Problems with Women Writers through the Ages @ Yahoo

One worrying question. When I move (if I manage this) the yahoo group to io., all the stuff remains at yahoo right? I end up with two groups. An original on Yahoo which is now defunct because Yahoo is not fixing it ,and its continuation on io?

Ellen,

When I move (if I manage this) the yahoo group to io., all the stuff
remains at yahoo right?
Correct. No changes are made to your Yahoo Group.

I end up with two groups. An original on Yahoo which is now defunct
because Yahoo is not fixing it, and its continuation on io?
Correct again.

Though if Yahoo (Verizon/Oath, rather) does fix it you'll have two active groups. So at some point you may want to change some settings in your Yahoo Group to prevent new content postings from members. For mine I set the Yahoo groups on moderation so that I can "Reject with reply" any messages posted there, and remind them about the new group posting address.

Ellen,

There's a lot of stuff on Wwtta so I'm guessing that groups.io is big.
Some pretty large groups have already moved over, so I wouldn't worry about that.

The message storage doesn't actually take much space, by today's storage standards, even for decades of active group participation. The limit you may run into is the 1 GB total storage limit for Files, Photos, and Attachments in a Basic (free) group. It is not that hard to have more than 1 GB of photos if you have a lot of them, or they're high resolution.

That happened with the move of one of my classmate groups - one Album had 400+ photos which were camera original size (10 and 10 megapixel). During the transfer Groups.io support (Mark) informed me of the problem and offered to downscale the photos to fit. At 2k x 2k they fit.

Who is running it? someone has to provide the space - and pay for it.
Or it comes from google?
Groups.io is an independent start-up company. Owned and run by Mark Fletcher. The About link at the bottom of each page contains a link to the history of Groups.io.

Groups.io runs on a "Freemium" business model. Which means that the free groups are being paid for by the Premium and Enterprise customers (I have one Premium group at the moment, so you're welcome). No ads. Mark buys compute and database storage from a web services company (a much bigger company than Groups.io) that specializes in hosting web sites. He also buys storage space for files and photos from Amazon Web Services - yes, that Amazon, and you have some idea how big they are.

So as to the size of Groups.io, it can grow dynamically. His service providers handle all the hard work of keeping the servers running, and they bill him by how much he uses.

I am now taking the first step. Let's see if Wwtta takes the transfer
groups URL.
You mean email address, right? Hopefully Yahoo will send out the invite, otherwise contact [email protected] and see if they can use a -subscribe command or home page join button instead. But if even those aren't being processed there may be a problem.

Simple enough on the old group you can turn off the ability for persons to post messages, and one can change the groups page to inform users that the group has move and the appropriate links.

yes - the yahoogroup remains unchanged

one thing i suggest (after having made the move for several groups) is to set all member on the yahoogroup to moderated after successful transfer and after having them notified them ..

whenever someone posted on yahoo by accident i released the message, after adding a little note "YOU ARE POSTING ON THE WRONG LIST, PLEASE CHANGE YOUR ADDRESSBOOK", and i took longer and longer times to moderate - this stopped the massive majority of mistaken addresses in a week or two ..

You can also have an automatic message sent. It works very well.

The transfer will be seamless. But people do need to know or they will think the list is hijacked.

I announced on one list that I was moving the group and explained why. I had already started the process and all H broke loose. People regarded the list as ¡°theirs¡± and I hadn¡¯t asked for a group decision.

Mark Fletcher, who created Onelist which was sold to Yahoo and became Yahoo Groups, is the sole owner, as far as I know, of Groups.IO and he created this service in September 2014. Google, as far as I know, has nothing to do with Groups.IO. Most owners let their membership know about the change and let them know why. Mark will transfer the content for you from what I have been reading. Since you have much valuable information in your archives, you may want to consider making your list public in Groups.IO. I have had huge problems with Yahoo Groups over the years, but I have had no real problems with Groups.IO since I started my first group in Groups.IO in October 2014 and other groups later. Since you cannot post to Yahoo Groups at this time, it would not hurt to keep an archive there and make Groups.IO your active group. I hope that these ideas help.
Hopefully, you did not delete your posts from your groups in your Gmail account so you have your content archived in your Gmail account sent mail.
I hope that these thoughts help you.

