Something odd happed this evvening 2
Hi Group, I move my group over the weekend with IO moving the members, email settings, and messages yesterday Mon!? IO had everything done around Noon EST.? However in my group are a lot of older computer challenged people.? Some have had issues getting into the new site that were moved by IO.? Now twice tonight I tired to post a Special Notice where I tired to cut and past a step by step way to get them I hoped into the group.? Now doing the copy and paste while not hard was time consuming as I had to? go to each page and some parts would not copy so i have manually make and insert insert those.? Once all done I have hit Send at the bottom of the posting box.? Sadly and I waited a couple hours in between in case there a slight delay from IO to redo the it a second time.? However neither post showed up in the group or my mail box where I used another email addy to see what members would see. ? So any idea where my Special Notices would have vanished to?? I really hate to do this all again only to have it vanish, and not help my members!? Thanks, Dean

Member having trouble accessing PDF file 4
A member of my group experienced problems right out of the chute. I posted some PDF files in our files area. then sent the direct link to the group. This user has a Mac computer, if that makes any difference. I figured his problem might have something to do with security settings, but I'm a Windows person, not a Mac, so I can't even tell him where to look. Anyone know the answer? Hi Anita, when I try to download the applications i?get this. ?(Adobe Reader blocked this site.) Thank you for any help with this. Anita C.

If you did not ask for a login link to be sent to you, please ignore this email. Cheers, The Groups.io Team I clicked the linkwhich is good until 10:50 and I got this ?Find or Create a Group?Log In?Sign Up ¡ÁThat link has expired. Send Link To Login It is not 10:50 so I did it again and I am in an endless loop of IO sending me links, I click to log on and getting it had expired. Dean

Can a Yahoo Group be transferred without the member list? 9
I know it seems strange to ask but I wondered if it was possible to have the messages and files (and links if there is that feature - can't see it) and not the member list, at least not initially. Robert

full vs HTML digest - should I reset member subscriptions? 2
J, I moved this to GMF to give Mark a break.[1] In @beta J_catlady wrote: /g/beta/message/5755 Features: o Each item in the Topics list is a link to the start of that topic in the body. o Each message has a link back to the Topics list. o The links at the bottom of each message are compact and easy to read. In the plain text digest those links take more space and look cluttered because the URLs are shown. o All links are "live". With the plain text digest if your email service or software doesn't "linkify" plain text URLs then you will need to copy/paste them to your browser. o Some users prefer the formatted appearance of the HTML digest. o Emoticons in the message bodies are shown as graphics. Cons: o The message is encoded in HTML. Some email clients don't handle HTML well, or at all. Some users prefer plain text. o Each digest takes more bytes to transmit. Costs more if using metered or otherwise limited internet service. Requires more storage if you archive the messages for future reference. o Font size and color choices in the individual messages are shown. This can disrupt the appearance and/or readability of the digest. o Emoticons in the message bodies are shown as graphics. Some people despise this. Anything I missed, folks? -- Shal 1: /g/beta/message/4759 (last bullet item)

Import database tables from Y!Groups 3
In beta@ Jim Poston wrote: /g/beta/message/5784 I've decided to expand upon this topic here, as it is more of a "how to". If we come up with bug reports or feature requests those should be posted back in the thread at beta@ so Mark will see them. One thing I noticed when moving some databases from a Y!group to its reincarnation as group@ is that the Exported CSV (probably TSV too) from the Y!Group includes a header row containing the column names. Here I'm using the trailing @ to signify a group on Groups.io, my apologies in advance to anyone who had the temerity to name their group "group". When importing to the group@ that column heading row is matched up to the column names in the group@ table - so you need to have columns that match the names of those in the Y!group. Columns in the CSV that don't match any columns in the group@ table are discarded during import. I found it useful to open the CSV in a text editor to copy/paste the column names into the Edit Table form at group@ so that I'd get them to match exactly. The column type in a group@ table seems to control how both the add row and the import functions treat the content for that column. But my only test so far was a column of type "Date" - which imported as gibberish when fed a CSV containing dates in the YYYY-MM-DD format. On the other hand, importing that column as "Single Line Text", and then changing the type to "Date" after completing the import did not turn them to gibberish. But I don't think it turned them to an internal Date representation either: I think the table just shows the text that it imported despite the subsequent change of field type. -- Shal

From: Ro People are not resisting the idea of an OPTION -- people are ensuring that the folks who make decisions realize that it (whatever IT is) needs to BE an option - not merely a change - and (especially in the case of your earlier suggestion) that it needs to be a stand-alone option, not tied to some 'similar' setting. Many of us have learned the simple truth that software designers look for the easiest way to implement ANYTHING - which generally means changing existing functions rather than adding more options. And that when faced with a small minority clamoring for some specific change, those same software designers will often implement the change with zero regard for the SILENT majority who were perfectly happy the way things were. Unfortunately it is almost always impossible to roll back a bad change, because the decision to roll back a bad change requires management to admit that they made a bad decision. Many of us are here because of the repetitive cycle of BAD CHANGES at Yahoo.

