MZ 1403 on a northbound/westbound freight and MZ 1404 on a southbound/eastbound Intercity train in Vejle, Denmark. 18 Aug 1984 The two units are model MZ I with a turbocharged EMD 16-645 engine, making them similar to a North American SD40 internally In August and September 1984, i was on a deployment to Karup,, Denmark with the US Air National Guard. We had more people than we needed and everyone had a lot of time off. I made a point of riding the private railways of Jutland as well as the "Veteran Railways', preserved lines. The Veteranbanen Bryrup-Vrads goes between its namesake towns through a hilly area with woods and a lake. I rode DSB trains to Vejle, from where I took a bus to Bryrup. I had a bit of a layover, so I got a couple of trains trackside while I waited.

Feather River Friday, 2013
9 June 2013, Serpentine Canyon, eastbound/northbound BNSF train with 3 GE warbonnets.
Serpentine Canyon is part of the Feather River Canyon and is so named because of the serpentine rock in this area. Little vegetation grows in serpentine, making the region good for photography.
From the shadows the radiators are casting, it is early afternoon

8 June 2013, Keddie, California, northbound BNSF. I've been wanting to get a photo here since I saw Richard Steinheimer's shot of WP F-units leading a Highline train in "Western Trains" and Ted Benson's photo of a Highline local dropping back to Keddie in "Echoes Down the Canyon". The locomotives and railroads have changed by the light, bridge and scenery remain the same.
Keddie is where the ex-WP line going north to Bieber and Oregon splits from the line going east to Portola and points east. UP took over the WP and then BNSF got the line going north from Keddie when UP took over the SP to provide more competition in the west coast north-south corridor

Amador Wednesday, 1993 or 94
Martell, California. Amador Central #9 heading uphill. I'm not sure of the date on this one, but it was 1993 or 94.
The train is returning from the SP interchange at Ione with empty cars for the lumber mill at Martell.
At the time, the Amador had 2 Baldwin S-12s.
The railroad is in the Sierra foothills south east of Sacramento. It shut down for freight service when the lumber mills closed several years ago, but most of the track is still in place and used for speeder trips from time to time.

Eastbourne bound train at Polegate, England. The train was part of an hourly service of EMUs from London, Victoria, to Eastbourne on the south coast, a few miles east of Brighton.
We were staying with friends at Hailsham, near Polegate and caught the next train north to London for the day. 18 Sept 1984

Johnston, Sacramento, California, SP 6392, July 1972
It hit me that I've been photographing trains at Johnston for 50 years.. At the time, this was one of 2 or 3 freight service F7s still in operation on SP.
IIRC, I was with some friends on bikes. We rode up, probably intending to see the Zephyr and this freight came by first.

Flanger Set Wednesday, 2022
30 May 2022, Roseville, California. I used the extra wide angle setting on my cell phone to take this photo of a UP flanger set. GP38-2s 569 and 574 with flanger SPMW 324. The snow service Geeps and flangers will spend the summer in Roseville and head up the mountain when the weather turns cold in the fall. The light on Memorial Day afternoon was delicious.

Aspen Branch Tuesday, 1983
GP40-2 DRGW 3090 leads the Aspen Branch train.
When we were in Glenwood Springs in 2019, the Aspen branch had been long abandoned. In 1983, I don't think it went all the way to Aspen. We just happened to see this train when we were in Glenwood Springs in 1983 and took off after it as little was running on the Rio Grande due to the Thistle mudslide. 31 May 1983

Nevada Northern SD7 401 with an excursion that would run to Ely awaits departure, while three SP SD45T-2s head west with the OGPIL, the Ogden-Pittsburgh (California) loaded steel coil train. Cobre was the NN's interchange with the SP.
My dad and I rode the excursion that day from Cobre to East Ely and the next day, we had a ride up to the mines. and to the smelter. It was great. It was put on by Dick Reynolds' Great Western Tours.
This was 29 May 1982 for Cobre-East Ely. On 30 May we rode behind a KCC RS-3 to the mines and the smelter.

Shortly after the westbound cleared Norden an eastbound train blew for the Soda Springs crossing and this eastbound empty grain train appeared.

Basin Bridge Sunday, 1980
Basin Bridge Junction, Madras, India, WP 4-6-2 #7219
The low afternoon light highlights the valve motion of the Pacific. The WP's were India's post independence standard passenger steam engines, with over 700 built.
The engine is starting after a passenger stop and the valve gear is in nearly full forward motion.

Photo of the Day: UP 2767 leads a southbound/westbound manifest train, possibly the Tracy Turn, at Brighton, Sacramento, California. Brighton is on the ex-SP Fresno Sub, where US 50 crosses over the track and is the junction with the Folsom branch.
UP 2767 is a patched ex-SP SD40M-2. The unit was rebuilt from an SD45 by M-K in 1993. Internally, it is an SD40-2.