Thank you, David. I believe we know one another: your Yahoo group was
the one where you sent important news stories. I will ask how to make
it public or ask where are the instructions. Is there then an archive
at the public place? I hope instructions will say where and how. I
have saved countless postings by myself and others over the years on
my own computer.

It's good to meet again. This is cheering on what else would be a hard

I've done that and still get people trying to join the old group. Guess they can't read the we've moved message on the Yahoo page.

I just send an invitation from the new group and follow that up with a personal email explaining the move.

Ellen,

For now I want to send this message here, which I also sent to the
Beta address because I'm not sure what to do next.
Beta is the official "suggestion box" for Groups.io. It is the place to suggest changes, new features or enhancements to the Groups.io service. It has nothing to do with transferring your Yahoo Group.

I've just joined the groups.io page set up. I was using the word
"instructions" and now I think the word I need to use is advice.
That's certainly apt here in the GMF group (and for unoffical replies in beta). The "instructions" are on the transfer pages and the help pages.

I looked at everything and am not sure what to do next.
Read the instructions:
/static/yahootransfer

Step 0: create your group.

Before the transfer can begin you need to create a group on Groups.io into which your Yahoo Group members and content will be copied.

This step allows you to choose the name your group will have on Groups.io, which does not have to be the same as the name on Yahoo. It also lets you set up the group's home page, a Welcome message, Guidelines, and any other content in your new group which you may want to have in place before you initiate the transfer.

Step 1: Invite the user [email protected] to join your Yahoo Group.

That email address is how you will communicate with Groups.io during the transfer process.

After it accepts the invitation and is a member of your Yahoo Group you'll need to promote it to moderator - it is through that moderator position that Groups.io gains access to your Yahoo Groups's content. When you promote it to moderator you don't need to give it any privileges as it will take no actions other than copying members and content.

Is my [group] moved over as yet:? If so, where is it?
You'd know if it were, after emails from [email protected].

Dear Shal and all,

The listserv WomenWritersThroughTheAges is now working again and suddenly a flood of messages -- about 20 if you count the "tests."?I am told that other listservs are suddenly working again.

I?received this message:

?

Hello,

By inviting [email protected] to join your group WomenwritersThroughTheAges@..., you have taken the first step towards transfering your group to Groups.io. Here is what you need to do next:

  1. Make [email protected] a moderator of your Yahoo group. Uncheck all moderator privileges.

  2. Send an email to [email protected] saying that you are ready to transfer your group. Make sure you include the names of both your old Yahoo Group and new Groups.io group in your email. The email should be sent from the same address as the owner of your Groups.io group.

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].

    Cheers,
    The Groups.io Team

but it has not appeared o the listserv though the listserv was cc'd.? I've now queried the members and am waiting for replies?-- no one seems eager, no one says they want to move; two people said "a glitch."

Would it be possible for me "told hold a place" at Beta and at the Group Managers Forum until the above?message appears on the list or at?such time as it seems the members will agree.

I dislike Yahoo intensely; I never got an explanation from them but am unwilling to force people and of course nervous about moving to another place I don't know as yet. From the directions I received today it seems that I give up my moderation and hand it over to [email protected]

I'd like to stay here as an individual while I wait to see what happens in the next few days.

There's no time limit on your subscription to either group, nor even a requirement that you be actively operating a Groups.io group. Though the conversation might be a lot less interesting if you are not. You could switch to Summary or Digest or Special or No Email until your interest level picks up again.

No, not at all.

It is true that you must promote transfer to moderator - that's how it gains access to the information in your group - but you don't need to give it any privileges, and it won't make any changes or take any actions. You (and your fellow owners/moderators, if any) retain full control over your Yahoo Group.

I'd like to stay here as an individual while I wait to see what

Thank you, Shal for this explanation. You people are all such good people.? No I won't switch to summary or digest (certainly not special or no email).
