Hi All, It's almost time for our weekly Winlink net.? This week we will try a simple exercise. To check in this week, if your client supports it, please try to check in using the "Winlink Check-In" form found under "General Forms." If you haven't used forms before, A nice tutorial for using Winlink Express is here:?? A tutorial for PAT can be found here:?? Since a lot of check-ins are still using Telnet, use the comments field to note any roadblocks to checking in over radio.? I will share these comments with the group after the net and hopefully some of the elmers in the group can offer some help or suggestions. If your client doesn't support forms, feel free to use the standard 1-line check in format we have used the past couple of weeks.? Feel free to leave any comments below the check-in line. New hardware, different OS, and lack of time from when I did this is the past. I do have access to a D700 and also a MFJ TNC connected to an older ICOM mobile I had set up long ago. I typically use PAT which doesn't have this feature.? Here are some of the gateways I use regularly.? Of course success will vary with antennas, solar conditions, time of day, etc... so it's something you just have to get a feel for.

Connect Yaesu FT-2400M to computer
Hi Bob,
To connect your radio to the computer you will need to add one more item to the mix.? You'll need either a TNC or? an external sound card device between the computer and radio.? You will also need the appropriate cables to connect things up.
I currently use a TNC for packet when I'm portable, but at the home station I use an external sound card with my VHF rig.
Two of the more popular sound card devices are the digirig and the SignaLink USB, but there are others.

Both digirig and Tigertronics (SignaLink) offer a variety of cables.? You can of course make up your own.
One benefit to using a sound card over a TNC is that you can run VARA FM.? Of course you will need to have a local RMS Gateway that has VARA FM available.

I second Ken's suggestions, including the preference for a sound card interface to a dedicated TNC (outside of mobile where simplicity is preferred).
I actually prefer the Digirig to the SignaLink for most applications since it can also do CAT for supported rigs and it doesn't use vox which needs a little (1 time to be fair) adjustment. It's also half the price.
I also use quite a few easy-digi boards for some applications. They can get to be a bit more homebrew but in some cases like on a Raspberry Pi or other single board computer it's convenient to use the GPIO pins to drive PTT. On a PC, if you have to buy a USB serial adapter for PTT, and a USB sound card, plus an easy-digi boards you are most of the way to a Digirig in terms of price.

Tomorrow is our weekly Winlink net.
This week let's do a regular check-in either with the check-in form or the normal email body in the following format:
Name, Callsign, City, County, State, Country, Mode (and Gateway if applicable)
If you use the form, you can put that information in the comments section.
Also, feel free to share any projects you are working on--ham related or not--below the check-in information (either in the email body or comments field).
For next week's exercise we will be using the position reporting feature if you want to plan ahead.

Moving/Copying Winlink Express files
FYI, I successfully copied my Winlink Express emails (and configuration) from one computer to another, today, using the following, simple procedure: ?
(And, actually, I even skipped the part about hitting “Finish”—so I did run the program, several times, on the target machine, before I did the file-copying.)
This seemed to work fine, for a one-time transfer, if anyone else needs to do this.
There is also a way to Export existing, downloaded messages, and then Import them into a different instance of W/E (like on another machine), if you are generally wanting to keep two machines “in sync”—I think it would be painful to do this on a regular basis, but once in a while might be okay. ?This way, the configuration parameters would not be overwritten, too, like they are if the whole directory is simply copied (like I did).

Thanks for sharing your experience with this, and it's good to know it can be done with Winlink Express.
One of the headline features of PAT (my client of choice) is that the mailbox is stored in a standard file format that can be automatically synced between machines with a cloud or peer-to-peer syncing service of your choice (like Dropbox).

I’ve decided to try the Digirig. ?I have bought a 1-of-4 switch box for the 8-pin RJ-45-style cables and also the special cable for my Yaesu Ft-2500M—about $50 total. ?So, now I think I only need to order the Digirig unit, itself, to have all the hardware I need. ?In a few weeks, I hope to check-in (via VARA-FM?) on 2m.

W0NE Winlink Net Reminder - Week 5
It's time, once again, to check in to the weekly Winlink net.
This week let's use the net check-in template again, but I will send a map on Friday with the reported locations.
To access the template on Winlink Express, do the following:
Click on the Message -> New Message menu item.
Click on Select Template and then expand Standard Templates.
Double click on either the GENERAL Forms or the MAPPING-GIS FORMS item to open it, then double click on Winlink Check In.txt.?
The form will open in your default browser.
On PAT, do the following:
Click Action -> Compose
Click "Template"
Click on either the GENERAL Forms or the MAPPING-GIS FORMS item to open it, then double click on Winlink Check In.txt.?
The form will open in your default browser.
Fill out the form as usual.? In the Send To field, enter W0NE.
In the location, enter a description of your location.
In the Latitude and Longitude fields, enter your FPS coordinates.? You can find them on Google Maps or other mapping apps if you don't have a GPS handy.? Feel free to fudge them a little if you don't want your QTH on the map.
In the comments field, enter the usual check-in data:
Name, Callsign, City, County, State, Country, Mode (and Gateway if applicable)
In the second line, feel free to make any suggestions for anything you would like to see in future exercise, whether it is something new you want to learn or just a good idea you have seen on other nets.
My homework will be to use the GPS data to map all the check-ins and I will send out a link to the map on Friday.

As promised, here is the map of the results for those that included their location: I learned a bit making the map.? When I sent my own check-in using PAT, some of the messages came in there, and some came in later when I was checking results with Winlink Express.? Winlink Express has a neat export feature I wanted to try out for mapping, but since the first few check-ins were in PAT I had to do some manual data manipulation.? Next time I'll know better. It's time for our weekly check-Since the weather is always a favorite topic for hams to complain about, there is a Winlink form for that!? Since this week's weather has been worthy of complaints, you can use this form for your check-in.
The form is found under Weather Forms -> local weather report.
Feel free to use data from whatever sources are available.? If you have a weather station or other measurement equipment, feel free to use it, otherwise internet forecast data is fine.? If you enter GPS coordinates I will map the data again this week.
In the Notes section, include the regular check-in line: Name, Callsign, City, County, State, Country, Mode (and Gateway if applicable)
If you are mobile or don't have forms, you are still always welcome to check in with the usual data in the body of a message.

W0ne Winlink Net Results - Week 6
We had a pretty good turn-out this week.? I think I heard from everyone in the list, even if a couple of people couldn't check in this week.
We also had quite the DX check-in from NA0SA using Radiomail--no form, but the GPS location did work.? You will have to check the map to see where he checked in from.

Since we have done forms the last couple of weeks, I think next week's activity will be a challenge to use VHF packet (if you can) to connect through an intermediate node, either digipeating or with a connect script.? I'll plan to send out some instructions next week.

I figured I'd start a new topic for this in case there is some discussion...
I have heard from a few people that Thursdays aren't ideal for this net because of work schedules.? I picked Thursday out of thin air, so I'm open to changing it if it could help people participate more easily.? We could change the day, or maybe open the check-in period up to two or three days.? If you have an opinion please let me know.
