New Photos Homebrew High Vacuum System Roy M. 3
Hi Everybody, I've been working on converting an air compressor tank into a bell chamber. I had and idea to set up the chamber horizontally because I couldn't find a thick plate for the base. I thought I would use the end of the tank for a door and use two angle flanges to stiffen the cut ends of the tank and to form a sealing surface for an O-ring. The base flange will mount to the supporting frame of the system. As I got into working with the tank and flanges it occurred to me that I could use the end of the tank for my base just as well in a vertical configuration. I think I would like that better anyway as it allows easier access to the goodies inside the chamber. The tank- end base allows for plenty of room for mounting feedthroughs too. If you would like to check my progress I have added a file in the Photos section titled Homebrew High Vacuum System Roy M. I included a cross-section sketch of the mating surfaces of my angle flange seal idea and a photo of some of the pumps and other things collected so far. Comments are welcome. Roy M.

Aluminizing coating has a black tinge 6
Hi Guys, I am new to the group and have just started to play around with aluminizing mirrors. I have a system which I managed to scrounge and can achieve a vacuum of around 1x 10-4 torr. The first experiment produced a really good aluminium coat. At this stage I thought this is really easy. Pride goeth before a fall, my second try produced a coating with a very dark tinge to the coating. Anyone have any clues as to what might be wrong. Any help would be much appreciated. regards Joe

Crystal holder pass thru hardware 2
Crystal holder pass thru hardware Ken, Is this the correct connector ???? http://www.smelectronics.us/smaconnectorpanelpostcontact.htm http://www.smelectronics.us/smapanelreceptpcbpressmount.htm It sure looks like the same thing that came on the pass thru that I just bought off EBAY. This is the site that came up in a google search of the term "microdot electrical connector". I am looking at SC3740 $12.00 as it seems to be ready for solder and has some length for connecting the BnC part to the other end. I think I can use something like a 1" diameter aluminum bulkhead fitting out of the fluid world as the actual body of the pass thru. Cutting the 0-ring groove in the hub is easy. If this is the right thing then I will make up a few of the pass thru's. Andrew

Inficon XMS Controller Manual posted
Greetings... I have received several questions via email this week concerning how to measure the Thickness of Thin Films. There's a ton of info on the web about this but I have also received some specific questions about the Inficon XMS Thin Film Deposition Controller/Monitor that Thomas and I have been working with. To help make the information easier to access, I have scanned and posted the entire Instruction Manual for this controller in the Group's PHOTO section under "Inficon..." . Some of this information is specific to the Inficon Controller, some is outdated, but there is a lot of information that is Generic to thin film deposition and it would not hurt to take a look through the photos in that folder to see the process, how it was developed and learn about how this particular type of device works. Ask any unanswered questions that you have about this AFTER reading the info, most of them are answered in the manual. Enjoy! Ken Hunter

Sputting vacuum system on ebay..... 7
Hi All, If there are any Aussie members (other than myself) there is a complete sputtering rig on eBay: http://tinyurl.com/6ykraq the going rate is really tempting right now, but as I have 90% of the bits on offer already not much there to tempt me. The only down side is its pick-up only in the Sydney area¡.. Cheers, Thomas Janstrom. Little Gems. www.tjlittlegems.com

"Yellow Box Coater" 21
Does anyone have any details on the Lerch/Jones box coater at the St. Petersburg Mirror Lab? Dimensions, materials, pumps, sensors,.... that kind of thing. I'm mulling over building one. It looks like a challenging, but doable project. tom

Cleaning and repairing a diffusion pump 3
As I mentioned in a previous reply I'm cleaning up and old 4" NRC diff. pump. The previous owners let it over heat and melt the splash guard to the bottom of the pump. I had to use a combination of acid to dissolve the stuck on aluminum and sand blasting to clean off the black crusty crud that was still stuck on the steel bottom of the pump. That's steel not stainless steel. Questions: The bottom of the pump rusts very easily now. What can I use to plate the steel to stop the rust? I read that copper is not good for the oil. Anyway you have to plate steel with nickel before copper will stick. Nickel is nice but do I really have to send it to the plater? Can I tin the surface with some plumbers tin/silver solder? I know it can be used on copper plumbing for vac. systems but I have no clue how it will react with hot oil. Also what about Parkerizing? It's good for gun barrels what about the inside of diffusion pumps?? Thanks, Roy M.

