Group features
OK, I am new to the io groups, currently in the process of moving my yahoo groups to io.? I notice some features in io groups that I am not really all that familiar with the use of.? When would one use the hashtag feature?? When do you use the Wiki feature.? Are these limited to the group moderator or available for the group members to use.
Sorry I am such a dummy, but at 73, still need those grandkids to tell us how to work these new fangled contraptions,.? LOL Barbara Jean |
Hi Barbara Jean,
A few brief answers! Hashtags - I like them but some people and groups don't make a lot of use of them. They help organize discussions. You can create some ones you know that would be useful For my family group, I use #travel #Christmas #reunion etc. You can search just for messages with hashtags. And you can add them after the fact if someone hasn't used them. But you can ignore them if you like! The large travel group I belong to doesn't use them. In Settings, Message policies, you can decide who can create hashtags. Wiki - On Group Managers Forum, the wiki is a help page. On the travel forum, it is a collection of useful travel links, organized by topic. On my family group, I used it to create pages on each port of call on our cruise - for planning purposes. Normally it is a group effort. A classic example is Wikipedia. In Settings, Wiki (just scroll down on the settings page), you can decide who can read, edit, etc. The help wiki for this group is readable / usable by anyone, but only group members can write / edit. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home Frances -- /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki /static/help More help: use the search button at the top of the Messages list. |

for instance i run a couple psp groups....in the groups we don't use hastags or the wiki, same for incredimail groups, I wouldn't use those features.? now in another closed group i'm in where we do some collective writing...the wiki is awesome reference tool for us as a whole.....just depends on the kind of group as to whether you will want to use or ignore those features On Mon, Aug 26, 2019 at 4:12 PM Barbara Jean Jasen <barbara.jasen@...> wrote: OK, I am new to the io groups, currently in the process of moving my yahoo groups to io.? Thanks Frances.? Don't know if I or any members will use these features or not. Barbara Jean On Mon, Aug 26, 2019 at 4:39 PM Frances <frances@...> wrote: Hi Barbara Jean, |

messages via email that are marked as Special Notices. We have a couple of hashtags like "#Meeting" that signal they are an announcement about an upcoming event. They are set so that only moderators can use them and so the message they are on will be sent as a special notice. This way our moderators can send announcements without having to log into the web page. This can be useful if you are trying to send one from your phone for example. This way you can just send it as you do any email. Jonathan On 8/26/2019 6:06 PM, Barbara Jean Jasen wrote:

Barbara Jean,

OK, I am new to the io groups, currently in the process of moving my yahoo groups to io.? GMF's wiki has some pages of interest when moving from Yahoo Groups. One is our collection of notes regarding the Easy Group Transfer, another is information about using Direct Add to bring in member email addresses, and a third is about Inviting members.
When would one use the hashtag feature?? One aspect of hashtags, and in particular the Hashtag page in the navigation list (the left-hand column) is that they are a way to make a collection of messages for easy reference. Click on a Hashtag on that page and it brings up a search result with all of the messages that have that hashtag in the Subject line. So that works best when there are some specific recurring topics in the group.
?
Another aspect of hashtags, that goes hand-in-hand with the first, is that members can choose to follow a hashtag, or to mute it, as a way of controlling which email messages they want to receive by email. Being able to mute a hashtag or a topic is an individual member's choice, as is using the Advanced Preferences section of their subscription to follow only certain topics rather than receive all group messages.
?
A third aspect of hashtags is that they offer options to control the behavior of topics. This aspect, defining options for a hashtag is open only to moderators, one of the options is whether members can then use the hashtag, or only moderators.
?
When do you use the Wiki feature.? You've seen GMF's usage as a kind of reference work, containing pages such as those linked above. That's the general idea, but it doesn't have to be technical information - it can be a place to consolidate any kind of information that is of recurring interest to group members. Because the pages are easily edited (same editing tools as Groups.io's New Topic or Reply features) a wiki page is easier to keep up to date than a text file or document stored in the Files section.
?
Are these limited to the group moderator or available for the group members to use. That's up to the group management (owners/moderators). The Settings page sets some overall limits, and the individual features have some control options as well.
