Re: Prop shaft stuffing box maintenance

Re: Water strainer for engine

My pleasure. ?FYI, Ours is mounted in the port cabinet just next to the engine aft of the "galley" area. ?The engine compartment is pretty tight, as you are well aware, and I think this is a good location for the strainer. ?In the winter I pump a gallon of environmentally safe antifreeze (the pink stuff from West Marine) in to the raw water system (we have a fresh water cooling system on our 2GM20F). ?Our boat has a bypass valve to allow us to easily winterize the cooling system. ?In Nashville we don't haul out in the winter, and the boats stay in the water. ?If you don't winterize or drain the strainer, freezing water will crack the sight glass.

Re: Water strainer for engine

Thanks for the info on the Groco strainer!

Joe

Re: Water strainer for engine

My 1986 S2-27 is equipped with a Yanmar 2GM20F engine and it has a Groco strainer. ?I don't recall the exact model, but the one I have has a bronze body with a metal strainer and a clear plastic sight glass. Here is a link to one that looks like mine.

?

Water strainer for engine

I have read about in line water strainers that keep gunk out of the impeller/water pump. ?My boat does not have one. ?There is just the water line from the shut off valve to where it attaches below the impeller housing. ?I have the Yanmar 1GM10 diesel in my boat. ?Do any of you have a strainer between the shut off valve and the impeller? ?If so, what make/model?

thanks,

Joe

Re: Rudder Klunk

Hi Joe,

I've replaced the rudder bushings a couple of times on my boat and gotten them from S2. There are gudgeon bushings that look like white tubes that the pintles drop in to & they are some sort of plastic or composite like derlin. There are also small, plastic, clip type bushings that go inside the receiving holes keeping metal-to-metal contact from happening between pintle & gudgeon. I'm not at my boat right now so I can't do much better describing this. Maybe someone else can.

The last time I bought them I bought a few sets directly from S2. I'm down to my last, unused set of spares. Back then I called their parts dept. @ 616-394-7492 & talked with their "sailboat guy," Scott Bytwerk. This was in the '90s, though, so I don't know if the info or personnel is current.

The gudgeon bushings were labelled "8.1 Gudgeon Bushings" and the others simply "Small, Clip Type Bushings (27)." I bought 2 sets that time and it cost me a little over $100. I think I had to cut the last set of gudgeon bushings to size.

HTH,

Frank

Hi,

I am very close to buying a S2 27. ?On the test sail I also found the rudder klunk issue. ?I have read through the various posts in the group, but I could not find any information on size of bearings/bushings needed. ?I believe one post mentioned Thompson bearings and I think it showed the inside diameter to be 5/8", but I could not find what the outside diameter needs to be, Thompson had a few different OD sizes to choose from. ?I also could not find the length of bearing/bushing needed and didn't think to measure for them on the test sail.

Does anyone know the ID/OD's of these items and the length needed? ?Please post them if you do.

Thanks!

Re: Prop shaft stuffing box maintenance

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Joe, In my younger years (25 LBS Ago) I could lay on top of the engine and reach the stuffing box to replace the packing and change the transmission oil at the same time.? There is also a removable panel aft of the engine but the batteries will need to come out and there is only a little room between the fuel tank and the panel, not easy but can be done.? You want some water to drip into the pan so you know the shaft is lubed/cooled with water so that could be the source.? Also the engine has a drain tap on the starboard side near the fuel filter that might be open or leaking.? And last the water pump will drip in the pan when the seal is worn out, in fact it drips on the lower oil line and will rust it out so keep an eye on it.? I have had all of these little issues and none are a huge problem to fix.?

I know this posting is old, but I am in the process of checking out an S2 27 so I am hoping someone can help. ?I asked the current owner how to access the stuffing box as the engine compartment is pretty tight. ?He wasn't sure himself, but it looks like the only access is from the starboard side cockpit locker. ?Am I right on this? ?If not, how should I get access to the stuffing box? ?Based on what I have read here the water I found underneath the engine could be from a leaky stuffing box. ?Any other thoughts on how water can get in the area directly underneath the engine?

thanks,

Joe

Re: Prop shaft stuffing box maintenance

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

The previous owner on my boat sawed open the panel between the water tank and engine. Removing the water tank temporarily then gave me plenty of access to the stuffing box.?

