W0NE Winlink Net Reminder
Hello Everyone,
Tomorrow is our weekly Winlink net. It's been a little bit since we have done an ICS-213 form, so that can be our activity for the week. If you can't send forms for whatever reason you can always send a plain one-line check-in in the following format: Subject: Winlink Net Check-In
Email Body: Name, Callsign, City, County, State, Country, Mode (and Gateway if applicable) Since we have some newcomers, if you aren't sure how to send a form, just reply to this email and I can send instructions. 73, Ben - KU0HN |

Hi everyone,
Tomorrow is our weekly Winlink net.? Let's keep things simple this week and do a standard check-in.? You can do a simple 1 line message or the check-in form. I have P2P running (connect to KU0HN on 145.670 packet) for anyone who wants to send that way but it is by no means required. 73, Ben - KU0HN? |
Re: W0NE Winlink Net Roster - Week 21
I also have the Kenwood TH-D7A radios, but have not used them since I moved back to NJ from SC. I do remember that aside from the keypad entry, you can also use the knob on top to scroll through the letters and numbers when you are in the mode for entering data. The knob is much faster than trying to go through all of the keyboard pressing on the radio keypad.? Respectfully submitted, |
W0NE Winlink Net Roster - Week 21
Happy Friday everyone,
After attempting this week's exercise on my Kenwood HT, I can say that my fingers got a good exercise as well.? Based on some of the comments I wasn't the only person who struggled a little this week.? Here is the roster: W2ILT, MARTIN, LAUREL SPRINGS, CAMDEN, NJ, VHF Packet W2ILT, MARTIN, LAUREL SPRINGS, CAMDEN, NJ, APRS (via?aprsemail2@...) KD9POL, Rodney, Viola, Richland, WI, Telnet ben ku0hn lewiston mn usa thd7 (via APRSLink)
Ben, KU0HN, Lewiston, MN, USA, APRSDroid??
KD9KGQ, checking in via PinPoint APRS (via aprsemail2@...) Ken, W9GM, La Crosse, La Crosse County, WI, USA, VARA (noted that this was a backup check-in in case the APRS check-in didn't work)
KF9CP, Paul, Farmington, Dakota, MN? (HF VARA)
I believe this is Rodney's first check-in so welcome to the net. I'll share some of my struggles here and anyone who wants to chime in on what did or did not work for them, please do. My first check-in was from my TH-D7 HT.? My goal was to check-in using the native APRS on the HT with no additional hardware.? After figuring out that I had never actually configured APRS on the radio before (it doesn't have built-in GPS so not a priority) I finally got my callsign and path correct.? I discovered that I had to use my base callsign with no SSID in order for Winlink to log me in with APRSLink.? I then immediately suffered a PTSD attack from texting people on cell phones from 20 years ago.? I didn't like it then and it turns out I still hate inputting text with a numeric keypad. My second check-in was using APRSDroid on my phone and a different HT and a Mobilinkd.? I also had an old Motorola commercial HT amp that I re-tuned for 2 meters in line.? I figured I'd test checking in and the amp's data capabilities at the same time.? That turned out to be a dumb idea since the amp is pretty slow with it's turn-around time and my APRS messages failed due to never getting the acks.? After getting a 2 hour ban from APRSLink (oops) I took the amp out of line and was able to check in.? It sure was easier to type on the phone, but with that setup I may as well have just used WoAD. I see everyone else who did APRS check-ins used EMAIL2.? I suspect that didn't have as much back and forth logging in, etc... To give this NCO a break, I think we will do a standard check-in next week. 73, Ben - KU0HN |
W0NE Winlink net reminder - Week 21
Hello everyone,
For this week's net, let's test out APRSlink which uses the APRS network to send and receive short Winlink messages.? Since everyone probably has a different model radio or client, I will have to ask you to get out the manual if you aren't sure how to send an APRS message using your radio or software. The instructions for using APRSlink are on the Winlink site here:??https://winlink.org/APRSLink.? The login process is similar to the clientless activity. For the check-in message, just one line with the standard check-in is sufficient.? Keeping messages short is recommended. If you have more than one radio or client, feel free to send multiple check-ins.? You can note which set-up you are using in the check-in. If you don't have APRS set up, feel free to check in by whatever other means you like. 73, Ben - KU0HN? |
W0NE Winlink Roster - Week 20
Hello Everyone,
We had 7 check-ins this week.? Here is the roster: W2ILT, Martin, Laurel Springs, Camden, NJ, VHF Packet

