Welcome Message Not Sent After Transition

Jesse Nahan

I?set up and set as active a welcome message about a week ago for our group (cpsparents).
?
Our transition from Yahoo happened about an hour ago. A "you've been added" notice was sent out, but my active welcome message was not.
?
Any solution or reason for this?
?
Thanks,
?
Jesse

I haven't heard anyone report this before.

Have you confirmed this with other group members, or just yourself? Have you looked for it in your spam/junk email folder? Have you checked your own Email Delivery History?

Any solution or reason for this?
If it really didn't go out, you can always send it manually. The easiest way is to just paste it into a group message and post it as a Special Notice.

If you want it to go out to the people on "No Email" too..

  1. Go to Admin>Members and click the checkbox to the left of the "Display Name" column header. This will select everyone on the page.?
  2. Pull down the Actions menu at the bottom of the page and select "Send Message."
  3. On the resulting page, pull down the Notices menu and select your Welcome message.?
  4. Click "Send to Members"
  5. Repeat for every pageful of members in your Member List

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Thank you, Bruce, for your quick reply.
?
I've checked about a half dozen accounts and none have received the welcome message. I made it active a week ago in preparation for the big transition.?
?
I will send it out manually. That isn't a big deal. The automated migration has been smooth and my members are already happily posting away on?.

The Welcome message being sent isn't logged on the group.? You need to check with some members to see if any of them got it.? I suspect they did.

Over the past couple of days, several of my groups have been transferred from Yahoo! Groups. I had active Welcome notices set for all of them. My experience is the same as Jesse's: the "You have been added" message from The Groups.io Team is sent, but the Welcome notice from the Moderators is not. I have a couple of Member (non-Owner/Moderator) accounts of my own that were added to each of these groups as a result of the transfer, and neither of them received the Welcome notice. I've checked the spam folders for both of them, and the Email Delivery History shows no activity. I'm already in the process of copying-and-pasting the customized Welcome notices into messages for each group.

Robert -- I find this really surprising.?

Please double-check the entry you have in the "Notice Type" box. Simply naming it "Welcome" does not make it a Welcome Notice.

Also, you have to click in the provided checkbox to make it Active. I'm attaching a screenshot to show you what I mean.

Robert,

I sent out my Welcome Notice as a special notice because none of my test accounts nor any member I spoke to received it automatically. Spam folders were indeed checked and I was thorough in checking

New members that have joined after our transition have been receiving the automatic Welcome Notice.

This was a very minor blip in our otherwise super smooth Easy Transfer process. I'm grateful to all the support here at Groups.io and delighted to be here.?

The Welcome Notice is checked as Active in each of the groups. As you can see, the settings are as expected for a notice of the type Welcome. (I've masked the real name of my group and "de-linkified" the links.)

Name Type Date
Welcome Message active Welcome 5:32am
Notice Type

Message sent when someone joins your group

Name
Subject
Active Message

Use this message.

As with Jesse, Groups.io did send a Welcome Notice to users (including my Non-Owner/Moderator accounts) when I Direct Added them both before and after the transfer took place. The notices came from the group owner's address. If it is at all relevant, this is a main group with 10 subgroups, 7 of which have now been transferred.

Robert -- Is it possible that the people you're conferring with were already members of the destination group? If so, it stands to reason those people would not have received a Welcome notice.

Otherwise, what you're telling me is in direct contradiction to the Notes section of?/yahootransfer, and I'm inclined to report it to support as a bug.

The only Member (prior to the transfer) for most of the groups was my staff Gmail account (Owner). In a couple of groups I did Direct Add three accounts for our Moderators, including a different address that comes to me. That's how I know that the Welcome Notice is working properly for members subscribed by the Owner/Moderator, just not the ones added by [email protected] in the course of a group transfer.

I have checked with several people whose addresses were added as the group was transferred, and all of them report that they received the Groups.io "You have been added" message, but not the customized Welcome Notice. I've checked the settings pretty thoroughly, so this does seem to be a bug. It would help to confirm it if even a few more members of this group report the same problem. It seems unlikely that Jesse and I are the only ones affected. if the problem is widespread, it seems to impact some very basic functionality.

Thanks for your interest in this, Bruce.

Robert,

... but not the customized Welcome Notice.

Did you actually customize (edit) the Welcome Notice text?

The Note says:
  • If you have created a customized welcome message for your group, we will also send that...
(Yellow highlighter mine)

The way I read it is that if you simply left the boilerplate Welcome notice in place and active, that would not be sent. I think mostly because the boilerplate content is largely redundant with the You've been added... notice.

