Re: OW Mobile - Request for feature

Hi Vince,

Is this iOS and Andrdoid app?

Can you provide a screenshot demonstrating the problem (On the majority of Android devices, you can press the volume down button and the power button together to take a screenshot.) and a specific event so I can look at it.

When you open an event, for example the below "Pavlov H Home (AU)", would be the actual name of the station you have submitted which should be different for your different locations.

Inline image

Are you referring to this screen or a different screen? The list of events does not show the site names at the moment.

Hristo.

Re: still another OW issue

Paul has adviced me that the missing event has reappeared after increasing the travel distance filter.

I have not seen something like this exactly. There is logic in OW about handling duplicated events and sometimes when you add a station to one event, then click on the second (duplicated) one it will automatically move to My Events as well. But I have not seen stations disappearing and having to be re-added.

I can see your station on the server.

Has anyone seen the problem that Paul is reporting?

Re: my report disappeared from OW

Hi Paul, everyone,

I assume the event is (377)Campania occulting UCAC4491001574-20211025:

where you reported a 10.3 sec occultation. I see your report on the server as well as it is displayed above.

Has anyone seen their reports disappearing from their OW?

Currently there is an issue that some multple predictions of the same event (one agains a Gaia star) are not correctly recognized as the same event and stations of other people may not show up on the event you may have signed up, but ths particular event is not affected.

Has anyone seen anything wrong with the reporting functionality as reported by Paul?

Re: Cartes du Ciel add-in for OW

Hi Carlos,

I copied Grzegorz, the author of the add-in, in case he can provide some gudance.

It looks like Cartes du Ciel has done something really nasty here denying to start if you run it as an admin. While this is really not recomended for security reasons only, I find this a little extreme. Don't know if there is a setting in Cartes du Ciel to disable this behaviour.

On the other hand you can actually run OW as a non-admin account (which will then start Cartes du Ciel as a non-admin) but this means logging into Windows as a non-admin account. I would recommend this to all Windows users but this could be a very big change to for many. You should still consider doing that but I have no other suggestions how to resolve this.

To match the 'extreme' of Cartes du Ciel itself, may be I can recommend that you complain to 'Cartes du Ciel' support and stop using it, especially if you have paid money for it - ask for your money back until they fix this redicolous coercion.

C2A Occultation Map Interface (modification)

I find the C2A Occultation Map feature (right click on an event) very useful.

Once it is generated by C2A, I print out the map for field reference.
If possible, I would like to see the RA/Dec of the target star included in the notes that appear on the lower edge of the printout.
This would save me time and would be more accurate since I wouldn't have to hand write it each time.

This info is passed to C2A when launched from OW, so adding the coordinates of the target star should be feasable.

I searched the menus of C2A but couldn't find a setting that would include the coordinates on a printout. If someone knows how to include the RA/Dec, please let me know.

Vince

Re: Request for new feature... and...

Hi V,

Thanks for your commnts.

Changing font size in the details won't work, not easily, as it will scramble everytying. This is due to bad design on my part 14 years ago. So no point of allowing to change the font.

Your best option would be to change the Scale of your display to something bigger (125%, 150%, 175%). Make sure you change this from the main page of Display Settings on Windows 10 (called "Change the size of text, apps and other items") and not from the advanced settings (called "Enter a custom scaling size between 100% - 500% (not recommended)")

I updated the link and the title of the Yahoo group to point here. I will release this with the next update that also has some other more substantial changes.

The "help" drop down has a entry to a user group on Yahoo. That link is dead, it dumps you to the main Yahoo page. How about changing the link to go to "this" group's page.

Fixed Comet Feed links [OW Action Required!]

Hi all,

There was a problem where the recently uploaded comet event in the CometOcc feed were generated with a bad id, due to a recent change of the coment designation format used by MPC. As a result the events in OW and also listed on OWC could not be reached on their event page on OWC.

This has been now fixed for existing events starting from tomorrow and the issue should not happen for the future events uploaded to CometOcc.

To get the fix in OW, if you are using the Comet Occultation feed, you will need to:

- Go to Configuration -> Prediction Feeds -> Comet Occultation (Global) -> [right click] -> Purge database
- Let OW finish restarting
- Go to Configuration -> Prediction Feeds -> Comet Occultation (Global) -> [right click] -> Synchronise

If any MyEvents or stations are lost in the above process you will need to re-add them. Old events will not be updated.

Thanks to Vince Sempronio for poiting out this issue.

Cheers,
Hristo.

Re: OW Cuts off object name.

The cut off is due to the very old design of OccultWatcher desktop client, which was initially intended for asteroids only and then comets were added later.

The? 'Comet Ocultation' predictions are uploaded to OWC so if you follow the "View details on the web" link from below, this will attempt to open up the OWC page which will contain all the information you are asking for.

However because of a change of comet designation format for named comets by MPC this is currently not working as OWC cannot resolve the comet.

You can find out which is the comet if you go to: and then in the Future Events sections select the date and identify the event by time/star etc.

Unfortunately the links on this page will also not work at the moment for the same reason.

I will try to resolve this problem before Carlos uploads the next set of comet predictions.

Hristo.

The names of the comets are truncated, so I have no idea what comet they really are. It is difficult to research them further, in this case.
If you look at the details of an event (right click and "additional event details"), that doesn't help either because the object name is truncated there as well.

so, is there anywhere to go to find out what the full name is of an object? As i stated before, asteroids aren't an issue since their official number is listed first and therefore easy to find online.

that was all...

Re: personal feed file not working

Hi Vince,

I am with you.

My approach is that these events are just there and not picked up by anyone else.
I expect the security aspect is the same as all other predictions.
And so not really requiring any further consideration.
Happy with other feed's security, so why worry about "Personal".

Perhaps a better solution is to have an additional entry in the "Show site to Others" drop down menu. The entry would be "Complete Privacy", which means the icon would not appear on any map so nobody would know they were observing it. The event could still be added to their "My Events" as a reminder, but when added, it wouldn't be pushed to any station notifications.?

My assumption was that the personal predictions imported from Occult should look and behave like any other "feed" prediction, they are just events that weren't available elsewhere.

Perhaps we can hear from others who do personal predictions to see how they use them.?
