Re: One more bit of clarification on when the new Copilot M365 Rate will kick in

Thus, to further complicate matters, my 60 credits have been depleted. I was unaware that I even had a limit. This occurred while I was in the middle of drafting. I do not wish to upgrade to the Pro plan for an additional $20. While my 60 credits will reset on February 1, 2025, if I run out, I am unable to purchase additional credits to replenish my balance until the month has ended, nor can I reserve credits for future use. I find some aspects of this system unsatisfactory, as I frequently process brief documents through Copilot to enhance clarity. This practice significantly reduces the time and effort required for editing. These are my thoughts on the matter.

Thanks and happy Thursday.

Interesting.? I would have thought that anyone who's billing date was between 2025-01-01 and 2025-02-20 would have simply been given the whole year as a trial through their 2026 billing date.? Even a bump from January 2025 to February 2025 only gives those so affected a couple of weeks to play with the new Copilot enabled M365.
?
Of course, that presumes that the dates reported to me, and applicable in the USA, will also be applicable elsewhere.
?
The only thing that I consider a huge screw-up about this whole trial is not that it was an automatic upgrade, as you want as many customers as possible playing with new integrated Copilot in hopes they'll "get hooked on it," but that at the end of the trial there would be an automatic downgrade back to Classic or, at the very least, if not automatic you would still have to opt-in to your chosen service level based on a dialog you'd be presented with at end of trial.
?
I know that there are great hopes on Microsoft's part that typical user inertia will hold sway and that many will just allow the upgraded service level to become permanent (or at least require them to switch after the fact) at the next subscription renewal billing.? And I doubt they'll pro-rate for partial year changes even if they allow the actual service itself to downgrade in mid-cycle.
?
We're just all going to have to keep our metaphorical eyes open and ears peeled to the various bits of information that are bound to be fed in dribs and drabs throughout the duration of the trial before one's own next billing date.

Re: One more bit of clarification on when the new Copilot M365 Rate will kick in

I wonder if that is why I got a message out of the blue telling me my billing date was now February 23 2025 (where it should have been January 23 this year)?? Perhaps they realised they fell foul of some rule requiring a certain amount of notice and the easiest workaround was just push the date back, BUT since everyone now knew about it, to simply add on a month in the meantime for those of us due to renew before Feb 20 rather than give us a full extra year at the cheaper rate...

Muhammed,
?
I came very close to quoting the message verbatim, but since you ask: "Starting on your next billing date after February 20, 2025."
?
Above that are an entry for Your Plan, New Price, Current price.? Oddly enough, in the Android app it's quoting monthly rates even though my subscription is on an annual basis.
?
My main point was making people aware that February 20, 2026, is the absolute "drop dead" date for everyone to have made their choices between now and then.? Billing dates are entirely dependent on when you signed up for M365 in the first place.
?
And to all:? I do not read Microsoft's mind.? I will not speak to whether or not there will be differences based upon the market/country you reside in.? It's up to you to keep an eye out for what any notices you might get are telling you.? Each of us only gets notices for our own respective markets.? Some of these may end up being applicable everywhere, others not.

Re: Why do I Want Copilot with my M365?

I'm not sure if it's because I'm old enough to remember Clippy, but like many, my first instinct is also to look for the "No, and never ask me anything ever again" button :)? I too am trying to rethink that and look at where I might get value out of using Copilot (or Chat GPT or deep seek or any of them.? A good friend of mine is quite into AI and has tried to encourage me as well and I still struggle (and Office telling me I can only ask it 60 questions a month really actually only makes my reaction "Oh, well I'll save them in case I need them!" - and yes, I appreciate the absurdity of that on the 29th of the month, when I'm unlikely to run into an "only AI can solve this" PC emergency in the next two days when I don't even know what I might use it?for! *grin*

So, for those hesitating - you're not the only one :)

It seems that a lot of people are discombobulated by the Copilot "prompt to you, the user" letting you know it's available.? When it tells you, "Select the icon or press Alt + I to draft with Copilot," it's simply making you aware of its presence and the option to give it prompts to do what you want it to do.? If you neither select the Copilot icon nor hit Alt + I, and just start typing, not a single thing is different than it ever has been in Word.? It just takes your text, as you are typing it, and placing it in the document at the insertion point.

Yes, I agree. Although I do not use auto-save in Word nor OneDrive for that purpose, I do rely on version history in Google Drive. It saved me when I made an error in a Google Sheet and broke a formula. It took me only about two minutes to revert to the previous version.

Oh, for sure. My office environment, for example, is tightly integrated with OneDrive. On my home laptop though, for my contract work from whom I was given the business M365 license, I’m still on Windows 10 and therefore continue relying on Dropbox. I’ll bet you’re right that more people are likely working off the OneDrive backbone, but when files are shared, more often than not, they’re still mostly coming from Dropbox or Google Drive, not that I believe my experience is a sufficient sample to make broad assumptions. This might change after this October and more machines are nudged toward Windows 11, but I don’t know, when I carry 4 TB on Dropbox and have my life basically established there, it would be a hard sale to switch platforms, hence why I find it interesting that CoPilot insists on leaning on OneDrive when CoPilot Pro works with the Office suite regardless of Windows 10 or 11. The ecosystem point makes total sense though. I can’t blame Microsoft for relying on its own tlatforms to deliver what’s likely the most optimal integration.

Straight out of the box, if you set up Windows 11 with a Microsoft Account, the classic Documents, Pictures, and Music libraries are redirected to OneDrive from the moment you first get to your desktop.? I don't know of many professional offices that do use M365 that don't also use OneDrive where it syncs to the SharePoint storage they get with the business subscriptions to M365 (and which also tends to involve Teams, too).