Ben, KU0HN, Lewiston, Winona, MN, VARA-FM via KU0HN-10
Shawn, KD9KGQ, Holmen, La Crosse County, WI, USA, VARA HF Next week I think we should give try something a little different and check-in using APRS instead of Winlink.? I'll have to think about how to do instructions for that one since everyone's setup will be a little different. 73, Ben - KU0HN |
W0NE Winlink Net Roster - Week 19

W0NE Winlink Net Reminder - Week 19
Hello Everyone,
Since we have done exercises the past couple of weeks, let's just do a simple check-in this week.? Feel free to use the check-in form or a standard message with the format of: Subject: Winlink Net Check-In
Email Body: Name, Callsign, City, County, State, Country, Mode (and Gateway if applicable)

Radio Only Check-in Photos
Ben (KU0HN) suggested I post the following two photos of my Kenwood TM D710A display, the first being the properly addressed message to be sent to a Winlink email address, transmitted out on the APRS frequency of 144.390, and the second photo is the acknowledgement I received back that the message was sent successfully. ? |
W0NE Winlink Net Roster - Week 18
Hi Everyone,
?
We had 10 check-ins this week from 7 participants.? Here is the roster:
?
Shawn, KD9KGQ, Holmen, La Crosse County, WI, USA, VHF Packet, Using EASY TERM
Ken, W9GM, La Crosse, La Crosse, WI, USA, IL2P (40M), via NC8Q-10
Paul, KF9CP, Farmington, Dakota, MN? HF packet via KU0HN-10
W2ILT APRS check-in from NJ via radio only Kenwood D710A, follow up clientless check-in pending.
Ken, W9GM, La Crosse, La Crosse, WI, USA 300bd Packet via N0HI-10 (20 meters)
Ken, W9GM, La Crosse, La Crosse, WI, USA, 300bd Packet to N0MR-3, 1200bd Packet N0LCR-10 via MAPLE
Chris, KD9CZM, Holmen, La Crosse County, WI, USA, Packet via W0NE-10
Ken, W9GM, La Crosse, La Crosse, WI, USA, Packet via KD9KGQ-10
Ben, KU0HN, Lewiston, Winona, MN, USA, Packet via W0NE-10
?
It looks like some fun was had with this one.
?
Somewhat related, this week I finally got VARA-FM added to the KU0HN-10 gateway.? It's on a 4el beam pointed toward Rochester, temporarily on 145.670MHz (Yes, I know, but it's sharing a rig with packet for now).? I'm curious if anyone in Rochester is able to connect to it.? That will determine which radio and antenna it ends up on when I move it to a different frequency, likely shared with a 9k6 packet modem.? I downloaded all the messages for this weeks net using the VARA-FM port so it works for me, hah.
?
For those interested in VARA-FM at W0NE-10, that is going to be much more work as that node is built on some of WB0NIU's custom hardware and an older RPi 3 that doesn't have the CPU power to run the emulation and modem.? I do have access to a duplicate of the hardware up there, so once I am satisfied VARA-FM is stable on Linux/Wine x86 on my node, and I am happy with my startup/watchdog scripts, I can test upgrading the hardware to a Pi 4 and try it on that platform.
?
Next week we will take a break from exercises and do a standard check-in.? I'll send a reminder on Wednesday.
?

