Re: Need 2 Tube Shields for SX-17
开云体育Hi Richard, ? The metal envelope tubes in 1935, (by RCA) right. The “G” (glass) variants came during WWII because they were less expensive to produce than the full metal shell ones. The GT variants came at the end of the war and in the following ‘50s. ? 73, Jacques, VE2JFE in Montreal |
Re: Need 2 Tube Shields for SX-17
开云体育Hi Bill, ? I believe that the situation is simple… Most probably you replaced, a while ago, the original 6J7G and 6R7G with their “metal envelope” counterparts, and the grid caps cannot be connected to the metal tubes with the external shield in place because the wire is too short for this… In all the metal envelope tubes, the envelope itself is the shield and is connected to pin 1. With the “G” or “GT” variants, nothing is connected to pin 1 and they require an external shield, like the one in the pictures you sent. So if the tube sockets pin 1 goes to GND inside the chassis, you do not need the external shields anymore (other than for cosmetic purposes). ? A WARNING however ! Some radios using the “G” tube variants (like the WS #19 from WWII) needed the external shields to work properly and the pin 1 of their sockets was connected to the + 270V, being used as +B distribution tie points. Some people plugged in the metal variants instead (6K7, 6K8, 6B8) because they were more “available”, thereby connecting the +B to the metal tubes envelope. I let you figure what happened when they were touched with the power applied… ? BTW, 6J7G and 6R7G tubes are available here: ? ? 73, Jacques, VE2JFE in Montreal ? De?: [email protected] <[email protected]> De la part de Bill (Group Owner) ? Was looking inside my SX-17 and I noticed 2 of the tubes, were lacking their tube shields.? I could have sworn they were there years ago so where are they ? K2WH |
Re: Need 2 Tube Shields for SX-17
开云体育Photo shows metal tubes.? They don't need shields.? Perhaps the original tubes were the larger glass (G) type,? enough taller for the caps to extend over the shields. Outlines in an older RCA tube handbook would tell you. I don't know the relative dates of the tubes but it seems to me metal tubes first appeared about 1935.? Don't know about G and GT tubes. -------- Original message -------- From: "Bill (Group Owner)" <k2wh@...> Date: 11/14/22 1:00 PM (GMT-08:00) Subject: [HallicraftersRadios] Need 2 Tube Shields for SX-17 Looked into my box of tubes and sure enough, there are the 2 tubes shields.? Brought them over to the rig to put them in but they are too tall for me to connect the grid cap, wires are too short. Really ?? I went back into my photos archives and found a picture I took of the inside chassis years ago, and sure enough, there? are the 2 tubes with their shields. So upon putting the shields in, I found the grid cap wires are too short ????? I'm wondering how this is possible when my old images show them on the tubes with the wires connected. So, I am thinking there were 2 different size tube shields, basically shorter ones and the two I have are not from the SX-17 I have. I have attached 2 images.? One taken with the tube shield on (far corner ) and the other without.? I'm starting to think it might be easier to just extend the wires from under the chassis or there actually were shorter tube shields.? The tube id's 6J7 & 6R7. K2WH

Re: WTB HA-16

The HA-16 is the VOX adaptor for the SR-160 and SR-500. It mounts on the rear of the unit. That is what those funny little holes in the top left side of the back of the case are there for.

Had to look that one up in Dachis's book.? Good luck. K2WH

I am looking for an HA-16 to complete a SR-500 system.
It does not need?to be functional, as long?as it is not chopped up.

Re: Hallicrafters on TV
I looked closer now at the SX-42 PANEL: the front panels on others have 4 screw holes on each side for the fastening to the cabinet and? there is about 3/4 inch from the knob edge to the front panel edge, but in this one somebody has butchered the front panel [must have cut the edges with screw holes off] to "fit" that HP? cabinet...? that hurts.

Re: Hallicrafters on TV
开云体育That screw on the right panel edge looks half way into the cabinet too … strange ..POOR OLD HALLI Don VA3DRL ?

Re: Hallicrafters on TV
开云体育Agree the cabinet looks HP-like, and especially with that defining trim ring. So similar in appearance to my old HP-606A - a great shop heater in the winter.Dan WB4GRA On Nov 11, 2022, at 8:17 PM, Richard Knoppow <1oldlens1@...> wrote:

开云体育The knobs don't look right either.? The cabinet looks almost like a Hewlett packard case. Maybe something cobbled together by the prop department. -------- Original message -------- From: n7qmm25 <n7qmm25@...> Date: 11/11/22 4:25 PM (GMT-08:00) Subject: Re: [HallicraftersRadios] Hallicrafters on TV The face is similar but the cabinet is wrong. Re: Hallicrafters on TV
开云体育Interesting!? It looks like a hybrid TV studio prop – bits and pieces of Hallicrafters, combined with something else.? If I recall correctly, this was done deliberately in TV shows and movies so that the studios couldn’t be accused of being a marketing arm of one company or another.?
