Delhi Dienstag
On Republic Day, 26 January 1980, we took the Howrah (Calcutta) Rajdhani Express from Delhi overnight to Howrah. Here are the Rajdhani awaiting departure from Delhi behind one of the few EMDs that we saw in India, WDM4 18001, as well as a Krauss-Maffei diesel-hydraulic class WDS4A shunter moving the consist of another train. CZ at Emigrant Gap for Saturday
The snow is melting at Emigrant Gap, California as the westbound California Zephyr descends Donner Pass at about 5300 feet elevation. F40 395 is leading the way on 27 April 1994, an era when Amtrak was in the head end mail and express business and several MHCs separated the units from the baggage car. The WW2 troop kitchen car was a fixture at Emigrant Gap for several decades, but vanished some years back. |

I got the original DSG around 1970.? Later I got newer versions.? The first one had a supplement in the back with some new models such as the U28CG that were released after the book had been laid out. Mike Tisdale

Re: Stockton Diamonds for Wednesday
I remember Es and Fs in service.? I didn't know locomotive model numbers until I got a copy of the Diesel Spotter's Guide around 1970 or so.? The first new model of engine I was aware of was the SD45T-2 as Trains had articles and photos about the 1972 EMD -2 improvements to their 1966 models and SP got SD45T-2s to help with cooling in the snowsheds and tunnels on Donner and in the Cascades.? As a kid, I would have seen K-Ms and new EMDs on the SP, but I didn't know what they were called. Seeing SD45T-2s and Amtrak F40PHs in museums takes a little getting used to! I did not see North American steam in regular service, but my trip to India in 1980 allows me to say that I did see a lot of steam in regular service. I also saw regular service steam in Sri Lanka and Italy that year and in 1984 0-8-0Ts at the Alsdorf mine and coking works in Germany.? Now what had been that facility in Alsdorf is a large park.? I checked Google Maps and was shocked to see the facility completely gone.?? Mike Tisdale

Ione Branch Sunday
UP is doing trackwork on its branch from Galt to Ione, California.? This is the line that used to connect with the Amador Central.? ?Although the AC shut down some years back and the lumber mill it used to serve is now a shopping mall, there is a gravel quarry at Ione that is expanding and UP is upgrading the line to handle increased business.? SP used to run GP9s on this line and then GP40s when the GP9s were retired, so seeing a couple of UP AC4400s was definitely something different.? I mean, how often do you see modern 6 axle power on a line that has cattle guards on the track?? To make matters more fun on our chase of the 15 MPH train, the weather turned from overcast to brisk rain.? My friend who was driving his Ford Fiesta ST had to be careful of the mud and his lack of ground clearance when he pulled off the road! Mike Tisdale |
