Thank you for your reassuring words, Shal. When it comes to copyright infringement I am always a bit nervous, maybe because copyright is part of my daily work (not as a lawyer, unfortunately).

Re: is there a way to report abuse on the groups.io site

I would email the support address for groups.io then block this person or rather ban them, if you can find the right person who is doing this of corse.

Take care and be blessed, and have a happy Tuesday.

Your friend needs to switch messages to his groups to moderated (Settings - Spam Control - "Moderated All posts require approval before being sent to the group"), and moderate all messages. Delete (not reject) messages from the troll.

The only effective way to deal with the troll is to ignore him. He craves attention.

This just underscores the fact that YG! groups are jumping ship at an
exponentially increasing rate. It will probably get worse.

We did ours when it only took a few days start to finish. Now those who
didn't see YG! in the decline are in a state of panic. But fortunately
there's still time.

There is the possibility, of course, that YG! could reverse its decline if
Verizon decides to fully fund it. But I personally believe that would just
be wishful thinking.

I think the wait is worth it even if it takes two weeks to get the group
transferred.

Re: Question About Migrating from Yahoo Groups to Groups.IO and Setting Up a New Group's Privacy Choices #groupowner

Thanks, Shal, for confirming J's answers.? Lawrence, I wanted to make sure I fully understood the definition of "archives", as making that private choice is a "once and done", so I didn't want to make a mistake and choose that, then not be able to reverse my choice if I didn't understand the meaning of "archive".? So, I'll go back through and make sure all the rest of the sections are also viewable only by list subscribers.? Appreciate all the help.? Big step for us.? And Shal, my list members are not the most savvy computer users, so I've opted to keep my list names the same as I move them over to Groups.IO, for fear my Yahoo Groups list members might get confused.? I have enough issues with changing the Yahoo Group name over the years (what a ridiculous kurfflufle, causing a bunch of unnecessary resubscription requests), so anything to K.I.S.S. for my group members, the better for the list mods and owner!?

If X asks, "Why should I believe that this company will stay in business?" and others answer, "Because in our years-long experience with him, we have found that the owner knows what he's doing and has integrity," I don't know how that could be interpreted as criticism. It is simply an answer to the question.

Re: The Transfer

I see we are talking about two different things. In my original message I said
"I sent a message to 'transfer' that I am ready to have the group transferred. I did this on Feb 15th. I never got a response that my message was received. Can I just assume they got it?"
I was clearly talking about the fact that I have no way of knowing if [email protected] had received my message that I was ready to have the group transferred. How my question got interpreted as something related to invitations I do not know.

That one goes into the queue and will get processed as time permits. The only one that's near instant is the notification that the invitation to your YG was received.

In case anyone else wants to check their spam, I realized a few minutes ago that the vast majority of GMF messages today have gone into my spam file. I've been finding them only hours later when I go to the site. This is happening with none of my other groups.

J,

But actually, all content in a private group remains private for its
lifetime except possibly the wiki, the calendar, and the group
guidelines, any of which can be made public at any time.
That statement is true of groups with public (message) archives as well. Aside from those you named, the other content areas cannot be made public even if the archives are.

Re: Question About Migrating from Yahoo Groups to Groups.IO and Setting Up a New Group's Privacy Choices #groupowner

Patty,

Questions #1: So, in order to move my Yahoo Groups to Groups.IO, I
understand that first, I'm going to need to create a Groups.IO group
to migrate my Yahoo Group over to?
Correct.

There's no requirement that the Groups.io group have the same name as the Yahoo Group. The identity of the Groups.io group is something you tell the transfer agent in Step 2.2.

So, what I want is the group to be visible to folks looking to join,
but I do not want our messages, files, photos, etc. to be visible
publicly. ...
So, I am thinking I would want to select #3.
Correct.

So, just wanting to make sure I'm understanding the definition of
"archives". I am taking that to mean my past messages, files, photos,
databases, etc?
No. In this control "archives" refers only to the messages.

Other content areas have their own access controls, further down the page. None of those are irreversible, and none are affected by the choice you make for the (messages) archive.

As J noted, of the other areas only the Wiki, Calendar, and the Guidelines have the option of being made publicly visible.

True, but Patty's question was what content, exactly, remains private. "Archive" refers specifically to the message list. But actually, all content in a private group remains private for its lifetime except possibly the wiki, the calendar, and the group guidelines, any of which can be made public at any time.?

Amen Donald,

My first transfer took a few days and went well. This one has been about 10 days and from my PG Offline download experience I figure it will take few more and know that some things will not transfer. I'm glad to wait.?

The other option is to invite the new members to your new Groups.io and then freeze the Verizon/Yahoo Group. I've done this when creating a new Verizon/Yahoo group from the ashes of a failed Verizon/Yahoo group. It takes longer, yet works. In either case, I'm glad I've backed up my groups.

And second question I have is, in the creation of my new Groups.IO, how to make the correct Privacy selection, on the "Create Group" screen.? So, not sure I'm actually understanding what the options are telling me, so it's hard to make the correct selection, as certain selections are non-reversible.? The choices are:
  1. Listed in directory, publicly viewable archives
  2. Not listed in directory, publicly viewable archives
  3. Listed in directory, private archives
  4. Not listed in directory, private archives
So, what I want is the group to be visible to folks looking to join, but I do not want our messages, files, photos, etc. to be visible publicly.? Only visible to approved list members.? So, I am thinking I would want to select #3.? My concern is, when I select that option, I get a pop up warning that states once this is selected, you cannot make archives public.? They stay private for the life of the list.? So, just wanting to make sure I'm understanding the definition of "archives".? I am taking that to mean my past messages, files, photos, databases, etc?? Am I correctly understanding this?? Thanks.? Hopefully, this will be a fairly seamless process.?

When creating your group and the options above are displayed you can click on making it private (either of the private options) and it will tell you that if you do that it can never be reversed, i.e. always private.

Ok, I have some clarification: in a group with "private archives," all content is private with the possible exception of the Wiki pages and the calendar, which can be made accessible to the public at any point. The Group Guidelines can also be made public.

Subject: [GMF] After the transfer, some YG subscribers immediately opt out of new list on groups.io

?

Within seconds of getting the rush that your group has finally, successfully transferred, you start getting messages from members of the old YG list who have immediately quit the new list (unsubscribed)

This is disappointing, after the frustration of waiting for the transfer to complete, to have old list members quit without even investigating the new list.? At this point I will change the YG list to not allow new members or new posts.? But there is this impulse to remove these instant unsubscribers from the old YG list as well.? Make it a complete sweep on both lists...
