Re: different mail adresses in different groups

You would need to create a separate account for each email address to fully use them.? If you only want to send from another address, you can set an alias in your Account.

I just answered my own question. All I have to do is hit the carriage return a couple of times to go down a few blank lines and then the image does not interfere with the text.

However, all this testing has resulted in a new question.

I have a test picture that is 2560x1600 pixels in size. I sent three separate test messages to my new group with the max image sizes in the photos and files set to
1024x1024
2048x2049
4096x4096

I added the image in each case with the 'Add Pictures' choice. In all three cases the image in the email was 18.3 mm across. When I set the max size to 488x488, then the image got smaller, 13.9 mm across.

Bases on this, it appears in groups.io there is a maximum size of the image in an email when one adds an image by the 'Add Pictures' choice,

In the discussion group I would like to move to IO, photos are very important. In YG's the image is 35.3 mm across, but this is by adding it as an attachment. So, I then did the same tests as above but this time I sent the picture as an attached file with the 'Add Attachments' choice. Now they come through in the larger size in an email that I would like in my group.

This then raises a question in my mind. According to the documentation of groups.io., an unlimited amount of archival email messages are allowed that do not count towards the allocated space, which is 1G for a free group. Attachments count toward the allocated space. If pictures are sent with the 'Add Pictures' choice and not the 'Add Attachments' choice, does the image size count toward the space used, or is it still considered part of an email message for which an unlimited amount of archival space is allowed? I am sure I know the answer, but since the setting choices allow for removing old 'Attachments' if the allotted space is going to be exceeded, it raises this question in my mind.

wonder?
Probably not. But there's also the "Normalize HTML Emails" checkbox, which will strip out the different colors and fonts, while leaving simple formatting like bold and italic, and image inserts.

Re: Adding hashtags and bouncing out of the queue

Hashtags can be added to any topic (not message). Rachel's complaint seems valid and I would suggest it on beta.

Re: Mods given editing power in member's signatures?

Hi Dano,
I'm not talking about editing messages, but the actual message signature that is set up on the subscription page.? That link would take you to where YOU can set up your signature.? So if you signed say with a bad link and were unable to understand how to fix it, I would like to have the ability to go to your signature editor and fix it for you.? Right now that link only takes me to my signature.? Only you can change your signature.??

Even if there were a way to search the photo section for a single member's name or email addy it would be time far too time consuming editing every message a member posts.?

A good point about the auto delete, which I will look into. Thanks for that.??

Transfer plus integration of existing Groups.io as a sub group #subgroups

Matty Smith

Hi
If a Y! is transferred to Groups.io, is it possible to then move already established Groups.io into that newly created one, as sub groups?
And, if yes, at what point in the process would that be done? And how?
Thank you
Matty

The difference in footers has to do with whether the message was formatted

You can force all messages to have the formatted footer, if you want: check
the *Force HTML Emails* checkbox in the Message Formatting section of your
group's Settings page.
I used to be part of a non-Yahoo group where moderators severely chastised members for writing their posts in HTML. So I've learned to steer clear of HTML and write in plain text, which, I must admit, is less headache provoking without all that flourish of colours and fonts. Yet, the kind of plain text footer mentioned by Janet is really annoying.

The "Force HTML Emails" choice might cause any problems to members, I wonder?

Re: Group storage space?

John,

But I'm curious why subgroups have an Admin/Usage menu item, but the
main group it's instead under Admin/Upgrade.
Because you can't upgrade a subgroup: the primary and all its subgroups share the same plan.

Adding an image

If I add an image to a message, sometimes it comes after the text and other times it interferes with the text. How can one add it so it always comes after the text?

Shal,

"However, what ken said: when the Y!Group's members are copied in, those
email addresses already in the Groups.io group are skipped, so their
subscription preferences (individual, digest, etc.) and posting privileges

Question. If a member in YG had a No Email preference, and the No Email
preference was not allowed in a Groups.io group, what email preferences
would the member have after a transfer?

Re: Has something changed with the message footers?

Janet,

That explains the formatting, but not the missing "Reply to Sender"
option. So is that something not possible with the text versions?
The Reply to Group and Reply to Sender links are "mailto:" links. Those have proven problematic in plain text (not all email interfaces "linkify" them) and they are particularly ugly as URLs. For example:

mailto:desertminis@...?subject=Private:%20Re:%20Re%3A%20%5BGMF%5D%20Has%20something%20changed%20with%20the%20message%20footers%3F

So, while it might be technically possible, Mark felt that on the whole including them would be more trouble than they're worth.

Re: After 6 days, still no transfer from yahoogroups

Dave,

I asked yesterday if there was any particular order in the processing
of transfers. So far no one has answered that.
In addition to what Duane said, Step 3 may take more or less time for a given group depending on how well the copy operation goes.

I changed that to unmoderated. Would that have made a difference?
Should we send a reminder email, letting them know we changed that
status?
I think no and no.

If we do, does it have to come from the person who created the .io
group? Or can it come from another person with owner permissions and
status on the .io group?
I think communication with the transfer agent can be from any owner of the Groups.io group. IIRC Mark has said that about the email in Step 2.2. However, to avoid confusion it would probably be best for all messages to come from the same owner, if there's a need for more than the one "Go" message.

Re: After the transfer, some YG subscribers immediately opt out of new list on groups.io

Stan,

It may be, as J stated, that Yahoo is just behind implementing this,
but then if they are, it seems yahoo would already be black listed by
a lot of ISP's ...
I think Doug and others may have overstated it in calling the result "blacklisted" - though with some of the services out there who knows. My impression was more that it feeds into the list service's reputation, as part of the overall "spam" detection algorithms.

since messages marked as spam surely must have occurred given the huge
group memberships in YG's.
Quite so. A perennial complaint over the years has been that Y!Group messages frequently end up in people's spam folders - even Yahoo Mail users. I think it has long been the case, with most webmail services, that one user marking Groups messages as spam can adversely affect deliveries to other users.

The carrot, as I understand it, for a list operator to sign up with an email service's FBL is improved deliverability (to Inbox, rather than to Spam). But only so long as the list operator follows the rules and stops delivery to reported addresses. For the new kid on the block, this carrot may be much more valuable than to an established service such as Yahoo Groups.

Not with all email services, but yes with some.

Though, at least in the case of messages automatically delivered to the spam folder, it seems to be the act (user or automated) of deleting the message while still in the Spam folder which triggers the notice back to the list provider (Groups.io, in our case). Hence the advice, if you use such an afflicted service, to always check your spam folder and mark as "not spam" any messages from Groups.io groups that may have landed there. Well, all legit messages actually.

Does the same thing happen in YG's?
No.

I don't know the actual timeline, but J is correct that this is something relatively new (in the last several years) that some email services are doing, and something in which Y!Groups never to my knowledge participated.

Re: The Transfer

Donald,

If you started a group on io and later did the transfer from Yahoo
would that work?
Yes. In fact it is required - Step 0. ;-)

However, what ken said: when the Y!Group's members are copied in, those email addresses already in the Groups.io group are skipped, so their subscription preferences (individual, digest, etc.) and posting privileges are not copied.

Also, message numbers are assigned as the Y!Group messages are copied in, so they will get intermingled with messages being posted in the Groups.io group.
