Locked R90/S instruments

Last weekend I took my 1975 R90/S on a short 400-mile R.T. trip to Maine. After the trip, my bike only has 8,100 miles on it. ?On my return trip, the speedometer started to make lots of funny noises. The odometer appears to be working properly buy speedometer readings became wildly inaccurate. While I’m having the speedo overhauled, I think it will be best to service the tachometer too. Can anyone recommend a good speedometer overhaul shop?

Ted

I had good luck with Palo Alto on my /5 speedo. Stop in if you get to NH! Steve

I had the same with my 76 R90/6 with the tach. ?Erratic and noisy.?

I took it apart and greased it and also did the speedometer. ? All working great. ?I found some photos online and could look for the links.?

I’m in CT. ?I heard there was someone in NH or VT I believe and heard of someone in Milwaukee that rebuilds them.?

Mine was all dried out. ?My bike has about 40,000.?

Ted,

When mechanical guages start acting up, making noises, jerky needle, stuff like that - disconnect the cable right now, not when you get home or even the next town. Find a wide spot in the road or a driveway and disconnect that cable!?

It's best getting both gauges serviced since when one needs attention, the other isn't far behind.?

Inactivity is bad for lube - it dries up and leaves just the carrier whatever that is - soap? No lubrication there!

There are several places to send them in the US - N Hollywood, Overseas, Palo Alto (expensive), and Wirespokes.?

Terry

I used speedometer service company in Milwaukee. 414-463-6660. Quick turnaround. Good price and gauge cluster looks brand new.

Where are you located?
I had Palo Alto Speedometer rebuild my speedometer and tach, and was very pleased with their work.

I used white lithium grease on the gears using a qTip and acid brush. ?And I used a 3 in 1 oil drops elsewhere.?

Both are smooth and quiet now.?
