You should be able to boot from an exterior drive ¡ª by holding down the ¡°alt¡± key and it gives you the choice of drives
Have done it myself since I have had this iMac Pro ¡ª I bought a caddy which plugs usb to my iMac Pro and I can slot in any old drive I like to it and see whats on it.
I have a plug in SSD I bought as my new Time Machine¡.and it seems to be doing the job.
To replace a HD in a Mac is not huge money these days John, though if its your old Mac I would replace still with a SATA drive like it was originally provided with. I did that with my old iMac.
My mother used to lock me up in the dark as a very small girl, and once locked me in a dark cellar, and I am slightly claustraphobic as a result so not looking forward to the MRI I have scheduled. Bit I will be brave.
