Moto Bins at least, used to have them. But they were unlined with nylon, as the originals were, from BMW.?

I’ve forgotten the history of curved throttle tubes, but seem to remember they were problematic. Can the learned explain?

Thanks

Mines been on since new, what problems?
Replaced throttle cables twice I think, that's all

My '75 S has the original curved DelOrto tubes on it. The bike had very low mileage when I got it, and I believe that the throttle cables were original factory.? I noticed that the plastic cable liner was longer by about 1.5" than the outer cable, allowing the liner to line the tube.

I did have a cable break where it curves within the pipe while on a road trip and had to repair it MacGyver style it to get home. I wasn't able to find a BMW replacement cables to replace the broken one, however I had a set of BMW cables modified to match the length of my unbroken cable. Aside from weakening the cable due to the bend, I heard that a problem with the curved tubes is that the cable can cut through it after time. I lube the cable at the tube before rides to protect against it.?

+ What Pat said, the steel cable would cut through the throttle tube over time, at the bend, whereas a straight tube with a cable going straight through it would not cut the tube.

There is an article on how to make your own cable for the curved tube DelOrto, in the Vintage BMW magazine Classic BMW Motorraeder, March 2021 (Vol 45 No 1). The magazine is available online at

?

It starts with .048” SS stock throttle cable and brass ferrules.

Was the curved tube a function of what’s in the parts bin or model year? My 76 has straight tubes, but I’m not aware if these were original to the bike. Just curious.

Four out of five R90Ss I own have curved?throttle tubes.
Details:
I own a '74, '75 and two '76s, they all have curved throttle?tubes and what I know of them tells me they are original.?

I also have an R90S I "restored" (it is beautiful but it has stainless parts everywhere and other parts added which suit my taste such as the chrome acorn nut on the right shock lower, holes in the fairing lower, calipers from a '76 and a smaller diameter brake master cylinder (for better braking), rear drive from an R75 with matching speedo (so it's quicker), custom bent mirror stalks but new mirrors, so they stay in place), new repro bags, and I am now trying to find a complete kicker assembly to add to it as I think the kickers are beautiful, etc.)
But I digress :-)
Back to curved throttle tubes: my resto has straight tubes and I know the Del's on it are from an R90S, just not sure of the year).

TMI but it's interesting :-)

I’d love to see an article about your restomod R90s in Vintage BMW! How about it?
