Locked Great article on detonation
Hi, I think you will find this article by Kevin Cameron of Cycle World interesting. https://www.cycleworld.com/story/bikes/detonation-engine-knock-ping-call-it-what-you-will/ He explains the difference between detonation and pre-ignition very well. The pictures give you a good reason to back off the throttle as soon as you hear a ping on your R90s. Locked R90S "Project" sought 3
Howdy gang, I¡¯ve got a friend looking for an R90S ¡°project¡±. He¡¯s a pretty accomplished airplane builder and former custom bike builder and is NOT looking for a finished or restored bike. He wants one he can work on and bring back to life. If anyone has or knows of an R90S in need of a new home, (where it will be beautifully restored and cared for), please let me know and I'll pass along the info to my friend. Thanks in advance! Locked '74 R90S for Sale, 3k Miles
Nice Machine, only 3k miles, very descriptive and somewhat informative ad below, but needs a few changes. He obviously has Hans A. Muth¡¯s named incorrectly, but I did get a kick from this observation: ¡°BMW, ¡.the motorcycle of pipe smoking professors¡± 1974 BMW R90S in the ad below... $19,500..USD.... Engine Size 898 cc Miles 3k The Iconic Hans Furth Designed BMW Superbike A couple decades before Bob Lutz became a well-known name in the US Auto Industry, he was cutting his teeth at BMW's automotive division in German. On weekends he toured Europe on his motorcycle. The Japanese motorcycles invasion had basically shuttered the English motorcycle manufactures and made BMW the motorcycle of pipe smoking professors. Lutz got with a couple other riders in BMW's management came up with a plan to move BMW motorcycles into the modern era. The R90S was the plan. BMW used high compression pistons, Del Orto carbs, and a free flow exhaust to coax an impressive 67 hp out of the 90S' 898 cc four-stroke twin. The power made the bike good for 200 kph but more importantly the engine had exceptional touring smoothness. Performance was so good a pair of R90Ss finished 1st and 2nd in the Superbike class at Daytona in 1976 with 90S rider Reg Pridmore winning the 1976 championship. BMW R90S design is credited to German Industrial designer Hans Furth. The R90s was the first of two iconic motorcycle designs credited to Furth, the second being the mold braking Suzuki Katana. Featuring low bars with a bikini fairing and 90S molded into the rear ducktail, the 90S bike looked the part of a caf¨¦ racer while riding like a world class sports bike. - Our R90S is part of our personal collection. - The model was only made in two colors. - Our's is the more popular Smoke Black with Silver highlighted with gold pinstripes. - It was thoroughly refurbished and is in excellent condition. - Mechanically it is also in excellent condition. These BMWs are rarely available and almost never seen in this condition. - They are readily recognized and appreciated by motorcycle aficionados. - This is a bike you will be glad you bought.

Locked Empty Your Float Bowls if Your Bike is Stored 21
Many of us have our bikes stored for the winter, one thing that I have found that helps my bikes start up after a slumber is to empty the float bowls. I find that is not as important with bikes that have fuel injection; my spin is that our airhead float bowls are vented to the atmosphere and the air circulation causes the gas to evaporate, which leaves a reside that clogs up parts, especially the small orifices. The Dells need a 17 mm wrench for the nut that holds the float bowl on :-) Be CAREFUL with that nut, replacements are hard to find, but currently I am not up to date for a source. I do know long ago a member of the the R90S Sport Owners Club had them made by a machine shop and sold these nuts to the members. Bring a small canister to this event to catch the gas :-) On my bikes that are fuel injected, I just put non-ethanol gas in them, if I can, keep the battery on a smart charger, and in the spring they are good to go, they start right up. I do more than just the above for storage, I am addressing emptying float bowls in this email. Good luck!! Locked Summer 1973 BMW Journal Added and Available to See
We've recently spoken about the BMW Journals that I've been collecting for years and had scanned. I passed them around several weeks ago and got mired in that tech debacle, so Doug Raymond rescued my effort and posted them all on the R9sWorldnet for everyone to see and use. One person who saw that effort is a person who I loaned several motorcycles through when he worked for BMW of North America, they used my bikes for press releases, etc. Anyway, long story, we've kept in contact over the years and he sent me a BMW Journal I did not have, the Summer 1973 issue that I did not have. I had a friend scan it for me, and sent it to Doug Raymond who has now posted that issue along with the others. Thanks again for your help Doug. and Enjoy the BMW Journal, Summer 1973 issue. And BTW the cover of that issue was purposely blurred when it was first produced so don't think it was a scanning error. Locked R.I.P.: Todd Schuster, Master Fabricator And Superbike Pioneer (Updated) - Roadracing World Magazine | Motorcycle Riding, Racing & Tech News 2
Anyone who attended our 40th Anniversary Celebration of the R90S back in 2014, had a chance to meet Todd Schuster, he was an interesting and entertaining fellow to say the least. I¡¯m glad to have spent some time with him in person as well as several hours on the phone, before and after the event. In case you didn¡¯t make the rally, below is his business card, this will give you some insight as to what kind of character we had as one of our guest. We lost a good one! RIP my friend. Locked R90S Serial Number 1 of US Production 9
I accidentally ran into R90S of US serial number one, in a warehouse in NY, I was trying to find a warehouse on the Hudson River in NY that restored PT boats from WWII. Walked in and there it was. A local friend now owns it. BUT US production started AFTER ROW (rest of world) production had started, so it is NOT the first R90S produced, it is the first one for US consumption. The US bikes had a different serial number sequence than ROW bikes. You can find lists of all these serial numbers, some in Ian Falloon's book "BMW R90S". Locked Todd Schuster 2
Todd Schuster I¡¯m so sorry to hear about the passing of our friend Todd Schuster. Udo Gietl, Tom Cutter have my deepest condolences. Todd Schuster was such a delightful guest for our R90S anniversary event in 2014, I really enjoyed our conversations. A few days after the event, when all the dust settled, Schuster called me to thank me and said he had a really good time and that we need hold these events each year. We all knew his health wasn¡¯t the best even back in 2014, I¡¯m just hoping he was able to have some enjoyable moments these past few years. May he rest in peace. Sorry I didn¡¯t know him back in those racing days, I¡¯m sure he was a real firecracker. Maybe this Fall, at the VBMMO gathering, here in eastern PA, we can gather around and talk about some of the good times back in the day¡.I think the guys would really like to hear some of the colorful stories regarding Schuster, Gietl and Cutter. Many good times I¡¯m sure. You are all invited to attend. It will be a vintage BMW event for members and non members of the Vintage BMW Motorcycle Owners. Sincerely, Todd Trumbore
