Side stand

Is it verboten to leave the R90S on the sidestand for long periods? I ask because I injured my right arm / shoulder six months ago and it¡¯s still hard to use my right arm. Makes using the center stand nearly impossible, especially getting it off the center stand. -- For information about our Airbnb and things to do in and around Sergeantsville, NJ.

idling; clutch

Two quick questions (it's a '75, if it matters): 1. How much free clutch play to have at the beginning? 2. How long do you let the engine warm up on the centerstand (at present, mine warms up for 5-10 minutes, and it still stalling out around 850 RPM, unless I keep my wrist on the throttle). If I just get up and go around, it warms up quickly no problem. Thanks! best, James New Hope, PA (DO '75)

I will be a new R90s owner late next week. Might be sacrilege here because it is not a original R90s. I have nicknamed the bike "the mongrel" because it is a combination of different year R parts. The bike is DO with less than 2000 miles on a ground up rebuild and badged as a R90s. The work was done at San Jose BMW in California in cooperation between them and the current owner. I won't get into all the individual parts at this time but will later after picking up the bike. The highlights are it has a 1977 R100 frame, Engine cases and bottom end are R100, Heads are R100, Cylinders and pistons are R90s, Bodywork is R90s with new DO paint. Mufflers and pipes appear stock but are probably aftermarket. Suspension is updated to new Works Performance. Wheels were refreshed with new spokes, rims & Continental tires. I will be taking the bike to my mechanic Guenther Wuest directly after picking it up for a complete checkout & service. Guenther is a R90s specialist and has several R90s bikes in his shop currently for restoration. I am new to air heads but not BMW's. I currently own a pristine 2015 K1300HP. Look forward to sharing with this group.

Mechanic in Louisville, KY?
2
Long time memory for you to try: In 2014 three of us rode the Trans America on R80G/Ss. If I recall correctly we were in Louisville, KY and needed mechanical help so we went to the local BMW dealer, a guy younger than our airheads told told us they don¡¯t work on airheads , but gave us the name & address of a local good airhead mechanic who we went to and who fixed our problem(s). SO call the dealer several to mes ? until maybe you can find someone who recalls the guy. If he exists, AND if he is still working ? Mac Kirkpatrick Camping in AZ Then the MOA in Great Falls, MT BUT can we cross into Canada and go to AK ? I am not sure I would have bought this bike if he wasn't so close. The local BMW dealer in Louisville isn't even competent on the newer BMW's much less a old air cooled bike. The bike I am buying has a lot of neat updates but the owner had 32mm Bing CV's installed for reliability and I already have a new set of the 38mm Delorto's which belong on the bike. I also intend to update the ignition to the crank driven Endura Last/Sachse system and coils. I love project bikes and this one should be a interesting one. -- Mac Kirkpatrick Glenmoore, PA "After all, what is adventure, but inconvenience, properly regarded?" C. Donahue

Pointless Ignition
8
The points on my 75 SS have closed up twice over the last few years; and although it is a roadside correction, it's hard to perform in the dark. I have read opinions recently on the virtues of stock points, with and without ignition booster vs pointless ignition. For those holding onto points, I bet it is a rare holdout driving a primary auto with points. There is a reason point technology is obsolete. Mine is a looker but also a driver; and mostly stock. Stock performance is fine with me. So I am inclined to abandon my points. I would like for those with experience with the various systems offered to opine on their relative virtues. I can go either with or without mechanical advance. Reliability and the ability to perform a simple roadside retrofit to stock setup in the event of e-ignition failure is important to me. I appreciate your advice.

R90/S instruments

Last weekend I took my 1975 R90/S on a short 400-mile R.T. trip to Maine. After the trip, my bike only has 8,100 miles on it. On my return trip, the speedometer started to make lots of funny noises. The odometer appears to be working properly buy speedometer readings became wildly inaccurate. While I¡¯m having the speedo overhauled, I think it will be best to service the tachometer too. Can anyone recommend a good speedometer overhaul shop? Ted

SOLD...Joe's K100/EML GT
Joe Dille¡¯s 86 K100/EML GT Sidecar Rig SOLD on Sunday. Jim, the new owner is from NY State; Joe was originally from White Plains, NY Jim is a mechanical engineer; Joe was a mechanical engineer Jim is a pilot; Joe was a pilot Jim has airhead BMWs, a R90S clone and sidecars; Joe had airhead BMWs, a real R90S and sidecars I think it went to a good home¡.all parties seemed very pleased. There¡¯s a good chance I will be delivering the bike to the new owner in Ithaca, NY. Jim said if I ride the rig to Ithaca, he would fly me home to Harleysville. I told him he had a deal and he doesn¡¯t even have to land the plane, just provide me with a parachute¡it¡¯s been a few years, but it just like riding a bike. Thanks to everyone involved, there were about 12 parties interested in the sidecar, If Jim decided not to buy, there was another party from MD, who was ready to ride up on Sunday, immediately after Jim left. It was a solid rig, Joe, Patti, the kids and dogs enjoyed it very much and Patti has many fond memories. I think the new owner will do the same for many years to come¡.let¡¯s hope so. If you have the time, please read the attached article above regarding what went into the decision to build an EML rig and all that was involved. Patti forwarded that to me last week and I really enjoyed reading the article. Hard to believe, but Joe states that he had over 200 hours building and attaching the sidecar to his new 86 K100. It¡¯s a really good story, I hope you enjoy reading. Todd P.S. Big thank you to Bill Dudley for hosting and administering the Airhead mail lists and for forwarding this particular posting to the NY Airheads, which I neglected to do¡.Thanks Bill, hope you plan to attend our VBMWMO FALL RALLY. 30 Sept. -3 October, much more info, stay tuned everyone. new R90S owner

Hey All - I've been riding BMWs exclusively since 1987 and am excited to finally join the ranks of R90S owners. It's a 1975 DO. Any "must have" modifications? It's bone stock, as of now. Also, what gas do you use? I was going to buy VP Vintage Lead <https://vpracingfuels.com/product/vp-vintage-leaded/?c=217> unless someone thinks there is a superior fuel? FYI, I live in Bucks County PA, and enjoyed meeting Hans on two of his trips (this is one of the bikes he signed). best, James

Oil Pan Leakage
4
Hi Guys My ¡°S¡± is again having some leakage at the left side of the oil pan gasket/seem. When I bought the bike a few years back, it had leakage. I removed the pan and cleaned the mating surfaces and installed a new OEM gasket and torqued per specs. Was good, but is now seeping again. Tried a little more torque on the bolts, but no improvement. Any thoughts? Should I replace the gasket again with BMW OEM¡or has anyone had better success with other materials? This article doesn¡¯t recommend silicone. https://bmwmotorcycletech.info/pangasket.htm Thanks Bob PS ¨C I may try hint #6A in the suspect locations first. HINT #6A: There have been instances of annoying leaks from the pan bolt located below the oil canister area. Use NON-hardening version of Permatex Form-A-Gasket on that bolt's threads and on the bolt washer.

new R90S owner - favorite mods

This is a "sleeper" mod to get better brakes. The stock brakes don't have great "feel" and yet you want to keep the bike as stock-looking as possible, to maintain its value. My solution: 1. replace under tank master cylinder (17mm) with one from any of the single disk slash 6's (R90/6, R75/6, etc.), which is 14mm). 2. replace the 38mm ATE calipers with 40mm calipers from an R100/7. Paint them black to make the look stock. FULL details are here: https://www.r90s.info/Articles/upgrade_brakes.html Bill Dudley NJ Airmarshal r90s.info owner/webmaster