Re: S2 27 sailing performance in heavy weather

Thanks to all of you for your feedback. ?My wife was especially happy to hear the S2 is not as tender as our O'day!

I hope to see the boat this weekend, so keeping my fingers crossed.

Since it has been slow on this group how about everybody reply with their name, hull number, location and current status. ?I also have no issue with offering used sails or other sailing equipment for sale on this list, as long as it your personal stuff. ?If we get a bunch of offers to buy Chinese Rolex's I can turn it off again. Maintenance tips and tricks are always good. ?What do you think about allowing images to be posted ? ?I turned it on on another list and it has not caused problems.

Hi George great to hear from you! Hawaii sailing is not as awesome as you would think! Rough, choppy, VERY gusty, super-inflated boat market (sold my crappy 1970 Catalina 22 with no trailer for $2,500?!?!)

I'd take Kentucky Lake any day of the week! We are moving to Tacoma soon, and I'm ready. Apparently our former S2 27 is in Portland now, maybe we will go visit it haha.

Joe,
My old
friend Mark is right.? The 27 is much better suited to
rough conditions.? In a 50K race last fall we had to beat
the last half of the race into steep waves and winds at
20-25, gusting over 30.? My little 27 was the only boat in
our division that didn't drop out. A?few of the big
boats dropped out too.? So I think you'll be ok going
with the S2
Oh, and
Hey Mark.? Long time.? How's Hawaii? Never mind, I
think I know the answer.

Joe,

I have owned an O'Day 26 and an S2 27 (but I no longer
own my S2)

Although a lot of the specs are similar, I can tell you the
S2 is in a different league when it comes to sailing. When I
purchased mine I had to move it about 80 miles down the
Chesapeake against 15-20 knot winds and 3-4 foot seas. It
was an extremely rough voyage, but the boat behaved very
well. We had to go with reefed main alone.

The deep draft keels makes all the difference in the world
over the O'Day's configuration - it is a stiff boat.
Hope it works out for you!

Hi,

I am looking at an S2 27.

?I am on the western end of Lake Erie, so we
occasionally

get some winds 15+ Kts. and some pretty good chop to go
with

it.

We currently own an

O'day 25. ?I am concerned that the S2 27 may not
handle

much better since it is only 2 ft longer and 1000 lbs

heavier. ?Any opinions on how the S2 handles in heavy

weather is greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Joe

Re: S2 27 sailing performance in heavy weather

Joe,
My old friend Mark is right.? The 27 is much better suited to rough conditions.? In a 50K race last fall we had to beat the last half of the race into steep waves and winds at 20-25, gusting over 30.? My little 27 was the only boat in our division that didn't drop out. A?few of the big boats dropped out too.? So I think you'll be ok going with the S2

Oh, and Hey Mark.? Long time.? How's Hawaii? Never mind, I think I know the answer.

When I purchased mine I had to move it about 80 miles down the Chesapeake against 15-20 knot winds and 3-4 foot seas. It was an extremely rough voyage, but the boat behaved very well. We had to go with reefed main alone.
The deep draft keels makes all the difference in the world over the O'Day's configuration - it is a stiff boat. Hope it works out for you!

Hi,
I am looking at an S2 27.
?I am on the western end of Lake Erie, so we occasionally
get some winds 15+ Kts. and some pretty good chop to go with
it.
We currently own an
O'day 25. ?I am concerned that the S2 27 may not handle
much better since it is only 2 ft longer and 1000 lbs
heavier. ?Any opinions on how the S2 handles in heavy
weather is greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Joe

Re: S2 27 sailing performance in heavy weather

Joe,
I have owned an O'Day 26 and an S2 27 (but I no longer own my S2)
Although a lot of the specs are similar, I can tell you the S2 is in a different league when it comes to sailing.

Re: S2 27 sailing performance in heavy weather

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Joe,

Our S2 27 seems to handle beat in 15-25 knots of air, is well balanced and handles the chop quite well. ?We've spent a great deal of time on Lake Huron and the North Channel and she's a great boat.

?

Hi,

I am looking at an S2 27. ?I am on the western end of Lake Erie, so we occasionally get some winds 15+ Kts. and some pretty good chop to go with it.

We currently own an O'day 25. ?I am concerned that the S2 27 may not handle much better since it is only 2 ft longer and 1000 lbs heavier. ?Any opinions on how the S2 handles in heavy weather is greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Joe