Wiki Database page 3 #howtoguide
I just added a page to the Wiki for "Setting up a Database". I think I covered most of it, but please make changes if appropriate. I'm thinking that we could do a lot of the documentation for Mark on how things work. I know that things are changing, some quite often, and that can make it difficult for less computer comfortable folks to keep up. As far as I'm concerned, Mark is more than welcome to use any of the information that I post if it will help others. If/when Shal feels that a page is pretty much set, he can lock it so that "Only moderators can edit this page" if he chooses so that there's less chance of it being messed up. Duane

Posting not returning to message list? #bug? 2
Shal, When I posted in here, both times it took me to the page that said Thank you, your post will be available when approved by the moderators, (or similar wording,), but then instead of taking me back to the message list (last message), it left me with another blank posting box. I thought Mark fixed this? Brenda

Creating a How-To Guide for groups.io 21 #howtoguide
Per Duane's & Vickie's posts in Beta: For info on this topic, see post #s #5878 (near the bottom), #5886, #5890, and #5891 &#5892 which is bringing the topic to over here in GMFio. In here, the topic was discussed in post #'s #209, #254 (I found my missing post) & #255. Maybe those could be merged into this thread, or if not, maybe the thread could be hashtagged to match the one I made here. Anyway, let's use this thread for discussing creating the #HowToGuide, if everyone's okay with that. :) Brenda

Hello I am new here..... 2
...... and not very IT savvy, I need some help please I run a group for my rural village, we have been using yahoo groups but it has limitations; furthermore, a lot of members are not sophisticated IT users, they will read an emailed daily digest but may not want to navigate the groups home page We use the group more for "announcements" than for "conversations" so a daily digest works for most members. However it is unlikely that they will make much use of the home page, I would like them to see the following in the daily digest and wonder if it can be done? Yahoo allows me to put a footer on the daily digest, I use it for forthcoming events and edit it from time to time. I can see a calendar function here but no "footer". Is there a way of putting a footer into the daily digest? Similarly, I would like to add a village business directory in the daily digest, or at the very least a one click link to the database Similarly I would like photos and other file attachments to be visible in the daily digest, or a one click link Is any of this possible? Thank you Jeremy Freedman

Using IP addresses to identify malcontent members 4
In beta@ message 6229: Brenda wrote: /g/beta/message/6229 IP addresses have two shortcomings: the same person may use multiple IP addresses, and multiple people may use the same IP address.[1] The first can come about from the person connecting using different computers (home, work, library), or with a mobile device using different WiFi locations (Starbucks, grocery store, library, home, work). It is also possible, in most cases, for a person with a home internet connection to break that connection and be assigned a different IP address. That used to be very common with dial-up connections, but now connections (and their IP address) tend to last longer (weeks, months) and ISPs often try to give you the same one back after a disconnection, rather than drawing a fresh number from the pool. The second can come about when multiple users are behind the same router/NAT. This can be as small as a home network, or larger such a dormitory, an office, a campus, or in some parts of the world even a whole city. So using an IP address for identification isn't foolproof. But, as long as you're aware of the limitations, it isn't necessarily worthless either if you can combine it with other forms of evidence. Shal 1: At least, for the IPv4 addresses that have been most used to date (usually written as a string of four small numbers combined with decimal points). In the future, as IPv6 gains usage it isn't clear to me what will happen. Instead of somewhat less than 4 billion unique addresses, the new system has something on the order of 16 quintillion (billion billion) unique addresses (speaking in U.S. terminology, where billion = 1,000,000,000). In IPv6 every computing device could be given a permanent unique address and we wouldn't even come close to running out.

Help with Easy Group Transfer
In Y!GMF message 58371 Dean wrote: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/GroupManagersForum/conversations/messages/58371 (public archive, no membership needed) Do you happen to know if they're asking because they were too timid to just try it? Or did they run into some kind of snag? I made a Wiki page on the subject, but I haven't actually transferred a group myself. So the advice there is gleaned from what I've read. If you have more advice, or detailed descriptions, or screen shots along the way, perhaps we can collaborate on improving the page. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups Shal

case sensitivity of Group+SubGroup names on digest subject line
RichardTE wrote (6525 in beta@): /g/beta/message/6525 Interesting observation. And I think that provides the answer. I created a subgroup, /g/shalstest+camelCaseSubGroup and put you in it to receive the digest. Then posted a messsage. I'm predicting that the intercapitals will be preserved, but initial caps will be imposed in the digest Subject, as in: Shalstest+CamelCaseSubGroup Digest #1 That's based on the appearance of the breadcrumb line in the subgroup (viewing the Messages Thread View): Shalstest+CamelCaseSubGroup > Threads Shal /g/GroupManagersForum

Closing threads 4
Just looking through old posts and I had a question or two about threads ? It looks like threads don't automatically close. ?This must mean someone can add to an old thread a year or two later. ?Correct? If I don't want that, I must manually close them. ?Right? Perhaps a dumb question but I assume that subject lines from closed threads can be reused later. For example, if the subject is Malta, can someone else later start a new thread with the subject Malta?? Frances

group title vs. group email address, effects of changing both? 4
Hi all, I would like to get rid of the underscores in the title and email address of my main group (the title and email address are currently the same, and I'd like to keep it that way). I remember that in Y!G, even changing a couple of letters from lower to uppercase caused some upheaval in members' abilities to receive and send emails. What are the ramifications of changing a group title and/or email address here? Removing the underscores is not a huge deal, but I'd prefer to get rid of them. Thanks. J
