Hi, again. Marsha, I'm also wondering if you've tried temporarily
setting JAWS to what is called alternate user directory mode. This
is used for diagnostic purposes and it essentially uses JAWS with
default settings. To toggle in or out of this mode press the
layered keystroke insert-space, followed by the letter Z. You
should hear JAWS verify that you're in this mode using the
Eloquence voice with the default speech settings although
sometimes other voices with unexpected speech settings are used.
If this happens just switch to the voice and speech settings that
are preferable. However, these settings aren't going to be saved
but this mode can be temporarily used to see if JAWS is still
generating that error message when you exit the Find pane. If it
behaves normally then something may have gotten corrupted in your
student's profile and it may then be necessary to remove the
student's Word settings to start over. This, of course, does not
remove the actual settings in the Word application itself.
In addition, if your student likes using the JAWS find command
you can remind the student that pressing insert-f3 finds and moves
to the next occurrence of the word that was being searched for and
shift-insert-f3 moves to the previous instance. Navigation quick
keys needs to be enabled with insert-z in order for these search
capabilities to work. I personally prefer hotkeys which are easier
to press and if this is the case for your student you can use the
JAWS Keyboard Manager to add other keys for these functions.
Personally, I prefer ctrl-F for Find, f3 for Find Next and
shift-f3 for Find Previous but Word does use the function keys for
its own functions so not all users will like my choices. As an
alternative you could use ctrl-F for JAWS Find, shift-ctrl-F for
Find next and alt-shift-f for Find Previous.

David,

Good suggestion. I did have my student
unload JAWS and restart word. Next lesson, we will try the
JAWS find. I thought it might be just in the one document so
had her open a different document, but again happened. The
reason that this is an issue is that this individual uses Word
every day all day long and uses the find command to jump from
different parts of a very long document. So after getting this
message a million times, I am sure it would drive me batty
too. Ha ha

Marsha,
I personally haven't encountered this problem but the message
that your student is hearing is normally what you would hear
if you pressed insert-C for read word in context in situations
where this hotkey doesn't apply or function.
Like you I'm unable to reproduce this problem. Does this happen even if your student closes and restarts JAWS? Does it occur if Word is also closed and restarted?
As a workaround your student could try using the JAWS Find command with quick keys enabled.
1. Press insert-Z to enable quick keys.
2. Press insert-ctrl-F for the JAWS find dialog. Type the text string to find and press enter.
?
One advantage of this method is that the cursor should land right on the text and your student won't need to press the escape key to close the find dialog.

Any ideas?