You may be on to something. I extensively customized each of the default boilerplate Welcome Notices. I did not create brand new notices of the type Welcome and make them active. Since I have a few groups in the queue waiting to be transferred, I have created a new notice of the type Welcome, copied my customized text into it, and made it active. I have deactivated the default message, the one that I customized. I will report what happens. At a more leisurely moment I may quibble about the possible interpretations of "created a customized welcome message for your group." Thanks for bringing this up.

Shal,

No joy on making active a newly created notice of the type Welcome and having the notice actually get delivered at the end of a transfer. I tried that in a group that was in Stage 3 of 4 at the time that I activated the newly created notice. The transfer completed a few hours later and my non-Owner account that was added by support received the "You have been added" message from the Groups.io Team but no customized Welcome message. It was too late to check with the other members who were added in the transfer, but I'll do that in the morning.

The only difference between the original boilerplate (customized by me) and the new one I created is that the name of the original was Welcome Message and the name of the newly created notice is simply Welcome. I do have another group that should go to Stage 4 in a day or so. I can experiment with that one, but I'm out of ideas on what other settings I could change to get the notice to be delivered at the end of the transfer process.

I have already "manually" sent the text of the various Welcome messages to each of the groups that were transferred, so fixing the bug (if it is a bug) won't really be of much benefit to me. The horses are already out of the barn. Still, it's worth my time to experiment with the remaining two groups in the transfer queue if it can help others in the same situation. I'm open to further suggestions on things to try.

Robert R.

Robert,

I'm out of ideas.

My most recent group transfer was a couple years ago, but my test email address received both the "You have been added to ..." and the "Welcome to ..." messages. I don't recall having to do anything special to get that to happen, beyond creating a Welcome notice in keeping with the group's style.

I did make two notices of type Welcome in that group. One, I named "Normal Welcome Message" which was not active then but is now, and the other named "Transfer Welcome Notice" that was only Active from just before saying "go" to the transfer until just after completion.

The Transfer Welcome Notice starts with a jovial "You made it!", following up from the last Special notice sent in Yahoo Group, which ended with something like "Here we go...".

Relatively recent messages (and an old one) from Mark in beta indicate that this ought to be working:
(last sentence)
(last paragraph)
(only paragraph)

You do have a separate Welcome message set up and activated for this destination subgroup, right?

Bruce,

Right. Each of the Welcome notices is "personalized" for the particular group or subgroup, including the subject line and various points in the body of the message, e.g., the group's email address, description of purpose, and the links to? the group's Home page and to "set your subscription settings." So, eleven different Welcome notices.

Robert R.

Here are two screen shots for the Member Notices settings for the last subgroup I have waiting in the transfer queue. (I've masked the real name of my group.) Please let me know if anyone can spot something wrong with this setup.

The transfer for this group will take a few days more to complete. I'll let you know the results.

I too am having problems with the Welcome message NOT being sent to new members.
I have the "Type" set as "Welcome" and I edited the original message to include additional
information then set the message as "Active". I saved the settings then asked numerous NEW
members if they received the Welcome message, None of them have received the message
indicating it is NOT being sent.

Any ideas what is causing this and what steps I can take to make the Welcome message be
sent to new members? I've sent the Welcome message "Manually" as a separate message
to the group email address.

Mike -- For what it's worth, I have reported this as a bug to support, at least in the context of Yahoo group transfers. I haven't yet received a response. I don't know if anyone will bother to work on this, with the understanding that in about three more weeks there aren't going to be any more Yahoo transfers.

Any ideas what is causing this and what steps I can take to make the Welcome message be

To this point, no one has reported that any new people joining their group after the transfer are failing to receive it, just in the context of a transfer. If you have clear evidence that's happening too, please report back, because that's an entirely different problem.

For what it's worth, I just subscribed to my test group using a different email address from what I usually use. I first got the groups.io generic confirmation email, then the group's Pending Subscription notice...but...I never got the active the Welcome notice, either...

Hmmm...that's very disturbing. I can assure you that it used to work. I'd still appreciate it if others could verify.

I've sent the Welcome message "Manually" as a separate message
to the group email address.
I really think that's your best bet, especially under the circumstances. Be sure to send it as a Special Notice.?

Bruce

In my message #23297 Nov 12, i described the trouble I'm having with the Welcome Message too. All the Member Notices actually. They've disappeared and no amount of "Add" new notice seems to work.
