Subject: [R90SWORLDNET] QUESTION: R90S FOR SALE POST?

Last year, I purchased a ’76 R90S that I was hoping would be a running project for my boys and I so I could teach them how to perform timing, valve adjustments, fluid changes, cable adjustments, simple mechanics, the love of classic motorcycles, etc. As it turns out, one has joined the Navy while the other is now busy in college. Such are plans. Anyway, I have four other new bikes and I’d like to see this one go to a good home. Is it okay to post bikes “FOR SALE” through this forum? I was thinking to use Craigslist, the IBMWR, but not eBay.

Locked Re: 1975 R90/S Tank Roundels

Mac,

There were three different R90/S tank badges. One was the thin badge most commonly seen on the /6. The other two were enamel applied to a nickel base. The difference between them is the hight of the convex. The height of the convex, on the enameled badges still available through BMW and elsewhere, is too great to sit properly on my '75's tank.

?The badges on the ends are available through BMW. The center badge is from my ’75 R09/S. Please notice the relative heights of each badge.??

I second this technique. Works very well.

To debug a short circuit that blows fuses:

Using clip leads, attach a headlight bulb across the two tabs that hold
the fuse.
If there is a short circuit, the bulb will glow brightly, but nothing will
be
harmed. Then you can experiment with unplugging stuff until the short
goes away
(until the test bulb either goes out, or the intensity drops enough to
notice.

Locked How Does the EZ Clutch Work?

Hi Jerry, your question is spot on and very appropriate, much as "how the heck does counteering work?", another head scratcher.

The key to all this is the added pulley, it halves the required "pull" input at the clutch lever, but it adds twice the distance of cable necessary to be pulled at the clutch lever. The pull on the clutch arm behind the trans is the same of course.

And clutch?cables just last much longer with an EZ Clutch.

In the four wheel world often a winch is attached to a vehicle to retrieve a stuck vehicle. When the pulley ("snatch block" in the 4WD world) is also used, the effective pull by the winch is halved, saving the winch from overload, and doubling its effectiveness.

Here is a good video about this:

HTH, there will be a test later on :-)

More questions? Let us know. That was a good one!

Yes, the "Beeming the Road" ride is cancelled. Thank you Covid!!

We can't get information out in the magazine due to the lead time required to get the magazine out.

Here's the deal:
Due to lead times for our quarterly magazine, "Classic BMW Motorrader" written input must be submitted about 3 months prior to the magazine being mailed out, what with gathering stories, editor work, then the layout lady works on it, then we proofread it, printing takes time, and we use the post office's print mail rate because it is cheaper, but it is far slower.

SO you receive 3 month old information such as the ride is still on when it?has been cancelled. We did post it on our social media sites, FB, etc.

Due to some snafus, a new website, etc., this issue of the magazine was alarmingly and unacceptably late, but we will get much better and we know what things?to do do to make progress; the Board members, our website and information officer guru, etc., ?have been speaking about that a good bit recently.

Todd Trumbore, Hunter, our store manager and designer of great swag (more is being designed and will come) and myself will have breakfast this Fri AM. Not really to lalk business, since we have made so much progress, but for fun.

Progress? Glad you asked :-)

We almost have ALL our Club magazines scanned and ON our website, only a few are just now coming in the mail to be scanned, so give it a week or two and they all will be up. Access is via a nominal yearly cost to view all of them, and there is a HUGE amount of very good information in our magazines, they cover almost?50 years of magazines!
See

Then Magazines.
(Note the motorsport colors and the dual black pinstripes! Yes we are passionate!)

After the scanning is complete, we will catalog all the articles and apply an app that will allow a search so one can find "sidecar" or "trip to Alaska", or "rebuild an R51/3 carb", etc., amongst all the hundreds of magazines.

And
Much more is planned for our website, so stay tuned, there will be all kinds of information about vintage BMW motorcycles, readily searchable!!

It's a TON of work, but we are passionate, and we have a great team, they are stellar.

I know what you mean about just having to get out! Have fun?on your trip!!

Distinguished List Members,
I've enjoyed my 1974 R90S since 1996. It has been completely reliable throughout my stewardship and tolerant of my occasional neglect (as in not riding it for a few months). I have kept up on all routine maintenance and find that as many would agree, the tinkering and hands on maintenance is as enjoyable as riding it. It has about 56K miles on the clock. Recently after a short ride, I went to start the bike and found that there was no action at all when thumbing the starter. I also realized that although the power would come on when I turned the key (dash lights on, headlight works), the volt meter was reading "0". I suspected a blown fuse and confirmed that after opening the headlight bucket that the top 8 amp fuse was blown. I replaced the fuse and turned on the key which immediately blew the new fuse. I realized I was now dealing with a dead short. A quick review of the wiring diagram shows that the top fuse powers the flasher, ignition switch, brake light switches (front and back), volt meter and starter relay (am I missing anything?). Some initial trouble shooting showed that the right blinker wire had continuity to ground (this was easy to check and I had to start somewhere). When I disconnected that wire on the terminal block, I confirmed that that wire was not shorted (continuity was good through that wire but no longer to ground). I also decided to replace the starter relay just because it was easy and so many of the top fuse circuits run through that device. I plan on isolating the brake switches to remove them from the equation next.
My question to the group is does anyone have any advice or experience that can shorten or focus my troubleshooting plan? Is there a common top fuse failure that you can share? Something that I should be focusing on? Should I treat myself to a re-wire given that the harness and all connections are 46 years old and I want confident reliability? What about those diodes on the back side of the terminal block? Could that be a likely point of failure?
I appreciate the feedback.
Thanks,
Hans Kaufmann
