PLEX
5
Has anyone any experience of Plex and what do you use it for ? A bloke talked about it at the last local user group meeting and I couldn't make head nor tail of it apart from the fact he is ripping DVDs and basically got them on a server with access given to his family members. I looked at it some years ago and was none the wiser back then. I thought initially it was meant to be some sort of catalogue happening. I'm wondering if it has any relevance these days with a lot of stuff being on line anyway though his train of thought seemed to be about the avoidance of free to air tv or anything with adverts running.....that used to be when you made a rush to make a pot or visit the bathroom :-) Hello MacCafe IO people. New iMac
7
Just got a new iMac: 21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display 21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display The powerful iMac features an ultra-thin all-in-one design, beautiful widescreen display, the latest processors ... Went for fusion drive. Can't say I noticed much difference in start up time. NB it has no fire wire & no superdrive. You can get an external one. Can't say I particularly like Catalina either John

iPad covers
12
Chap had a aluminium smart case cover on his big iPad at our local Mac group meet yesterday -- it has inbuilt keyboard and apparently some sort of battery in it, I think he said it was the Premium model and the backlight on the keyboard can have different colours. He bought it from a mob called Goldandcherry. This one was for an iPad pro. He'd previously bought the Apple one and didn't like it. So bought this aluminium one instead and was very happy with it Thought I'd mention in case it's of interest. The range covers all sorts of iPad sizes and models. Australia fires
6
Dearest Jude & Peter, Saw on the BBC news about fires in Eastern Australia. Hope you are OK. I've been a bit tied up recently, arranging a move from Pablo Escobar AKA my next door neighbour. The cops may have caught up with him last night. Can you imagine how I feel, having dedicated my life to make new medicines for mankind to have a drug dealer next door? John

WD My Book
8
My 4tb WD My book HD I use for Time Machine has at times been making a noise. Got me a bit concerned. It's only 16 months old. Thankfully husband has found its purchase docket and I inserted SN into WD support site and yes it is under warranty. It passed a check with a WD tool, but I don't know it ... shouldn't be clicking, and I don't feel it's acting like TM of old. I'm thinking of reformatting and setting it up again fresh. One reason being it was the TM for the previous iMac and when I reconnected as it had the same data it asked if I wanted to carry on and I said yes.... but thinking on that now. Jude

WD drive problem -- think I may have found the answer
12
https://community.wd.com/t/wd-drives-no-longer-support-apple-encryption/242071 The drive passes the Apple Disk Utility First aid - says its ok. And I downloaded WD own utilities and it passes that. So as I have repeated messages it can't back up to "Time Machine".....and also the thing has basically gone to sleep when the Mac goes to sleep and hasn't woken up. I truly think the discussion on the link above really is the answer as to why its not been behaving since I put it on the iMac Pro with Mojave. My remedies would seem to be wipe this drive and make it a Carbon Copy Clone.... or (b) buy a different brand drive to set up as a TM - one that is compatible. I am dealing with a WD support person who did answer my support request very quickly but it seemed obvious to me she knew little about Macs and Tm -- but I have sent all the snapshots she has asked for and I await her conclusions. Hi

Dear All, I'm showing definite signs of Osteoporosis now. Several other compression fractures have been diagnosed. I have brittle nails and my mother had hyperkyphosis or Dowager's hump. It seems it has been going on for some time but I've only noticed it recently. I have a limp on the left leg now (Sciatica?). I don't know how this will affect my move in terms of how much weight I can carry but at least I should be somewhere quieter. John

From Camera to Mac
9
I used to have no difficulty transferring my photos to either my MacBook Pro or my iMac; I usually slotted my SD card into them, adding my new pix to their respective Photos installation, and also to our network drive for automatic backup further on. Recently, though (new OS?) I am having to use PictBridge, hooking my camera up via a cable. This is fiddly and slow and I miss the simplicity of the SD card or card reader. My MBPro is on High Sierra, while my iMac is on Mojave. Has anyone else had this happen? Regards Susan P

To Explain:

They allow booking of pc's at notts library generally in hour slots. You can get longer if you make a special request, but I don't think that would be allowed on a regular basis. I've lost my CV. I don't think there's many jobs I could apply to now though. Tried to get work at the tax office. The DWP are not asking me to apply for work. I dare say there will be more work capability assessments. Trying to drink a pint of milk a day + Vitamin D. Had bone densitometry scan on 30th. There's been a lot of rays through me now. Wondering if I'm going to turn green & Hulk up? John

Hi

Dear Jude & Peter, Still thinking of you. The accounts from Mallacoota sounded feirsome: "It sounded like a jet engine, a far-away plane over the hill that we were on," Mr Van Der Merwe told the BBC. Certainly, 10 Km is scarily close. I had no idea until you said that, that it was so close to you. The other factor is the unpredictability. I had heard of firestorms in Dresden and Hiroshima, but obviously these were man-made. I read more about the pyrocumulonimbus events yesterday. I had heard of lightning strikes in the 1980 Mount St Helens eruption, but not from fires before. I feel sorry for the firefighters. Everyone thinks there job is to put out fires, but their first job is to save human life even if it risks their own. This means cutting people out of crashed cars, getting them out of burning buildings, dealing with nuclear, biological and chemical accidents. I'm aware the organisation is different in America & Australia, but often they have to pick up the pieces. Thought about joining the fire service after BSc but was short sighted by then, which rules you out in the UK Sorry, out of time at library. Take care John

where next in computing?
6
Dear All, We are beginning to reach the limits of computing technology. Had a look at the top range MacPro, which has 28 cores, problem is they're only 2.5 GHz each, fine for most things, but some software only works on a single thread, meaning one core only. I thought the Quad core 3.6 GHz iMac would be best for my purposes. Problem is all these components so close together generate a lot of waste heat. Military get round it with Gallium Arsenide, but I'm not sure this will be available to the public without considerable investment: Endangered element: gallium Endangered element: gallium Gallium is a metallic element, well known for its low melting point¡ªat 86 degrees Fahrenheit, it will melt in th... Here's another take: You know all those resources we're about to run out of? No, we aren't You know all those resources we're about to run out of? No, we aren't We seem to have an infinite supply of bullshit, too So it maybe that the Gallium is available, but it will cost. John

Has anyone heard from Jude & Peter
6
Dear All, Has anyone heard from our Australian neighbours? I didn't realise just how close it had got to Brisbane. 10 Km is no joke. I'm sleeping a good deal better having got away from the Escobar's. Don't know if I told you but one morning, about 12.30, 1.00 am his competitors came round & gave him a good beating. Jeesalou, you get involved in that stuff you're going to get trouble. It was like "Lethal Weapon 2" the only difference was the helicopter came down to shine it's light into my neighbours window, rather than coming up. My main trouble now is kids kicking a ball about until 6pm. Hope it stays this way John
