Re: Fw: advanced options being tried

Hi Paul,

Looks like feed events are available for your selected feeds and also other people seem to be seeing those events.

My recommendation would be to try and reproduce the problem on another computer as well, but generally I don't suspect a problem related to OccultWatcher software bug (but cannot rules this out completely). May be it is a problem with an antivirus software or other environmental issues with your computer.

As per my previous email without more debug info I would not be able to tell more. Here is how to obtain the additional info:

- Please provide DebugView log files of your feed synchronisation process () for one feed for which you are missing events
- Also provide DebugView logs when EventFilters trace flag set to true (). You can set the flag as described there and just do one single test from Feed Sync to completed OW analysis and OW showing no events.

If you send me the logs I will look at them and try to provide further advice.

If you end up identifying the root cause of the issue and/or manage resolve it, please let us know what the issue was and what you did to fix it.

Good luck!

Hristo.

I added the feed availability info on OWC's home page.

You may need to "Shift + Refresh" to see it. Here is how it looks like right now:

Fw: advanced options being tried

Hi Paul,

> I really do not know what else to try to get OW to update past Jan 6

If you tell us which are the feeds you have subscribed to, the community may be able to help you identify if others are seeing the same issue or not.

If more people are seeing this issue with the same feeds, let's check with the feed maintainers that they have provided events past 6 Jan.

If this is the case, let me know which feed(s) and I will look into it.

If other people do see events past 6 Jan but you don't then please provide DebugView log files of your feed synchronisation process () and also anorther one with the EventFilters trace flag set to true () and I will look at it when I find time.

Remeber OW is a free software and the best way to get support is by sending emails to the community ([email protected]) and asking for help here.

Marry Christmas and Happy New 2022.

Hristo.

Dear Eberhard,

I guess the one event on Feb 26 is a bug in the list. The complete list is set until Feb 15.

Re: I think I'm not doing something correctly, or, I need a new feature.

Thanks Hristo!??

Both of your suggestions work just fine. I'm not sure how I missed the "preferred sites" option, I guess I'm busy closing the nag screen and hitting Satellite view that I have ignored everything else. The pins are perfect!

Intermediate screen. I never though to "try" and change the "site name", so thanks for pointing that out. It works as expected now.

Regards,

Vince

Re: I think I'm not doing something correctly, or, I need a new feature.

Hi Vince,

When you add your event to MyEvents you can choose the name of the 'site' on the intermediate screen. There are currently no smarts to have the default value of the site infered by the mobile site you selected so this needs to be changed manually. If I didn't understand the problem, please provide screenshots.

Omn the second question. If you choose 'Show online map with stations' there will be a button at the top labels 'Preferred Sites'. This is a 'Toggle' button to show/hide those sites. It this what you were looking for?

As OW Desktop's GoogleMap will be decomissioned when Google stops support for .NET Windows Forms (Aug 2022), the preferred mobile locations functionality will be lost. I will need to rebuild the GoogleMap on OWC but the prefered mobile locations will not be on the top of the list of things to add support for, it may take a while before this functionality is restored.

Let me know if I missed anything.

Hristo.

My use case....

I find an event in OW I want to observe. If the path is over my "home", I will just observer from there, otherwise I will use the map function to see if the path goes over any of the "mobile sites" I have saved (I have over 20 local area sites). If I find a mobile site I want to use, I then go back to the OW event summary, right click on the event, select "add to My Events" and pick the mobile site from my list of pre-saved sites. Ok, probably nothing odd about that.

If I select an event (single click it), the path map at the bottom of the screen is updated with my new location. If I hover over it, it always indicates my home location. I would like it to display the name of the mobile site. This way, if I revisit my list, I don't have to open the map and find my location (which by the way, will still indicate my home location if I hover over it).

If it is a matter of privacy, then the software doesn't have to show MY location the same as it does for others. All my personal site information is available to OW, so when I am looking at MY data, I would love to see as much info of my own as possible. If i hover over someone else's site, sure, only tell me what they want me to know.?

Which brings me to the second question.? I thought I read somewhere that if i set my sites as "preferred mobile sites", those sites would show up on a map (?). well, if I double click an event, a map is loaded, but there isn't any indication of the locations of my mobile sites. So, on what map can they be seen, if what I read is true. Having my mobile sites available on the map would make is a lot easier to identify if any of them are candidates for a specific event.