I have the following equipment which I no longer have a need for.If Interested ,send me an e-mail. I can include photos. Speedivac 1sc 450 pump no base or motor. Condition unknown.(still sucks if turned over by hand) Welch R 1405 mounted with motor, no belt guard.Pumps .01 mm Hg or better on McLeod gauge. Welch R 1402 mounted with clutch and motor. Motor runs and starts on borrowed starting cap(540-648 microfarad from 3/4 horse motor) Had this one apart for inspection.Slight sleaks on rotor only. Patina removable with "Brasso". Will only go to .05mm by McLeod gauge.Suspect needs new static gasket on intake side.Shaft seal seeps~.2 to .4g of oil per hour running.Tight static. 2 Balzers 4 inch Butterfly valves in 6 inch riser with 3 auxiliary ports. 1 LN cold trap, mates above valves 1 SS adapter plate from Balzers valves to 6 bolt pattern 1 Veeco TG-6 thermocouple gauge controller and 4 Veeco type DV-1m gauge heads. Have no wiring to gauge heads (Francois, you may have them?) Transformer shows 300v AC on output side and meter is fine so probably works, although I have no way to verify at the moment. These are simple units with no active electronics. A number of Edwards "Speedivalves" and fittings and a small Edwards mechanical feedthrough. . I would prefer pickup, otherwise FOB Hamilton Ontario Canada. Everett Cairns

Introduction 4
Hi all, My name is Peter and I live in Southampton, UK. One of the reasons that I have joined this group is that I am working on an experiment where I need to generate a perfect vaccuum. Obviously I could do this with a diffusion pump with ease. However I am trying to build all the parts myself I have all the tools for metalwork (lathes, milling machines....it would be a very long list). Has anyone on this group made one of their own and would they be interested in sharing their plans. Many Thanks Pete..

overcoating ideas
Hello Gang, I have been busy hooking up a monster 4 kw welding power supply to a tiny little tantalum boat that I made. All this in hopes of evaporating some SiO ( silicon monoxide ) and getting it to fly across the vacuum of my chamber and overcoat a freshly aluminized mirror. I can pump 2000 amps at just under 2 volts thru the boat and the transformers dont even get warm. The same can not be said for the little boat.......... the first one became a sad little splatter pattern on the floor of my chamber :_(((((( So to the question : as my little boat filled with SiO is covered, how does one know if the SiO has indeed evaporated and left the boat ??? Is there a poor boy's version of the crystal oscillator thing that tells you that you have actually put some SiO on a surface ??? Andrew in sunny Florida

eBay Alerts and STUFF to get rid of.... 7
wrote: What you are seeing is the collapse of my empire... I have just too much STUFF laying about that has cost me an arm and a leg over the years and now it is time I start thinking about what I want to keep as I approach my retirement. If we are going to make the big move back to the mid-west (Kentucky area) after I retire, I don't want to have to move (AGAIN) all the STUFF I brought down from Illinois when I moved here 5 years ago unless I am going to actually get to use it. I'll probably be going crazy this summer (it's the heat) and empty out the garage and storage sheds. I know I have at least 3 Deposition controllers/monitors, vacuum controllers, various diffusion pumps, valves, gauges, ION tubes and TC's, and misc etc to get rid of. I don't see my dream vacuum chamber coming together anytime soon so I'm going to downsize the pile of goodies to a more manageable level. Stay tuned for more eBay alerts or if someone on the Group has a need, just ask and I'll see if it's on the disposal list. Hmmm... Speaking of that, does anyone have a need for a 20X1 inch SS baseplate with 1 inch feedthroughs and a flange adapted to a 6 inch diffusion pump with a gate valve and cooled chevron box in between? The valve and diff pump will need to be cleaned due to 5 years storage in the dusty Texas panhandle but otherwise it's all in good shape. Thomas has received the brother of this valve, cooler and diff pump so he can relate the quality of the items. Most photo's are in the Groups photo area and offers will be considered. Do be aware that you can also sell, buy, trade STUFF here on VacuumX, just don't make a business out of it. Ken Hunter ps... Thomas, I know that I still owe you an oscillator for the XMS-1 I sent you. The small workshop in the corner of the garage is coming together very slowly. Maybe someday in the near future I'll finally get it made for you.

In vacuum wire connector
Hi, there, I need to find an in vacuum wire connector to connect a bunch of bare wires. The connectors can be baked at 400 C. It is similar to crimp socket contact which can be connect and disconnect easily. Anyone has a clue where to search those wired stuff? Thanks. What is most efficient, chevron baffle or cold cap? 9
Hi! Coldcaps in DP:s are quite efficient but if im not wrong so are chevron baffles. What is best to use if you have to choose? Regards Henry
