Re: In case its of interest --- re Catalina and iPhotos

The thing to do of course is study your Mac HD and discover what apps are 32 bit as against 64bit and whether those 32 bit apps are important to you still. That will make the decision for you as to whether you update now or hold back for a bit.
I am doing a big tidy up of my HD and as I go Updating and replacing apps with 64 bit versions. But there are still apps I use currently that will no longer work if I go forward. So one has to have a coping strategy.

If you go into Apple/about this Mac/ applications , you can discover just how much 32 bit is in there. Helps decision making and replacing.

I’m using App Cleaner - dragging programs on to that to make sure dregs go. It’s a bit tedious but doing a bit each day but might help in eventual Catalina.

I’ve also been tidying documents. Some nested a bit too deep so simplifying as I go. Also sorting photos for duplicates and junking anything not needed. We do tend to snap everything with the iPhone as it’s way too handy.

I had one dammit moment when somehow accidentally selected all applications and Mac froze and made a million aliases on my desktop!!! A what tha! moment. I hope you all covered your ears. ?

Never mind we soldier on.

That happened to me in the West Indies in my drinking days. I was at a party and ended up sleeping in my chair cos of too much booze and the host's wife took advantage of me. The next day I had to meet the new Commander (my boss) and, given we were wearing tropical working rig (shirt shorts and sandals) my red painted toenails were there for every one to see. I certainly got some stick that day - and it two days scrubbing to get rid of it...

Re: In case its of interest --- re Catalina and iPhotos

Hi - thought I would dive in just to add to the virtual machine information.?

I've been running a couple of virtual Mac configurations on a machine set up using Mojave for about six months now: one is running High Sierra the other Snow Leopard.? I'm using Parallels Desktop to support the virtual machines and it works very well: both virtual machines are able to connect to internet (one of them holds up a mail server running in Apple Server 5) and work just fine.?

When I want to work on them I can either open up the virtual machines directly on the host machine, or access them remotely via Remote Desktop app.

The host machine is configured to use APFS (the new Apple file system) and the virtual machine files themselves are stored on APFS drives, but within the virtual machines both are using the older HPFS+ format without probem.? Both are able to open both iPhoto and Aperture.

So the virtual machine option is certainly viable, however to get the best from this route your host machine needs to be reasonably powerful and ideally have quite a lot of RAM (the one I am using is a 2012 Mac Mini with 16GB, and SSD storage).

I am not so familiar with the differences between Virtual Box and Parallels Desktop, but imagine they are small.

Re: In case its of interest --- re Catalina and iPhotos

Catalina is a different drive format (APFS), and when Catalina is installed it makes two partitions.....I only discovered this when I installed it on my husband's PowerBook Pro --- thankfully it all worked ok and we've not had any hitches, but then he's not running a lot of stuff. one is sort of sandboxing the Macs system and the other partition is your own stuff.
It seems like Apple are headed down the path of locking things down more and more though their excuse I read was to make the system even tougher against virus and hackers. Fair enough.
I was about to explore Virtual Box and whether that would be feasible to run another system inside that. Yet to discover that.

One thing I did read is that if you install Catalina and it goes whoopsie then you have the chance to do a restart/command/R and that the Mac makes a "screenshot" recovery before install. ?But not had to test that ?one.

Congratulations, John!

The Fusion Drive’s speed will become evident after a while. ?The solid state part of it will “learn” which files are used most often and store them.

Firewire went out quite a time ago, as did the built-in Superdrive. ?USB3 is probably faster than FW800 and an external DVD/CD writer costs about ?15.

I have the Apple Superdrive (external) and I use it about once every couple of months.

In case you’re wondering, I have my files store in iCloud, making them accessible anywhere on the Internet.

Cheers
