Some subscribers have issue with certain emails
I have some subscribers to [email protected] that are getting certain emails from the group that are not displaying correctly. Below my signature block is what they are getting and that is how it shows up on their screen.

They all have Optimum.com for an ISP. Optimum was contacted by one of my subscribers and of Optimum and were told "they are stating that the problem is not with Optimum but with the obe.outbound.protection.outlook.com server that is being used to send the emails". The EP-List subscriber also says this " I am at a loss to explain this and have no technological expertise to know whether this is true or not. My inclination is to doubt it because other members of the group are not having this issue, although Optimum claims it depends on the devices of the other members or their ISP providers." To test if it was something on my computers or my system I sent directly to one of these subscribers that same email from each of my two computers. They emailed me back saying both came thru looking correctly on their screen. Can you look into this and see if it is something on your system? Jim Owner of EP-List James C. Counts II, CPA CTFA P.O. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJim,I have some subscribers to [email protected] that are getting certain emails from the group that are not displaying correctly. Below my signature block is what they are getting and that is how it shows up on their screen. They all have Optimum.com for an ISP. My inclination is to doubt it because other members of the group are not having this issue, although Optimum claims it depends on the devices of the other members or their ISP providers." If the common thread between the troubled members is they use Optimum then it has to be that ISP, no matter who the email sending server is, especially since other members who use a different ISP get theirs fine.? Maybe something in the way Optimum reads-in and deciphers those particular messages -which happen to be routed through Outlook.com servers- causes them to not display those properly, that would make sense to me. To test if it was something on my computers or my system I sent directly to one of these subscribers that same email from each of my two computers. They emailed me back saying both came thru looking correctly on their screen. To really test that you should send them the same message you posted to the group, not directly from your computer but online from groups.io, i.e. send them a private message from your group so this way the message will be sent to them through groups.io as if it was a "regular" group message.? After posting a normal message to the group, go to the member list and find one of those problem members and select Send Message, and paste in there the same exact message you just posted to the group.? Theoretically, if they have trouble viewing correctly the group message, they should also have the same problem with the direct group message, so let's see what happens. I have my own domain name (hosted by GoDaddy) and my email is hosted by Outlook.com, so I could temporarily join your group and see if I also get the same problem, if not then it has to be Optimum.? Let me know and I'll send-in a subscribe request, or you can send me an invite or DirectAdd me if your group has that option. Cheers, Christos |
Christos
I just ran the test and the email was like a normal email. Also want to mention it is not every email from the group they have an issue with but a certain type of email I post daily. See below what the email is like. Others get it OK thru Groups.io is OK. Jim 07/25/23 What¡¯s In Today¡¯s Update ? A.?????????? Opening Comments ? ? ? 1.?????????? [My Comment: As a tax professional I would suggest tax professionals to NOT entered in our tax software a client's IP PIN until you are ready to actually efile (not when you print Form 8453 etc so the taxpayer can sign the forms so you may actually efile the return) or paper print the client's return. Then after you have either efiled the return or printed it for paper filing that the IP PIN be REMOVED from your tax software. My reason is what if your computer has been hacked? If you entered the IP PIN when you were working on the return and at some point it was done or you entered it when your printed the forms for the taxpayer to sign and then you sent them to the taxpayer the IP PIN would be in your tax software and your computer was hacked then the cybercriminal could potential file a return with the IP PIN before the true taxpayer's return was filed. To be clear what I mean to do is not enter IP PIN until actually ready to efile the returns is when you have the forms signed by the taxpayer and you can efile the return. Enter the IP PIN and recalculate the return and then submit it. Then delete the IP PIN in your software.] ? In the second installment in a special summer series, the Security Summit partners today reminded tax professionals and taxpayers about the IRS Identity Protection PIN Opt-In Program to help protect people against tax-related identity theft. ? Identity Protection PINs, also referred to as IP PINs, serve as a critical defense against identity thieves. The IRS, state tax agencies and the nation's tax industry ¨C working together as the Security Summit ¨C need assistance from tax professionals to let their clients know that IP PINs are now available to anyone who can verify their identity. ? More than 8 million taxpayers have taken the steps to obtain an IP PIN. To obtain an IP PIN, taxpayers can visit the Get an IP PIN, the IRS online tool. ? The Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee, or ETAAC, last year highlighted the importance of the IP PIN to taxpayers and tax professionals. ? Given the strength of IP PINs, obtaining this number can be a tempting target for identity thieves. Summit partners urged taxpayers and tax professionals to be careful and protect the IP PIN from identity thieves, and noted these key tips: ? ????????????? ???????????? Taxpayers should share their IP PIN only with their trusted tax prep provider. ? ????????????? ???????????? Tax professionals should never store clients' IP PINs on computer systems. This reduces taxpayer risk if a tax pro¡¯s system is compromised by an identity thief or cyberattack. ? ????????????? ???????????? The IRS will never call, email or text either taxpayers or tax professionals to request the IP PIN. This is a sign of a scam. ? Tax professionals who experience a data theft can assist clients by urging them to quickly obtain an IP PIN. Even if a thief already has filed a fraudulent return, an IP PIN would still offer protections for later years and prevent taxpayers from being repeat victims of tax-related identity theft. ? Here are a few other things taxpayers and tax professionals should know about the IP PIN: ? ????????????? ???????????? It's a six-digit number known only to the taxpayer and the IRS. ? ????????????? ???????????? The opt-in program is voluntary. ? ????????????? ???????????? The IP PIN should be entered on the electronic tax return when prompted by the software product or on a paper return next to the signature line. ? ????????????? ???????????? The IP PIN is valid for one calendar year; a new IP PIN is generated each year. ? ????????????? ???????????? Only taxpayers who can verify their identities may obtain an IP