I guess one possible response is, wait for the cloud version. LOL

Ok, that's all I have for today, I'll go away now.

I'll include the OccultWatcher group in my reply as well for everyones benefit.

Stopping old feeds for OW 4.7 and an update about IOTA and Personal events

Hi All,

As you all know with the release of OW 5.0 most predictions started coming from OWC. Some of the feeds however continued to post the predictions the old way as well so users with OW 4.7 who were slow to migrate could still get them. Initial announcement was that this double posting would continue for about 2 months.

After almost 6 months now the old way of posting predictions will finally cease and users with OW 4.7 (if anyone) will have to migrate to 5.0 to continue receiving events. May be some of the feed maintainers have stopped the double-posting already but this is just a reminder for everyone that OW 4.7 will be no longer supported.

There is also a work on the way to bring Personals predictions (posted the same way as before) to OWC and I hope to release the OW Desktop update for this soon. The advantage is that those personal predictions will get the standard OWC treatment including prediction updates when orbit is updated and an OWC page for the events.

You may have also noticed that OWC now also shows IOTA Occultation predictions, while OW still gets the events from Steve Preston's web site. This has been done as a transitional phase before fully moving IOTA events to OWC, which is still probably a few months away.

Some of the detalis of the IOTA events move to OWC are still to be decicded but Steve Preston will stop posting the data he does at the moment at , including Guide star charts, Occult's plots, pre-points lists and others. It is liekly that the site will get the events from OWC and still show them but with smaller amount of detail and links back to OWC which will be the central resource of information about the IOTA events.

If anyone has concerns about the above and about only relying on the information in OW and OWC for their planning, now is a good time to speak up so we can try to identify and address any potential final gaps and issues.

Regards,
Hristo Pavlov.

On Sunday, May 23, 2021, 04:02:08 PM GMT+10, Hristo Pavlov <hristo_dpavlov@...> wrote:

Hi All,

Today I have released the new version of Occult Watcher which is a major update in regards to how feed events make it into OW and how they are managed by the Feed Maintainers. There is no change to the UI and user experience of how these events are managed by the observers in OW.

One difference is that the online link to the events (new or updated) will point to a web page on the OccultWatcher Cloud system -

Within the next few months I expect to start making small updates to OW user experience to take better advantage of the new OWC event tagging system, with something likely coming up next week - stay tuned!

At the moment Feed Maintainers are (and have been for the past 2 months) keeping up to date two different locations of their feed events. One for the current (now old) version of OW 4.7 and the other one of the new version 5.0.

There is a plan that they will stop posting events to the old location in about 2 months from now which gives you 2 months to upgrade to OW 5.0. If you haven't updated to OW 5.0 by then, you will not be receiving any new events in OW 4.7 once they stop posting events the old way. OW 5.0 events are also automatically updated by OWC and will be more recent than OW 4,7 events. All these are great reasons to upgrade to v5.0 very soon.

After you have updated OccultWatcher please do the following:

- Stop OW and then restart it. This is a workaround for an issue where wrong feed settings would have been loaded if you are logged in to windows with a non-admin account and you had to type admin password to complete the upgrade process. I will release a fix for this issue in the near future but for now a manual shut down and a restart of OW with your usual Windows account is required.

- Make sure to press the Synchronise button to get the latest events from OWC. Because OWC automatically monitors for orbit updates and updates predictions, doing this will get you the latest predictions for recently updated orbits. If you are subscribed to the CometOcc feed this will make a huge difference as the OWC comet predictions will be using Horizon's orbits, while OW 4.7 Comet events will be using the less accurate MPC orbits.

You will also notice that (apart from IOTA Occultations, which is still using the old style of fetching) all new feeds will synchronise much faster than before. This is only one of the improvements of moving the feeds to OWC.

OW 5.0 has been beta tested for about 2 months but it is likely that small issues have been missed. If you see anything which doesn't seem right, please report it directly to me or to the OccultWatcher group.io group. Things to watch for are predictions that don't seem updated as well as wrong data being shown for a prediction in OW or the OWC link when you follow the web page for the event.

I would like to thank all Feed Maintainers and all people who dedicated time to contribute to the OWC project and to help reaching this significant milestone!

Best Regards,
Hristo Pavlov