W0NE Winlink Reminder - Week 18
Hello Everyone,
?
This week's exercise will be to check in to the net without using a Winlink client.? For anyone who is used to sending messages with a packet BBS, this will seem familiar.? If this is new to you, feel free to ask the group for help.? Once you are set up to do this exercise, you can use similar techniques to explore the VHF packet networks in the area, and the nationwide packet networks on HF.
?
This activity may be useful in the event you find yourself needing to send or receive Winlink mail, but you have limited equipment available.? To do this exercise you will need a terminal of some kind that is compatible with whatever modem you typically use to check in to the net.? If you use SoundModem or Direwolf for packet, EasyTerm is a good choice on Windows, and QtTermTCP can be used on Linux or Mac.? If you are using VARA, the author provides a VARA terminal that can be used.? Hardware TNC users or users with a TNC built in to their radio can use a serial terminal emulator of choice (PuTTY or Terminus for instance), or their favorite dedicated packet program that supports their TNC.
?
Step 1.? Open your terminal and connect to your TNC or modem.
Step 2.? Using the terminal, connect to a Winlink gateway of your choice.
Step 3.? When you get to the prompt ("CMS via W0NE >" for instance), type Login to authenicate yourself to the Winlink system.
Step 4.? You will receive 3 numbers.? At the prompt you need to enter 6 charachters from your Winlink password.? 3 of them should be in the positions indicated by the 3 numbers in any order.? For instance if your password is "RadioIsFun123" and you are prompted for [174] a valid response might be siR123.? Another valid response might be RsiIsF.
?
Note:? Anyone who played the game Clue as a kid might see why this isn't the most secure system.? The upshot is it's possible to authenticate with simple equipment.? If you do this often, it may be a good idea to change your password frequently
?
Step 6.? At the prompt, type "SP W0NE"
Step 7.? Enter a Subject and hit enter.
Step 8.? Enter the standard check-in text as the body of the email.? Hit Enter.
Step 9.? On an empty line type "/EX" and hit enter.
Step 10.? Type "bye" to disconnect.
?
Here is the terminal output from my session to use as an example:

You can also type "Help" to see how to read any messages waiting for you on the CMS and other options.? I will paste the help text below.? The commands are extremely similar to a Packet BBS or PBBS on a packet TNC.? Feel free to play around to get familiar with they system.
?
Winlink is designed for automatic message transfer using Airmail, Paclink,?
Winlink Express or other client programs that support the B2F protocol.?
It will also accept limited keyboard commands.?
?
The below is subject to change --?
? ? Automations using this interface are discourged.
?
Your use of this system is acceptance of the risk associated with sending
portions of your password as part of the logon process.
?
Supported Telnet/VHF keyboard commands:
?
H or HELP gives you this file
?
? Send any command to initiate login. The CMS will respond with a challenge
? consisting of three digits who's values represent positions of characters?
? within your password. See <RESP>.
?
<RESP> - This is a six character response to the login challenge. Respond with?
? three password characters corresponding to the positions in the challenge
? plus three additional characters of your choosing (in any order).?
? Example: Password is AbC123. Login challenge is: 425. You send '1b2Qz5'.
? AbZ21t would also be valid since it contains the characters 1, b, and 2
? which correspond to the 4th, 2nd, and 5th character in your password.
??
LM - Lists all traffic pending for your callsign account.?
? Shows message ID (MID), date, size, from and subject.?
?
K <MID> - Example: K 1234_KN6KB Marks the pending message as delivered.?
?
KM - Mark all messages as delivered.?
?
B, BYE - Forces a disconnect of the link.
?
R <MID> - Example: R 1234_KN6KB? ?Read the specified message.?
? Only MIDs addressed to your call or originated by you may be read.
? Attachments are not supported.
?
RM - Read all pending unread messages to your callsign.
?
SP <Destination(s)> - Send a message to the destination(s) indicated.?
? Destinations may be a radio callsign or "SMTP:<email_address>"?
? (NOTE! be sure to include the colon after the SMTP!)??
? Multiple destinations should be separated by ";" or ","
? Example: SP W4ABC;SMTP:Johndoe@...;W1AW;SMTP:sam@...
??
You will be prompted for a subject of the new message and then prompted for the?
message body.
?
For the message body enter any text. End with /EX on a separate line.
?
Acceptance of the message will be confirmed. You will be sent a service message?
if the message cannot be delivered.
?

If you need help getting connected, feel free to reply to the group.

W0NE Winlink Net Reminder - Week 17, Winter Field Day Edition
Hi Everyone,
Since Winter Field Day is this weekend, it's a good time to dust off our portable equipment and make sure everything is in good working order. For this week's check-in, break out your go kit, portable rig, or whatever you would use in an emergency situation, and use it to check-in to the net.? Send an ICS-213 form (if your client does forms) to W0NE over whatever mode your radio supports.? I'm not brave enough to do this outdoors since rain is in the forecast, so don't feel like you have to either if you don't want. I will have my station listening for P2P packet connections to KU0HN on 145.030 if you would like to do this exercise P2P. Next week we will do the exercise with no client. 73, Ben - KU0HN |
