Box Coater Question

glinos7124

There's an auction at a metal supplier tomorrow. Might be a place to pick up some sheets of steel, hopefully stainless, for very cheap. Building a box coater might be a fun winter project. Anyone know what the minimum thickness of the walls for the box coater?

Hi,

I saw an old box chamber in one of our labs once a while back - it was
an 18"-a-side cube and the walls were 5/8" thick solid stainless steel plate - weighed an absolute bomb! That's the problem with flat-sided chambers - they need to be so thick to withstand the vacuum.

Cheers,

Lindsay

The front and rear of my 24x24" chamber are fabricated from 1/2" thick normal plate steel. I probably would not go any thiner unless you start building a skeletal system and skining it with thiner material.

BTW, my 1/2" thick front door bows inward about 0.01" or so as the air is pumped out :-)
