Hello Tony,
??? Yesterday evening I started to revive my Night Eagle Astro camera, but spent a lot of time finding which plug and polarity were needed for the power supply. This isn't described in the tiny "manual" accompanying the camera, or in your very good article, see the URL below.
For those who still have the camera the connection is a 5.5/2.1mm power plug, centre positive (Digikey P
N CP3-002AH-ND). I've soldered it to a cut cable with USB type A plug. Especially in older cables the conductor colours aren't alway standardised. The red one is usually positive, I've seen black, blue or green as earth. Check with a voltmeter before you solder. http s://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/38542/identifying-usb-wires gives you more information
I can than use the camera in the field with a? 20 amp/hour USB power pack.
The other connectors are RCA/Cinch
Best wishes, Jerry

Re: "Ghost event" in new 5.0 version of OW

Hi Ted,

You have a submitted station for (33668)1999JO97 occulting UCAC4385116324 on 25 May. This is a personal prediction by Tony George.

If? you cannot see this event in MyEvents, do you see any other personal predictions in your MyEvents? Can you submit stations to new events, making them move to your MyEvents?

Has anyone else noticed a similar issue?

Hristo.

OW 5.0 - Comet Duplicates & how to fix them

Hi All,

It appears that if you had events from the Comet feed before you upgraded to OW 5.0, then after the upgrade many of the comet events would have been duplicated. Thanks for V for reporting this issue.

This appears to be because OW was unable to match the old comet events to the new events. This doesn't seem to be a problem with the asteroidal events.

In order to resolve the problem (remove the duplicates) if you have it, please do the following:

- Go to Configuration -> Prediction feeds
- Select the 'Comet Occultations (Global)' feed, right click and choose "Purge database"
- OW will restart
- After the restart press the "Synchronise now" button to get the Comet predictions again.

Cheers,
Hristo.

Re: Incoming Release of OccultWatcher 5.0

Hi V,

As per my previous email, I am able to reproduce the problem. Looks like events from the 4.7 Comet feed were not matched correctly by OW to the new events from the OWC comet feed and this has caused the duplication. Thanks again for reporting this.

I'll send a separate email explaining how to get rid of the duplicates.

Hristo.

In regards to the Comet duplicates - I can reproduce that, too. I also see some small differences between the duplications. So need to investigate this further and apply a fix either on the server or with an OW patch release. Many thanks for reporting this issue!

Hi All,

You may have noticed that I released an update to OWC where now the event search has been extended to also search for events involving comets. This is the visible change related to the migration of the Comets feed to OWC.

With that now completed and with OWC and OW 5.0 having operated for many weeks I feel that it is time to push the public release of OW 5.0

If you think that there are still issues that need to be solved before the release please speak up. If I don't hear anything from you I will release OW 5.0 over the weekend.

Some other important topics related to this release:

- As OW 5.0 will be fetching a number of feeds from OWC while OW 4.x would be using the old style web sites, I suggest that to minimize the work of feed maintainers we announce a 2 month migration period and stop the release of data to the old feeds after that. This should give enough time for people to migrate. If I don't hear any discussion on this topic I will also make this announcement with the release of OW 5.0

- There are likely still some minor issues to be discovered but releasing a fix for them would be a small-risk operation for OW 5.0 and it happens without user impact for OWC. Therefore unless something bigger is reported I don't want to hold the release of OW 5.0 for minor issues. If bigger issues are discovered post release I will move quickly to resolve them.

- As the first two major phases of OWC will be complete () I would like to focus on the next features. For this I would like to ask you to please vote for say 1 or 2 features if you have preferences. I may also update the phases page and make it possible for people to actually vote on the page by clicking a button, to make the process easier. I will try to get this released over the weekend, too.

Let me know if you have any other comments / feedback.

?

Hi All,

?

Today I have released the new version of Occult Watcher which is a major update in regards to how feed events make it into OW and how they are managed by the Feed Maintainers. There is no change to the UI and user experience of how these events are managed by the observers in OW.

?

One difference is that the online link to the events (new or updated) will point to a web page on the OccultWatcher Cloud system -

?

Within the next few months I expect to start making small updates to OW user experience to take better advantage of the new OWC event tagging system, with something likely coming up next week - stay tuned!

?

At the moment Feed Maintainers are (and have been for the past 2 months) keeping up to date two different locations of their feed events. One for the current (now old) version of OW 4.7 and the other one of the new version 5.0.

?

There is a plan that they will stop posting events to the old location in about 2 months from now which gives you 2 months to upgrade to OW 5.0. If you haven't updated to OW 5.0 by then, you will not be receiving any new events in OW 4.7 once they stop posting events the old way. OW 5.0 events are also automatically updated by OWC and will be more recent than OW 4,7 events. All these are great reasons to upgrade to v5.0 very soon.

?

?

After you have updated OccultWatcher please do the following:

?

- Stop OW and then restart it. This is a workaround for an issue where wrong feed settings would have been loaded if you are logged in to windows with a non-admin account and you had to type admin password to complete the upgrade process. I will release a fix for this issue in the near future but for now a manual shut down and a restart of OW with your usual Windows account is required.

?

- Make sure to press the Synchronise button to get the latest events from OWC. Because OWC automatically monitors for orbit updates and updates predictions, doing this will get you the latest predictions for recently updated orbits. If you are subscribed to the CometOcc feed this will make a huge difference as the OWC comet predictions will be using Horizon's orbits, while OW 4.7 Comet events will be using the less accurate MPC orbits.

?

You will also notice that (apart from IOTA Occultations, which is still using the old style of fetching) all new feeds will synchronise much faster than before. This is only one of the improvements of moving the feeds to OWC.

?