Hi Brian,

This autosave feature is soooo important when working on large projects.? One of my professors at Cambridge said that somehow a student was basically done with their masters theses, but dropped their laptop into a bathtub, and lost a majority of it, had to go back to an earlier copy and re-write a substantial portion of it.? When I? was ?writing it, I saved in One Drive, but also sent myself chapters and sections to my university e-mail.

Which is why I say, even if it cost $10 per year, and you are not using more than 1 TB storage to begin with and are an M365 user, it makes no sense to purchase additional third party cloud storage.? Since 1 TB comes "with the M365 seat" why not just use it?
?
Current DropBox pricing is available here: ??
The least expensive is the Plus level at $9.99 per month for 2 TB storage, and that's at the annual billing rate, which is less expensive than monthly, and comes out to $119.88/year.? Even if I had to use 2 of the 6 seats available under M365 (and I could with two separate Microsoft Accounts) and at the Copilot enabled Family subscription rate of $129.99 per year, that would still leave 4 shareable seats all of which have 1 TB of their own.? And even though you can't "own" all 6 TB of Family storage under a single Microsoft Account, you can set up sharing folders between accounts, allowing you to easily shuttle things to whichever seat you wish.? Even after decades of collecting stuff and not being nearly as good about cleaning up after myself as I should be, I still have used only a hair over half of that 1 TB I have for my seat.
?
It's interesting how people pick and choose favorites, and no one is right or wrong about any of them, because it comes down to a matter of taste.? But when it comes down to costs, regardless of what your favorite may be, that can't be argued.? I have never been able to stand Dropbox and it's the least preferable file sharing service of "the big ones" for me.? But I never used any file sharing other than Google Drive prior to dumping Office 2016 for M365.? The fact that I can have direct access to the same data store on every PC I have an account on in my household (3) as well as my mobile devices (2) was like nothing short of a miracle.? When you add in that the same is true for my partner and brother-in-law, who are the 2 people with whom M365 seat sharing is active, there is simply nothing out there that beats $99.99 (no Copilot) or $129.99 (Copilot for the primary subscriber) for that kind of cloud storage space coupled with the latest and greatest of the Office suite tools plus a couple more.

For me, the two benefits for using OneDrive are not only the synchronization capabilities, which I know I could also set up with Dropbox or Google Drive, but the storage capacity. I don’t know what Google or Dropbox would charge for a terabyte of storage but since I already get it with my M365 subscription it’s quite a benefit, as far as I’m concerned. I have hours of audio drama, TV shows as well as tons of books and having that terabyte of cloud storage is so helpful for me.

For my part, I have everything stored and shared on Dropbox. In fact, I can’t think of anyone in my personal or professional circle using OneDrive. Those not on Dropbox are using Google Drive, which is its own complication but one I’ve learned to deal.

?

In the end, it sounds as though I will have to use at least some of the 1 TB of available space if I want CoPilot to work with multiple files. I find this slightly irksome, but the point made about everything working within an ecosystem somewhat makes sense. It does put a damper on the sales pitch that CoPilot is somehow ubiquitous, particularly for PCs being touted as CoPilot machines. Based on what I’m now learning, that isn’t exactly true, is it?

I still use Google Drive a lot mostly for things like the tutorials I write because I expect that my Google Accounts will still be around long after I'm dead and gone unless someone who's settling my estate were to delete them (which I won't be directing them to) while my OneDrive data will go with me after my death because I won't be paying for the service to continue.

?

But one thing I love about OneDrive (and it's not really a OneDrive feature, but what third parties have elected to do with OneDrive sharing links) is that sharing links are almost always presented as the file or folder name of the thing being shared when pasted into messages such as this one.? A good example of that being the screenshot I used in the tutorial the other day that shows the bottom of the Subscription Cancellation window for Microsoft Family 365.? I didn't create the hyperlink to the file, , myself.? I just pasted in the OneDrive sharing link and the Groups.io software snagged the actual filename and hyperlinked it automatically.? I'm seeing that happen all over the place when it comes to online venues and OneDrive sharing links.? Why most of them did not and do not do this for other file sharing services including but not limited to Dropbox and Google Drive I do not know.? But when I'm sharing a file from Google Drive I end up manually creating a download link and then using that to manually create the hyperlink with the name/description of the thing being linked to.? It's a far more tedious process (which is why I have an MS-Word file where I keep the hyperlinks I've created, adding new ones over time, so I only have to do this once).

Well, I thought Joe's question was good. In my opinion, Microsoft gets very poor marks for its written communication skills of late whether one is addressing Copilot integration or the mess it made of its various versions of Outlook and which one is used for what. And it will be a cold day in hell before I use One Drive versus Dropbox regardless of the economic benefits of doing so. As we should all know, there are costs other than just money when choosing a software product to use.?

And there's little surprise there simply because of the type of access and transforms going on in the background.? Copilot doesn't get that kind of "access on demand" just anywhere because the hooks to support it are not built in.
?
I've said on multiple occasions that the concept that M365 is, "Just a replacement for Office," needs to be struck down.? M365 is not, and never has been, just an Office suite under another name, but a full blown ecosystem.? The integrated AI capabilities are designed to work within that ecosystem.
?
I also thank you for having made the point in your dedicated post that we need to give details about exactly which M365 ecosystem we're working with, and under what version of Windows, and using what screen reader.? On tech support groups, and this is one that's focused on M365 and Office and accessibility for same, in order to give useful and accurate answers everyone's got to be "on the same page" and having the information you noted and I've repeated is the foundation for that.
?
I will say, though, that on this group my base presumption, in the absence of full information, is that the M365 being asked about is either Personal or Family.? There are very few of our members using other variants, and those who are should always note that.? My answers will always be based on the features in M365 Personal or Family because that's all I have direct access to.??
