to open it, then double click on Winlink Check In.txt.? The form will open in your default browser. Fill out the form as usual.? In the Send To field, enter W0NE. In the location, enter a description of your location. In the Latitude and Longitude fields, enter your FPS coordinates.? You can find them on Google Maps or other mapping apps if you don't have a GPS handy.? Feel free to fudge them a little if you don't want your QTH on the map. In the comments field, enter the usual check-in data: Name, Callsign, City, County, State, Country, Mode (and Gateway if applicable) In the second line, feel free to make any suggestions for anything you would like to see in future exercise, whether it is something new you want to learn or just a good idea you have seen on other nets. My homework will be to use the GPS data to map all the check-ins and I will send out a link to the map on Friday. 73, Ben - KU0HN |