OW 5.0 has been beta tested for about 2 months but it is likely that small issues have been missed. If you see anything which doesn't seem right, please report it directly to me or to the OccultWatcher group.io group. Things to watch for are predictions that don't seem updated as well as wrong data being shown for a prediction in OW or the OWC link when you follow the web page for the event.

?

?

I would like to thank all Feed Maintainers and all people who dedicated time to contribute to the OWC project and to help reaching this significant milestone!

Re: Incoming Release of OccultWatcher 5.0

Hi Tony,

There will be no UI difference between 4.7 and 5.0. The only difference is that most feeds will be fetched differently and event detail pages will point to OWC.

With the following updates of OW v5 I expect to start making UI changes but they will be additions and will work on an opt-in basis.

I *try* to keep everything backwards compatible but I will likely fail to do so in some occasions. OW 5.0 is fully backwards compatible as long as the user interaction is concerned.

Hristo.

Re: [OWCloud] Incoming Release of OccultWatcher 5.0

I renamed the field to "Closest Approach" based on this term also being used in the Occelmnt file documentation, where this time ultimately comes from.

Do you think that this name is better and do you have other suggestions? I find "Ground Time" and "Track Time" less clear and "Time Range" is not possible as I cannot show a range in this place.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for reporting all this.

- Rank is indeed wrong or more correctly it was the rank of the original prediction before the event was tagged and a better prediction was uploaded/computed. However because of the nature of the search this form does, the Rank is actually correct but I fully understand that it is not what you expected to see. This kind of comes back to the usefulness of this particular form and I'll need to improve it. I don't think that this will happen before the release of OW 5.0 and I also don't think this issue is serious enough to stop the release of OW 5.0. Would you disagree with that statement?

- Event Time - as per my other reply pages are not related to an observer's location and I am trying to make them show minimum text/data. I personally don't see an issue with the title 'Event Time' and the time that is displayed as this could possibly only mean one thing - what the value actually is. I am open for suggestions but at this point I don't think that this needs changing.

There is also as separate problem with those search forms as a whole. I will need to build new forms better targeted to observers. Current forms are more for people looking at whether OWC is working correctly and require knowledge of how they work so showing 'inconvenient' event Date Time is better than showing no time at all, when showing a user specific time is not an option. Also on this form showing the full range is also not an option here, either, unless I modify what the form does or how fast it works.

- I agree that showing Magnitude before Mag Drop is more 'natural' so I will do as you suggest with the next update of OWC, which typically happens silently i.e. I just update it without telling anyone, unless there is something cool to tell you about :)

Thanks again!
Hristo.

Subject: [OccultWatcher] Incoming Release of OccultWatcher 5.0

?

Hi All,

?

You may have noticed that I released an update to OWC where now the event search has been extended to also search for events involving comets. This is the visible change related to the migration of the Comets feed to OWC.

?

With that now completed and with OWC and OW 5.0 having operated for many weeks I feel that it is time to push the public release of OW 5.0

?

If you think that there are still issues that need to be solved before the release please speak up. If I don't hear anything from you I will release OW 5.0 over the weekend.

?

Some other important topics related to this release:

?

- As OW 5.0 will be fetching a number of feeds from OWC while OW 4.x would be using the old style web sites, I suggest that to minimize the work of feed maintainers we announce a 2 month migration period and stop the release of data to the old feeds after that. This should give enough time for people to migrate. If I don't hear any discussion on this topic I will also make this announcement with the release of OW 5.0

?

- There are likely still some minor issues to be discovered but releasing a fix for them would be a small-risk operation for OW 5.0 and it happens without user impact for OWC. Therefore unless something bigger is reported I don't want to hold the release of OW 5.0 for minor issues. If bigger issues are discovered post release I will move quickly to resolve them.

?

- As the first two major phases of OWC will be complete () I would like to focus on the next features. For this I would like to ask you to please vote for say 1 or 2 features if you have preferences. I may also update the phases page and make it possible for people to actually vote on the page by clicking a button, to make the process easier. I will try to get this released over the weekend, too.

?

Let me know if you have any other comments / feedback.

?

Cheers,

Hristo.

It appears that Aladin now correctly opens a chart for this star. Looks like there has been an issue on their end.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for submitting your notes about this page.

- 13.5 is indeed the combined magnitude as reported by the Occelmnt file i.e. there is no error in the title. This is computed from the V magnitude of the star (13.59) and the magnitude of the asteroid (17.01)

- The magnitude listed as 12.45 for the star is the Red magnitude from the Occelmnt file. Because our cameras are more sensitive in red in this instance I thought that preferring to show the R magnitude over the V magnitude (which is 13.6) would be more useful. I could update the title to read (R=12.45m) however in this instance I think I should change the magnitude to be the V magnitude (13.6 as you correctly pointed out) so it is consistent with the Combined magnitude which is displayed next to it and is based on the V magnitude.

- Event Date & Time - The general pages of OWC are not related to a specific site on the Earth so this time has a meaning of the time of the closest approach. You are correct that the full interval is from 17:50 to 18:16 UT and this is displayed to the bottom right under the Earth plot. I will try to think of a better title for the time. While I like 'Date & Time of Closest Approach' I think this is probably too long and the naming should be consistent across this page and the event search results page. Do you have a suggestion for a different title or a different 'fix' for this 'issue'?

- Star charts not going to the actual star - this is unfortunately true. Appears that Aladin was unable to locate the star (UCAC4 0323-126197) and instead of showing an error message, it decided to go to coordinates (0, 0). I will see if I can do something about this on my end. I have recorded this as an OWC bug, which I will look at a later time:

Hi Hristo,

This form need fixing too.? See…

Also the star charts are not going to the target star.? They are centered on 0 RA and 0 Dec.