PIN. ? ????????????? ???????????? IP PIN users should never share their number with anyone but the IRS and their trusted tax preparation provider. The IRS will never call, email or text a request for the IP PIN. ? ????????????? ???????????? Tax professionals cannot obtain an IP PIN on behalf of clients. Taxpayers must obtain their own IP PIN. ? To obtain an IP PIN, the best option is the Get an IP PIN, the IRS online tool. Taxpayers must validate their identities through ID.me to access the tool and their IP PIN. Before attempting this thorough process, see How to Register for Certain Online Self-Help Tools. ? If taxpayers are unable to validate their identity online and if their income is below $73,000 for individuals or below $146,000 for married couples, they may file Form 15227, Application for an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number. The IRS will call the telephone number provided on Form 15227 to validate their identity. Once verified, the taxpayer will receive an IP PIN via U.S. Postal Service within four to six weeks. ? Taxpayers who cannot validate their identities online or on the phone with an IRS employee after submitting a Form 15227, or who are ineligible to file a Form 15227, may call the IRS to make an appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center. They¡¯ll need to bring one picture identification document and another identification document to prove their identity. Once verified, the taxpayer will receive an IP PIN via U.S. Postal Service within three weeks. ? The IP PIN process for confirmed victims of identity theft remains unchanged. These victims will automatically receive an IP PIN each year. ? Additional resources ? Tax professionals also can get help with security recommendations by reviewing the recently revised IRS Publication 4557, Safeguarding Taxpayer Data, and Small Business Information Security: The Fundamentals, by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. ? The IRS¡¯ Identity Theft Central pages for tax pros, individuals and businesses have important details as well. ? Publication 5293, Data Security Resource Guide for Tax Professionals, provides a compilation of data theft information available on IRS.gov. Also, tax professionals should stay connected to the IRS through subscriptions to e-News for Tax Professionals and its social media sites. But got to thinking about it and given I know almost nothing on most of the credits listed I thought I might be wrong and some readers working with nonprofits could use this information. ? Elective pay allows applicable entities, including tax-exempt and governmental entities that would otherwise be unable to claim certain credits because they do not owe federal income tax, to benefit from some clean energy tax credits. TIGTA Reports on The Customer Callback System Benefits Taxpayers; However, Performance Measures Are Not Comprehensive and More Callers Could Qualify for Callback Offers ? What TIGTA Found ? For Fiscal Year 2022, the IRS reported it offered callbacks to approximately 11 million callers and saved callers 3.6 million hours of hold time. The IRS¡¯s long-term strategy is to continue expanding the callback capability to nearly all of its viable telephone services. In January 2023, the IRS updated the CCB system to include better estimates of wait times. The CCB system was designed to reduce the time callers spent waiting on hold, not to increase the number of calls answered. ? TIGTA identified two ways the IRS could enhance the reporting of CCB system results to improve clarity and transparency. First, revise external performance measures to be more comprehensive. This would reduce inconsistency in the performance measures and allow stakeholders to better understand how many callers were offered a callback. For example, stakeholders may be interested to know that in Fiscal Year 2022, only approximately 11 percent of callers seeking live assistance were offered callbacks. ? Second, establish goals for CCB system performance measures. Goals help measure how organizations perform. Without goals, the performance measures do not provide a full perspective about progress and improvements in the CCB system. ? In addition, callers with estimated wait times longer than 60 minutes are not eligible for callback consideration and must instead continue waiting on hold. Eliminating this restriction would improve service to callers who may have the greatest need for it because their wait time is the longest. IRS management stated that this restriction was established during the pilot program. IRS management is considering removing this ineligibility rule; however, as of May 2023, the restriction still remains. ? What TIGTA Recommended ? TIGTA recommended that the Commissioner, Wage and Investment Division, ? ????????????? 1) revise external performance measures to provide a more meaningful assessment of CCB system performance and its assistance provided to taxpayers; ? ????????????? 2) develop baseline goals for CCB system performance measures and adjust them periodically as needed; and ? ????????????? 3) eliminate the 60-minute estimated wait time threshold when offering callers the option to receive a callback. ? In their response to the report, the IRS agreed with two of the recommendations and plans to take corrective actions. However, the IRS did not agree to establish baseline goals for CCB performance because IRS management believes that it is not viable to establish program goals for a customer experience tool when use of the tool is reduced due to positive business changes. TIGTA believes that services designed to mitigate customer burden are not excepted from establishing goals. ? Yes, it¡¯s time you let out the daredevil within and dedicate the next 24 hours to achieving tasks you were too cautious to even think about doing before. If it¡¯s an investment, you go all in. If it¡¯s a business idea, you drop everything and give your all to that particular business. In the case of a hobby or a talent, many people dedicate every fiber of their being to that particular talent. This is the main essence of the saying ¡°All or Nothing.¡± ? According to the Cambridge dictionary, the term means either doing something completely or not doing it all. While it may seem easy to adapt to such a philosophy, the fact is, it is quite risky to put your all into something. Hence, it requires courage, confidence, and decision-making skills to invest everything into a decision and stick to it. And since this sort of attitude is so hard to achieve, National All or Nothing Day was formed. The purpose? To push people to take risks. ? Being a risk-taker leads to ample new opportunities. Don¡¯t believe us? History is flooded with risk-takers who gave their all to their dreams. This includes Neil Armstrong, the first man to land on the moon. Though he was trained as a pilot in the navy, he decided to embark on a trip to the moon when he joined NASA. Another notable figure is Bill Gates, who dropped out of Harvard because he wanted to concentrate on Microsoft. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI just ran the test and the email was like a normal email. Unless if you're using copy and paste to create that message and some formatting code or something gets inadvertently included and is causing the problem, I don't know.? Plus a PDF would guarantee it looks the same to all recipients. Cheers, Christos |
