Locked Re: Replacement Rear Shocks

I have bought a pair of Ikon shocks and two polished iron shrouds specially made for the Ikons, on Motobins website. They look like the stock ones, but they works really better...
Ciao!

Locked Replacement Rear Shocks

Stock 75 R90S SS. Looks like I am going to need a pair of shocks. Friends have suggested YSS, Hagon, Ikon. This is a nice daily rider, close but not a show bike. Would like good performance and possibly the option to install the stock shock cover to present the illusion of stock. I find multiple options in those brands online.? Wanting some specific suggestions/model numbers based on experience. THANKS!!!!!!?

Locked Re: Petcock replacement

The major thing to know is that the tightening nut works on both the tank threads and the petcock threads, so one must start the process such that you end up with a fairly even number of threads used on the tank spigot and petcock. If you start close to the point of grabbing threads from both, that usually works out OK.
If the threads are encrusted, clean them carefully. I advise you NOT try to clean up the bottom end of the spigot...unless very little, and very carefully...it must be left square to the petcock mating surface!!! I usually just wipe the area with a good solvent....but, I've seen some problem tank spigots.
I generally don't use plumber's tape (that super thin Teflon stuff), nor, any other sealant.

Are there any quirks in regard to removing and reinstalling a fuel petcock on a ¡¯75 S that I should know about? Should threads be addressed? i.e. plumbers tape, etc.

Locked 1974 Repro Handlebar Switches Now Available

Replacement /5 handlebar switches are now available, which means if you own a '74 R90S, R90/6, etc., your bike has the?/5 switches and you will want to know the following since the '74 bikes have different wiring, they have a 5 position ignition switch versus '75 on 3 position ignition switches, etc.

This from Vech?@ Bench Mark?Works

I was the one that first contacted the manufacturer, and sent samples of the original switches,? and I insisted that the manufacturer modify them with screw terminals on the back of the switch (rather than hard soldered harnesses) so the harnesses can be replaced as they fall apart in the sun.?

This was my idea, but I do not have an exclusive contract, so others now offer the switches.

However, the people I contacted to make the switches, insisted on providing harnesses with each switch.
There is a problem with that. I argued against it, but they would not listen.?

The problem is,? 1974 only /6 uses a?different harness and has flag terminals on the end that goes in the H/L bucket.
The /5 version had simple tinned ends on the wires, to connect with the terminal board and flasher socket.

Plus, the LHS /6 has extra wires for the clutch interlock feature that the /5 version does not.
And, the 1974 only R90s had an identical harness,?but of different length.

That is why I sell the same switches, without harnesses, and I offer the harnesses separate.?

The Harnesses for the /5 are:

61 31 1 351 219H--$35.50--RHS? indicator switch harness /5?
61 31 1 351 220H--$35.50--LHS indicator switch harness /5?

But the harnesses for the 1974 /6 bikes are:
61 31 1 357 521H--$35.00--RHS indicator switch harness /6 1974 only
61 31 1 357 521HS--$35.00--RHS indicator switch harness R90S 1974 only
61 31 1 357 523H--$35.00--LHS switch harness? /6? 1974 only
61 31 1 357 523HS--$35.00--LHS switch harness? R90S? 1974 only

And the original headlight bucket grommet that was?originally made up on the harness of /6 switches, was not removable (due to the combination of flag terminals? and the fact that the wires were hard soldered into the original switches). ??that grommet was not available separately,?back in the day. ??I have a substitute that fits and works.? And it is possible to install it because the end of the harness at the switch is not hard soldered to the switch.

61 31 1 357 521G--$1.00--Grommet for /6 bucket 1974 harness?

Based on on Ian's book the VIN makes it an 06/74 build (US), which is the second to last month of US bikes.?My question is could this be legit, or did all the 74s have the white rings.

The documentation for the bike only goes back to 2005 so I can't confirm the progression of mileage prior to that.

Also, I was told the bikini fairing was replaced at some point. Again, I can't tell from the pictures if it's the 74 type with the mystery holes or a newer one, but I'll check today when I see it in person.?

Locked Now For The Truth: New Reproduction BMW /5 Handlebar Switches Now Available.

Would someone please pass Vech's information, below to the /5 list so they know the?true story and don't order the wrong parts?

If you want the correct repro handlebar switches for your bike, see Vech's complete statement below.
***
How about NOT posting purposely misleading and incorrect information to the airhead list?

The most made-up/implied portion of the story from yesterday is as follows; the email from yesterday had additional incomplete information that was posted above this statement:?
"These /5 switches are now available from The Beemer Shop and it's many dealers including Motorrad Elektrik, Euro Moto Electrics, Bob¡¯s BMW plus others. The Beemer Shop welcomes dealer inquiries."

The above is BS, many others sell these parts, The Beemer Shop does not control the supply of these parts as is explicitly implied by the sender. IMO this reflects badly on Ted's shop and he does not?deserve?that.

Following is the true, complete story from Vech at Bench Mark Works, read it if you have the models Vech references or you could buy the wrong parts for your bike and who needs to go through that?

_._,_._,_

?

Somewhere in my messy garage is a box of various tools, mostly homemade, for working on BMW windshields.? When I eventually find the box, I will post photos of each tool, and how it is used.
Meanwhile, in my website tools article, I snipped this out for those interested in what I used for the hollow rivets for the RT, etc. ??The cost is zero¡.it assumes you own a common pop-rivet gun.?? I made several of these in various lengths, etc., for various similar purposes.
Here's the text, followed by a photo.
Snowbum

9.?? This is a tool that is very simple, solves a problem, but you may never need to use it. Make this tool if and when you need it. ZERO cost. On the FAIRED models, BMW uses a tubular (hollow) rivet, to fasten a black plastic trim piece (that may contain a clock & voltmeter) to the fairing.?? You need a tool to replace rivets or tighten them, for such as fairing repairs & installations, loose dash pieces that can cause difficult to find noises, installation of Parabellum windshields that use an additional black plastic cover piece that fastens to two centered BMW rivets, etc.? The BMW hollow rivets need to be moderately tightly fastened, but not overly.? The problem is how to tighten them; without spending $$$ for a special pliers tool.

The secret is very simple!?? You obtain a drywall screw.? The proper size is just a wee bit too large in the drywall screws threads diameter.? Carefully grind (do not overheat the screw which is very tough unless overheated) the threaded area as in the photo, so that the threaded area will just smoothly enter the 'chuck' of a common pop-rivet installer hand lever tool, using the 3/16" hole diameter chuck. Be sure that you grind the screw threads over the full length, as the screw must fit the rivet so the screw HEAD will be able to push into the rivet! ? To use, insert the screw from underneath via fingers or forceps, use the pop-rivet tool on the outside.? The reason to not use over a 1-1/2" screw is so it is easier to insert from underneath.?? IF the outside of the rivet does not flatten properly (you want the ends cup-shaped), reverse the screw for the final moderate tightening.?? Do all the rivets, there are eight of them.

HINT:?? If installing a Parabellum windscreen, BEFORE installing the rivets, sure the black plastic cover piece from Parabellum does NOT interfere with the top of the gauges, if it does, sand or file or grind it a bit, otherwise it will make squeaking noises while riding, and wear the top of the gauge bezels.
