Newest toy
Hi All, Today I accuired a new toy for me. This is a Balzers BA-500 coater. It is in bad condition, but I got a lot of spare parts with it. Two Balzers DUO-25 forvacuumpump, two diffusion pump, a lot of Apiezon AP201 diffusion oil, gages fittings, Viton orings, boats, evaporation materials. So I can play a lot with it. Possibly I am going to rebuild and install an electron beam evaporation source under the chamber. Attila The Hun

record time 12
I may have set a record tonight. I started washing a previously stripped mirror at about 7 PM. By 7:40 it was in the vacuum chamber; evewntually got the pressure down to about 7x10^-5 torr. By 8:45 pm it was not only aluminized, it was also IN THE TELESCOPE, got it roughly collimated, and we were using it to observe our Moon, Saturn and at least 4 of its moons, the Orion nebula, and we did some preliminary star testing on Sirius. Can anybody beat that? Guy

For Sale
Hi guys, The pending sale of my 8 inch diffusion pump and the Welch 1397 mechanical pump fell through due to shipping costs to California so I have posted photo's of them in a new "For Sale" album on the Group. The photo's show the HyVac-28 & Welch 1397 Mechanical pumps to be dirty. That's true! They have sat in the barn for quite a while and they will have to be cleaned before use and refilled with oil (which I already have and will do before the sale). Also shown are the 8 inch and 6 inch diffusion pumps. They are much cleaner but still will have to be cleaned and have the oil changed before use. The purchaser will need to do this as it requires disassembly of the pumps to clean the internals. I have diff pump oil that will be included with the pumps. Not shown are the Deposition Monitors, Sensor Heads, Crystals, In-vac cables that I had reserved for Drew or the 20 inch diameter X 1 inch thick S/S baseplate w/feedthrough plugs or the 6 inch "Tee". Both mate to the 6 inch diffusion pump and valve (think Fusor here) etc ... Any one wanting to purchase any of these items or all of them, let me know but be advised most of these items, especially the vacuum pumps, will be heavy and costly to ship from Central Illinois. If interested in more info or more photo's etc, contace me direct. Prices were posted earlier and are negotiable, trades etc. Thanks, Ken Hunter

Vacuum Equipment for sale. 12
I have for sale a lifetime accumulation of vacuum related equipment for sale. There are 2 decent mechanical pumps, an 18" SS baseplate, two 6 inch diffusion pumps and valves with cold traps, ion gauge tubes and controllers, thermo gauges and sensors, misc valves etc. Most of these could support a working chamber or two and many more items too numerous to remember or list. I am also interested in Ham Radio gear to refurbish or use as a possible trade for some of this gear. Make me an offer and we can discuss an exchange of assets. Ken Hunter

Can you vacuum coat aluminum over gold? 2
I've received a few mirrors that are gold-coated; under that is a layer of what appears to be nickel. It's all quite didfficult to get off with an ordinary polishing pitch lap (for one thing, it sticks to the lap! The pitch comes off and STICKS on the coating!). What's worse, some of these are already flats whose figure I don't want to mess with at all, physically, so using a pitch lap is out of the question on them. I am hearing that it is very much a PITA to remove gold coatings chemically. (I don't much like the idea of mixing up aqua regia, anysay). Question: Can one use a good vacuum chamber to deposit a coating of aluminum directly on top of an existing coating of gold, which, in turn, lies on a coating of nickel, which lies on a glass blank? Making Vacuum Chamber
Some time ago, I scavenged a piece of stainless steel pipe. It is about 12" diameter, and has a 1/8" wall thickness. It's about six inches in length. I'm thinking this would make a decent vacuum chamber. My thought is to machine the ends square, and weld a ring on each end to make a flange. Drill it for suitable bolt holes, then clean and polish the interior. A plate for the top and bottom would be needed. I can do TIG welding, so that's not a big problem. I was wondering if the group had any suggestions. -- Paul Anderson VE3HOP wackyvorlon@... http://www.andersonloco.com QRP ARCI #13228, GQRP #12447

