Re: New Tack

err..make that LOWER cost...not loser cost...

New Tack

From the group manager...and founder:

This Spring I sold my S2 27 after 8 years of ownership.

For a variety of reasons I have chosen to downsize to a smaller boat...Cape Dory 22 on trailer...easier to manage, loser cost, etc..

My 27 served as a great boat and platform for cruising and racing.? But it was time for me to move on.

I will keep this Group site open until the end of the year, then, if someone hasn't contacted me about taking it over I will shut it down.

I am not sure I'm able to transfer ownership of a group to another person, so if someone does want to take over the files may need to be transferred over to new person, not sure the posts can be dealt with...

Thanks

Rick

Standard Horizon radio location advise

Hi All,

I'm going to update my VHF radio & am thinking about the Standard Horizon GX 1600/1700. I have an '86 S2-27.

I will want to mount the radio below deck in the main cabin area. I'd like to locate it on the starboard side just forward of the head, on that narrow portion of shelf just above the settee.

My question is: Since the GPS antenna is built-in to the front-end of the radio unit, will the GPS functions on the GX 1700 be compromised if mounted below-deck? If I need to use an additional chart plotter or external antenna to get a good GPS signal anyway, I'd go ahead with the GX1600.

Anyone with either radio like to comment before I purchase? I want to get in before the 7/31 rebate deadline.

Thanks!

Take care,

Frank

Re: Hull Numbers

By all means, take the day off! I did. I first saw my boat at Percy Priest in 85 while buying a Catalina 22. The boat was sold to someone at Ky Lake but came up for sale a year later. I bought it from them and brought it back down the river to Nashville in August of 86 and have owned it ever since. I haven't seen another boat that compares for my needs and it still works like it did when I bought it. It took two years to sell my 22 but that was ok too.

Hull Numbers

I haven't seen any posts in a while, not sure the list is still active but here goes anyway. I tried to renew my state registration on line and ran into an issue with the Hull ID number format. My boat is an 85 and my hull number is SSU270150585. The state says it is an incorrect (format) number because the 9th digit should be a letter not the number zero. It has been fine for nearly 30 years but now there is a question. According to the state Hull Number Checker the 9th digit should be a letter indicating the month, A=Jan, B=Feb, etc. Using that format there would be no letter "O", but if I replace the zero with a letter it takes it. I know there was a change in the HIN's just before my boat was produced but it doesn't match the earlier convention unless the 9th and 10th digit are a numerical reference to the month, 05 = May. Has anyone else run into this issue? I can easily replace the zero with a letter "O" and it will accept it but I wonder what's correct..... Confused? me too!

Hull No. 15 (pretty sure)

Re: Cockpit Cushions

Thanks, that's exactly what I was thinking for splitting them.? What I wanted to know also, was where you might have had them made.? I wanted to hit the ground running this year, but my boat is on the hard nearly two hours away.? So I don't have the dimensions.? So I thought I could start here before taking that drive just to measure.

Re: Cockpit Cushions

I had cushions made a few years ago. We made 4 cushions; 2 that are on top of the hatch covers and 2 that extend to the cabin. I thought it was important to be able to open the lazarette without moving a bunch of cushions or have one overlap the opening.

Re: Looking for Used S2 27 deep keel

Would you be interested in a shoal keel?
?
It's hull number 50,? I? believe 1986. It has the one-lunger Yanmar [there is a 27 with the 20hp, I've seen it on youtube, guy named Butch Petty, last I heard his boat was for sale in Georgia].
?
She's in pretty good shape. We have a number of jobs on the spring list, varnish, paint lazarettes, lockers, etc. Install new bow light I bought last fall.? I have bushings for the rudder that I will install during the haul out. Put in new v-berth cushions, need to make covers for those. We weekend on her frequently. Has a brand new holding tank, installed but not plumbed. Removed the water tank when we layed her up, going to clean that before we put her back in.
?
Regular batten-ed main, Harken roller furler with 135 jib both serviceable, Asy spinnaker. Couple of anchors & rodes. Autopilot. Knotmeter doesn't work, depth does. I think it needs a sending unit for the speed, older unit, Signet I believe. She has Bimini, cockpit cushions, icebox, alcohol stove, 2 series 27 batteries.
?
She's a good sailer, I've had her up over 8 knots a couple of times. Sails well under either jib or main alone. Needs bottom paint. I think the stuff from last year was bottom food, not anti fouling, I had serious growth after 2 months. I was recovering from rotaror-cuff surgery and had a yard do it, don't know what they used,? but others on the upper bay said it was a bad year.
?
Let me know what you think.

Re: Looking for Used S2 27 deep keel

As far as I've been able to ascertain, the 2GM20F was installed as original equipment when our boat was commissioned. ?I'll have to go back to look at my documentation to see if I have any original dealer information etc. Based on Yanmar's specs the 2GM20 isn't really -that- much larger than the 10GM10. ?~100mm longer and ~50mm wider and 23b heavier. ?Our engine compartment is snug, but I'd have to look at Mark's boat, the other S2-27 on our lake, to compare to the 1GM10 equipped boats to see any difference. ?I just did a major service on the engine and sucked out and replaced all fluids-engine oil, heat exchanger antifreeze, and transmission lube, replaced both fuel filters, installed a new impeller, replaced the engine stop cable, and had the mechanic do a thorough going over of all systems. ?For a 1980's vintage boat, she's doing remarkably well.

I'm not the original owner, but thanks for thinking I would be that loyal and long term thinking. ?I'm pretty sure I am the 4th owner of this particular boat. ?She started out on the Great Lakes, was moved to the Neuse River area in North Carolina, and I moved her to Tennessee.
