New Member message when joining a group
开云体育One thing I liked about Yahoo groups was that when someone joined, they were asked to type a little message as to why they wanted to join.? Then when you went to approve members, you would see their message and this would give you some reassurance it wasn't a spammer.? This saved me from getting hundreds of spammers joining one of my larger groups. ? I'm not seeing where we can turn on such a feature, unless I am missing something.? Do any of you know if we have such a feature at groups.io ? Scott Myers |
It's not currently available, but is on the TODO list, https://trello.com/c/iSkDckWb/120-request-custom-information-when-joining-track-information-per-subscriber
It was brought up again on beta@ a couple of days ago because of the many questions about it here, so Mark is certainly aware of the importance to some people.? A simplified version may be added, Duane -- Help: /static/help GMF's Wiki: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Search button at the top of Messages list |
Since we are on the subject, in YG's I get a message that pops up that a member wants to join. Then I can approve or disapproving their joining. If I approve, then they go through one or more messages before I take them out of moderation status. If I know who they are, I can take them out of moderation immediately after I approved their joining the group. Does IO work the same way? Specifically:

1. Does a message pop up that someone wants to join or does the owner/moderator have to go to a specific place to find out if anyone wants to join, and 2. Can the owner/moderator see any comments the person may have written in the email message to join? Based on the the comments in the Beta group discussion I would assume the answer to this is no. Hi Stan, Yes to number 1 and there is no little note like on Yahoo Groups. So your assumption on number 2 is correct. Paul, Ohio, USA |
This is something I would like to see as well. I've tried using the?“Pending Subscription” option in “Member Notices” to have a message sent to the person applying to join the group, to ask them to say something before their membership would be approved, but that doesn't seem to work. The message is not being sent to the email addresses of the applicants. All that is being sent is the notification to the moderators telling them that a new member needs to be approved.?
?
Am I misunderstanding how to use the Pending Subscription notice, or does it not work the way I assumed?
UPDATE some hours later. Perhaps there was a problem in my email delivery system (I have a private email server) but in any case I did later receive my test Pending Subscription emails. Still, the box for new members to write a comment to the owner/moderators when applying to the group would be a great feature. |

开云体育This seems to be a mysterious bug that happens to only some groups (including mind). The message goes into s black hole st random times. I would appreciate your emailing Mark at the support address about it, as well as adding your two cents to the thread on beta asking for a text box or other method. Someone can post a link here to the beta thread or I can do it later. On Feb 28, 2018, at 9:15 AM, Daniel Rutschman via Groups.Io <dankaduna@...> wrote:

开云体育What I have discovered is the Pending Subscription in many cases, is going into the person’s Spam folder, but the other emails are going into their Inbox folder. Sometimes I have to send the people an email telling them to look in their Spam folder for the Pending Subscription, and then we can finish up the approval. ? Don ? In my group they are not even in spam. They just get lost somewhere. That said, the first sentence in my group description now implores applicants to the group to check their inbox and spam folders for the questionnaire. And it is in bold. This is not a great situation.

J,
In my group they are not even in spam. They just get lost somewhere. The pending member's Email Delivery History ought to have something to say about the fate of the Pending notification. But I'm not seeing anything shown as "Most Recent Successful Delivery" even though my test address did receive the Pending notice. So that's something maybe Mark could address - having that confirmation of delivery would make me much more confident in telling the would-be member to check their spam folder. Contrariwise, had the Pending Notice been rejected it should show there too. But the Email Delivery History page for my test address in the Pending list has nothing in it. Which leaves one to wonder if anything was sent at all. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

Shal, Mark has checked into all of this multiple times for my group and has said it's a mystery. He even set my group up with a special "resend pending member notice" for current group members. On his end, everything shows up as having been successfully delivered. But as we know, that can sometimes be false and bounces can show up much later. 开云体育To test the Pending Subscription process?
I made and tested a new address; joiner@mydomain. 'walked-in' to my home page and pressed
the Subscribe button. which woke up my emailer, showing a fresh email addressed to (can't
remember now) but Subject and Body blank. Ensured that I was the 'joiner' persona and Sent
the email. Nothing. No email received as owner, no email received as the joiner, nothing found
anywhere logical or intuitive in the Groups? just gone.
Today I went to the home page of my site, no email, but presented with a form? and tried to
subscribe as joiner@mydomain and it said I was already subscribed. Huh? But joiner is not a
member.? So ? Reading cookies or something??? Changed the email address on the form to join
@? and 'it' has accepted that? and sent two emails.
I suspect
there is some sort of problem with the database matching the domain part of of the
newsubscriber email address with existing members email addresses. maybe!
So what happened to poor Joiner?? There is absolutely nothing to show the attempt.??
I'll do this again carefully and take notes soon as I can. There is thunder rumbling and I'm
shutting down .
OK,
Tony

开云体育It doesn’t matter which email you use if you’re logged into because yes, it will read that cookie. You could log out first and try it. I’m not sure I understood your second steps in any case. That said, whatever the general problem consists of, it is not reproducible and happens at seemingly random times. So trying to test the ways you did will generally be useless anyway. Been there, done that. On Mar 1, 2018, at 11:03 AM, Tony Moody <aim@...> wrote:

Actually, It just took a while: I'm not sure how long it took for the Email Delivery History page to be updated to show the message,? but sometime in the last 24-hours. So in this case I know that the Pending Subscription notification was delivered, and so could confidently tell the would-be member to look in their Spam, Trash, or wherever. 开云体育Shal,Not sure why this is addressed to me. In the cases in my group where the notice went into a black hole, the message was not in the members’ spam folders, Mark investigated everything he possibly could and was unable to determine the problem. So I’m not sure what you’re trying to say? On Mar 1, 2018, at 10:51 PM, Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote:

J,
Not sure why this is addressed to me.Fair point. It is really addressed to anyone interested in the topic. Mark investigated everything he possibly could and was unable toI'm saying that if the message appears in the pending member's Email Delivery History one needn't bother Mark - you know what happened to the notice, one way or the other. The only thing you don't know is why the would-be member can't find it. And that is unknowable, even by Mark, without the ability to inspect the server logs of the would-be member's email service (or his/her mind).