The First Beam 8
Hi All, First I wish you a Happy New year. Well many of your guys asked me a video of my ebeam gun or source. Normally I don't like tell things or show things if I am not 100 percent sure that is work correctly. In the case of my ebeam gun I am only sure 99% that is works corrcectly. But to get it work 100% correctly I need more time. I also don't want to let your guys wait and wait, and maybe you think I did not do anything and the gun won't be finished. So my gun is not ready yet, but I have made a video for you of the first beam. The video is available on the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch_private?v=IOZCu9vET3c&sharing_token=AmfLz5dvPZDY6bGgDYI-iw You can skip the first one minute does not happens anything! Please note, that is a private video only 25 people can view it. Under the video I speak on my mother languange. Please apologise I was to excited. Please add comments! On the video the beam melts aluminium, and as you can see its shape is tailed. That is what I have to fix. Otherwise everything works fine. I hope I can evaporate metal in a few days. Attila The Hun

Box Coater Question 3
There's an auction at a metal supplier tomorrow. Might be a place to pick up some sheets of steel, hopefully stainless, for very cheap. Building a box coater might be a fun winter project. Anyone know what the minimum thickness of the walls for the box coater?

Thin film monitoring crystal sensors? 5
Hi Ken, Just a quick question, for the XMS-1 deposition monitor we¡¯re after 6mHz crystals (like this eBay item# 7612478878) right? Now just have to design a crystal holder with shutter that is ¡°easy¡± to build in the home shop environment¡.. Cheers, Thomas Janstrom. Little Gems. http://tjlittlegems.com

A video tour of my chamber. 2
When I built the chamber, YouTube wasn't all that. However, since then times have changed. I thought I'd put to together some video blogs about the chamber, how I cobbled it together, and my approaches to its implementation. I've got about 3 hours of video to go thru while recording the coating process on two mirrors yesterday. It takes forever to edit and re-encode, so until I get them done, here a video tour of the chamber I did in a single take (to avoid editing it!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2FhHuFrZrQ -- Take Care, James Lerch http://www.youtube.com/user/JlerchTampa (My helicopter crash videos and stuff) http://lerch.no-ip.com/atm (My telescope construction, testing, and coating site) http://lerch.no-ip.com/ChangFa_Gen (My 15KW generator project) " Press on: nothing in the world can take the place of perseverance. What to use to make glass really clean before aluminize? 10
Dont really know what to use to clean for example glass before aluminize it but have heard that different types of chemicals will help but dont really know the name of these if chemicals really are used. Ordinary dishwash is the first of all to use but this is ofcourse far from enough but its the things after this that im after, anybody know what to use to get a 100%+ clean surface? Rather not any exotic expensive chemicals but more or less common household chemicals if there might be any that can be used for this. Or if here might be someone that happen to know any store that sell chemicals or anything for this and that will ship worldwide would be great. Regards Henry

New tunsgten evaporator coil
Greetings All, Over the years I've been tolerating my tugsten evaporator design. The main problem I had is short life span of the tungsten. After only a half dozen coatings, the tungsten would erode and break in two at in opportune moments. The other problem I had with my tungstens was the molten aluminum would occasionally "Run" uphill away from the center of the tungsten. The erosion problem was mostly due to a ball of molten aluminum forming at the bottom of the loop. Molten aluminum will dissolve tungsten, and a ball of aluminum concentrated the effect. Examples of this are seen in the forth image in this image set. http://lerch.no-ip.com/atm/Projects/Coil_Tungsten To my surprise, simply winding an 0.08" tungsten coil around the loop of 0.30" main tungsten heater solved all these problems. The molten aluminum wicks out over the length of the thin tungsten coil, and no ball of molten aluminum is formed. Also, the molten aluminum no longer runs away from the hot spot. Wooo Hooo :-) So, I just thought I'd share my little observation. -- Take Care, James Lerch http://www.youtube.com/user/JlerchTampa (My helicopter crash videos and stuff) http://lerch.no-ip.com/atm (My telescope construction, testing, and coating site) http://lerch.no-ip.com/ChangFa_Gen (My 15KW generator project) " Press on: nothing in the world can take the place of perseverance. WASSUP ? 9
It's really been quiet on VacuumX lately and I was wondering if anyone has been doing anything interesting they could share with the Group. I'd hate to see Yahoo delete the Group due to inactivity. I have recently moved and now have a BIG shop where I am getting concrete poured for the floor and partitioning off rooms to be used for my ATM, Vacuum and HAM radio activities... Will be retiring soon and then I can start working all the projects I've been putting off. WhooooHoooo! Will post some photos of this later today. What are you up to? Ken Hunter
