South Carolina
My dad grew up in Marlboro County, South Carolina, first in Bennetsville, the county seat, and later in McColl. My search on Railpictures for a South Carolina photo included McColl as a term and I was pleased to see that the Pee Dee River RR has old Geeps in a distinctive paint scheme. As a boy, my dad might have seen steam engines on this stretch of track, he mentioned watching the local freight switching in McColl and one uncle said he remembered the Silver Meteor detouring through town one day. Doug Kroll took today's photo. Mike Tisdale |

Rhode Island
The Penn Central deserves a little love in our survey of railroads by state and Tom Nelligan's photo of a pair of ex-New Haven units on a short freight at Warwick, Rhode Island will be or example of railroading in America's smallest state. Eureka County, Nevada, where we camp at Palisade, is larger in area that Rhode Island and and Delaware put together...and has less than 1 person per 2 square miles. Rhode Island is small but has more people than some other states. Mike Tisdale |

Re: North Dakota
Beebe mentioned the idea of the train as the sole object of interest in the photo in his first book, High Iron, reflecting the view of railroad roster shot and action shot photographers of the 1930s.?? By the time Highball came out in 1945, he and Clegg, whom he met after High Iron was published, were doing more to put the trains they photographed in context and Mixed Train Daily was as much about the places the trains ran as the trains themselves.?? I'm glad you like the Mike Danneman photo I selected to represent North Dakota as it really said a lot to me about the train in its surroundings.?? Mike Tisdale

Neill, ? I agree.? The landscape adds so much ¡°value¡± to the photo.? Every so often I see the suggestion that you should ¡°isolate¡± the subject train from its surroundings.? I am a firm believer that trains live in a landscape, whether that be urban, industrial or, in this case, the badlands. Every now and then an image comes along that illustrates this perfectly/ Well done. |
