Counting emails was Re: [GMF] In Process? AND vailidty of policy change

Yes there is an easy way to see how many messages are in your current Yahoo group.

Simply go to ther home page, scroll down to see the month by month, year by year total and add them all up.
This is the total number of messages CURRENTLY in your Yahoo group.

The message number is the number of messages that have ever been posted on your group, including all messages that have been removed by yahoo, so is not an accurate figure at all.

At the end of the day, it is the number of messages CURRENTLY in the archives that will be transferred.

one thought on this change of policy.
If we signed up to groups.io and started the migration process BEFORE these new conditions came into effect, surely it is not legal to 'back-date' any policy changes. Meaning. That anyone that signs up to groups.io or perhaps starts the migration process AFTER the policy changes, providing it is made very clear on the migration page of the chages, then of course, the new policies can come into effect.
But not before.

I am by no means against people paying for the hard work of Mark and his colleages, and whilst persoanlly I think the sum asked is a bit on the steep side, it is a one off payment only, so is a 'good' way of doing it. It is just the fact that I have transferred the group, got most of the active memebrs all across and used to the new site, to now only be told that we may have to pay for the transferral of all the data, does seem rather 'over the top' at best and at worst, well I will not use that word, but it is not a legally good word.

It would be curious to know what other people think about this please.

Cheers
Alexis

Does anyone know if there is an easy way to count the number of messages

Look at the last message number on the web UI.

I suggest that everyone read the groups.io Terms of Service found at /static/tos

It's to be expected that any change of policy will meet with some resistance. At the same time, Mark owes no special duty of care to those who are not compensating him for his services. That's the way I see it.

I'm sorry if you took my question as questioning the validity of the change. From the responses to my question, I was able to determine that the group I have in the transfer process is way under 100K and so I stopped worrying about it.

Glenn

That's not so simple for a large, old group. The chunky group which I help run has been going for almost 20 years, so the Y! home page for it has 240 numbers to copy and paste and add together; and the oldest months of the archives have a lot of missing messages, so even that would not give an accurate result.

Transferred that group this month, though, and it would (just) have scraped under Mark's generous limit. For reference, the Y! latest message number was about 113?000, and about 80?000 messages were transferred safely.

Personally we at CostaRicaLiving are more than satisfied that we coughed up the moolah for the annual PREMIUM subscription.

We had well over the 100K messages needing to be transferred –a hair over 176,000, to be more precise– yet the transfer was accomplished 'host paste' if you'll pardon the expresion, and began almost immediately after we made our initial transfer request..

But more than that any of the above, the extra tools & functions available with the Premium upgrade are looking to be going to be huge time-savers for Moderating our group.

So I say, "Hail, Mark & "Thanxaheap!!".

Cheers!

Ilene,

Well my group has just been moved.
It said it moved messages but it did not.
Has this been resolved?
Or can you elaborate on what happened?

Just none of the messages moved and it hasn't been resolved.
I am on vacation until Tuesday. I will look into it more when I get home.
I?am not deleting the Y group just the members so it can be looked at again.

At the completion of the transfer you would have been sent a notice telling you what transferred and what didn't. Have you received that? And if so what did it say about messages?

Hi Ilene,

I've not been following this thread but suggest that instead of deleting the members that you put the group on moderation for posting. That way, the members can go back and look at past posts, photos, files etc. If any try to post, you would have to approve the post and can intervene then direct them to Groups.io.

Thanks...
?
It is a signature tag group so the members are set so they can't post and any past messages that are there except for my notes and tagger's fotki addresses which can be gotten from there will be of no value to them?as all offers on there have expired.
?
The only reason I brought it up was when the transfer was completed it said it moved messages and it didn't. So IO didn't transfer everything it said it did or should have transfered.
?
Also Ygroups don't show pictures with messages and IO groups do which is nice.
?
I am debating whether or not to move my other groups.

Yes, I received the notice and I thought it said that messages had been moved.? But I am not going to dwell on it as messages for this group isn't important as it is a quick siggy tagging group and all are outdated anyway.
?
It was just something I brought up to consider if I decided to move my other groups.

Thanks, Ilene

Ilene --?

I haven't been here all that long compared to some folks, but this is the first time I've ever heard of a group being transferred that had NONE of the messages come over.

I suggest going back to the transfer page and checking:

-- Whether your source and target group names are correct, and
-- Ensuring that you didn't inadvertently make the selection that the message archive should not be transferred.

It's entirely possible that the transfer agent made a mistake, but I don't want to leave this issue hanging while other group owners are expecting better performance for their own transfers.

Bruce

It said in the recap that none were transferred.
So I have no idea why that happened, but it did.

Check that group's In Process page. If the "Transfer Messages" box is unchecked that would explain it.

The only other possibility I can think of is if the Yahoo Group's "Messages-Who can see" setting is "Off" (on the Access Control tab). But if that were the case you'd already know that the group has no messages to copy.

It could be that the messages are off to members but wasn't the transfer email set to moderator
The it should have been able to see the messages.
I am not going to?dwell on it because any messages that were in the?Y group were of no use to anyone because they were signature tag offers which long expired.
?
If I was going to transfer another group of mine it would be the same thing - a tag group.
I will not be transferring any of my sharing groups as the group is an email group and any shares that are made need to be viewed via email and not messages or archives.
