Subgroup members must be members of the main group. However they can set their main group to No-Mail or to Special Notices only so they don't get the email. You can also make subgroups more private -

Do you mean prevent subgroup members from reading the main group messages?? No.? Since everyone must be a member of the main group to join a subgroup, they'll always have access to the main group
