WD drive problem -- think I may have found the answer

The drive passes the Apple Disk Utility First aid - says its ok. And I downloaded WD own utilities and it passes that.
So as I have repeated messages it can't back up to "Time Machine".....and also the thing has basically gone to sleep when the Mac goes to sleep and hasn't woken up. I truly think the discussion on the link above really is the answer as to why its not been behaving since I put it on the iMac Pro with Mojave.

My remedies would seem to be wipe this drive and make it a Carbon Copy Clone.... or (b) buy a different brand drive to set up as a TM - one that is compatible.

I am dealing with a WD support person who did answer my support request very quickly but it seemed obvious to me she knew little about Macs and Tm -- but I have sent all the snapshots she has asked for and I await her conclusions.

Dear Jude,?
Sorry to say this but the apple disk utility is pretty near to useless. Ask other guys here for advice. Maybe drive genius? Harvey & Chris can advise you better here I think

I find Disk Utility to be quite useful, in its limited way, but if the disk misbehaves I think it can send misleading information to the system which can fool Disk Utility.

I use Disk Warrior as my next step in diagnosis and rectification, but if the drive is more than around 3 years old I give up and buy a new one.

I have been out and ?bought a 4tb Seagate drive that the Seagate website says is Mac and Time Machine friendly, and currently it is setting up as a new Time Machine for me.?
I figure this should be an improvement on the WD drive which the WD website info says stopped being supported at Sierra....that was news to me.

However...... reading the small print for the new Seagate thingy it says it needs to be formatted HFS......so how are we going to get on when/if going to Catalina which is a whole new ballgame APFS?

I'm having a further rethink --- should we abandon TM altogether and go for a clone that updates....but for now I am letting the new one do fresh TM and I might then reformat the WD drive and maybe do a clone as well..

The WD drive incidentally was only 13 months old..... and it might be the culprit behind my iMac Pro lagging when it gets to three quarters down the start up bar ?in starting up and lagging in shutting down perhaps.?

Hi

Don’t worry about the format of the drive - the limitation comes from Time Machine rather than ?WD hardware (see this article -?). ?Should Apple update Time Machine to support APFS in future I imagine they’ll provide a migration path.

As for what to do for backup, personally I’d stick with Time Machine - from the “it just works” point of view if no other (though the ability to pull a specific file out of the backup via Finder is also very handy). ?If you have the spare disk capacity making a Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper bootable copy is a nice to have - but if you can only have one I’d stick with time machine.

Regards

The WD HD is only 16 months. WD don’t seem to be responding further. Maybe found the same info I did. ?Found on WD site it is no longer supported after Sierra. Meantime I have made a new TM on a new Seagate drive - iMac Pro is booting faster and shutting down faster. Will see how it goes for a bit. ?I’ll decide in a while whether I might reformat the other and make a clone if it’s going ok.?

The new drive set up just fine….and it opens TM really quick — and the iMac Pro is shutting down faster and booting faster without hesitation….. win win?

I've gone for some Lacie drives which seem to work OK. I'm reluctant to recommend anything-I think it's worth reading round. They say Microfilm is the most resiliant form of storage possible. Not sure how computer friendly that is though.

I have heard from WD today and they have sent instructions willing to replace after receiving snapshots and purchase details. So I am going to wipe it and parcel it up and return.?

New Seagate working well.

I use Time Machine all the time, but I have two more hard drives which take CCC clones once a week each.

Harvey does something similar (he doesn’t seem to have joined the .io group yet) by setting up automatic copying of our “Primary” network drive onto a Secondary and Tertiary disk on a nightly basis.
