I also have the Kenwood TH-D7A radios, but have not used them since I moved back to NJ from SC. I do remember that aside from the keypad entry, you can also use the knob on top to scroll through the letters and numbers when you are in the mode for entering data. The knob is much faster than trying to go through all of the keyboard pressing on the radio keypad.?
